Power to the Children By Remo Williams Kytka Hilmar-Jezek's book struck a chord with me: as someone involved in the American system of education for the past 26 years as a substitute and as an aide, I know first-hand how broken the system is and how children need to be weaned from it to be un-schooled and properly educated. Being shut in a prison-like environment for eight hours a day, five days a week, told what to do, when to do it, and how to do it can break a young person's spirit and initiative. Any talk of "think for yourself" or "walk to the beat of a different drummer" is just hogwash. The children are brainwashed to know only what the establishment wants them to know and have the illusion that they have accessed knowledge. The school system is presently trying to keep the children in school for longer hours and start them younger, under the pretext that they can't compete "out there." The answer is not more, but less. When I went to school in the '50s, I had only four hours of school a day (private French school) and I received the best education imaginable. To echo the late Murray Rothbard, education should be left to the private sector. Free enterprise will make sure things are run efficiently. Free enterprise, what a concept!Children should be encouraged to find out for themselves; they should be encouraged to figure things out for themselves. They are inquisitive enough. Once they are on the true path of knowledge, they will thirst for truth. And then, watch out. The truth will set them free. And dangerous.

All three are talented in many ways, each is able to adapt from the poorest to the most affluent of lifestyles, now own their own businesses along with having a variety of survival and self-sufficiency skills.Does the above sound like the kind of child you would like to raise? You can! Are you wondering if public school is really the best place for your child? Maybe your child is already struggling and you are not sure how to help? As the author says, "To allow the opening for a new reality, you must be willing to question the current reality." This can be devastating for some. As a reader as well as an avid home educator I fully sympathize as I did not always think the way I do now. Just as Kytka admits she has relaxed in her schooling style over the years, I admit to thinking that homeschooling was definitely NOT the way to go way back when but it took desperation and a definite change of heart to show me I was wrong and since our decision to educate our children ourselves we have never looked back. It is our choice as to the kind of parent we want to be! WOW! That sounds like a burden but it does not have to be. How do you see obstacles in life? As a problem or a challenge?Kytka admits that her kids found it hard to converse with school kids their age because they (her kids) were not interested in the latest fashions or the newest video game. I have seen this with our children too. They can however converse with all ages about the "real" things of life.Is traditional school a prison for children? It is important to note that the author does not expect you to just take her word for everything she says. She encourages to read a variety of different books so that you make an educated choice for yourself. The author is not against all schooling, she is FOR LEARNING and there is a difference. "Today's public school system is set up and designed against learning." What are the seven hidden lessons that American public schools teach? When did the family break down? Erin Pizzey wrote "Destroy the family and you destroy the country." Requiring kids to start school earlier and spend a greater length of time there will not solve the problem in today's educational system.SO is unschooling your child all about letting them do exactly what they want whilst you, as the parent, spend your days sat in front of the TV watching soap operas? No! It is your job to provide stimulation - library, museums etc. You are to guide and teach them when required. Encourage your child to talk to people and ask questions. Set the example. Many times that will mean learning right along side them. Encourage that natural love of learning that is already within them. Who do you think needs the most help? It's not the children! Are you doing too much for your child? Do you need to get out of the way and let them learn? (I have heard so many complaints from parents who have children with special needs saying that their teachers in school do not challenge them enough but we need to be careful at home that do not fall into the same trap.) The world is changing. Let your child change and be ready. This is a well-written and hard to dispute book. It is the author's testimony of how she has raised her three children and it has worked. The author also provides a lot of quotes and book suggestions not to mention, that unless you have your head in the sand, you can see many of the problems that she talks about in today's public schools. SO what didn't I like? In one chapter she talks about the "prefect child". I see where the author is coming from in that each of us is created uniquely but the author says that each child is perfect. I have to disagree here. I think "perfect" is a poor choice of word as no matter who we are, none of us is perfect. Yes, we were all created to be as we are but we still have faults and if we bring up our children to think they are perfect and can never do any wrong then we are likely to raise a spoiled brat.I would and do recommend this book to anyone thinking of homsechooling their child. In everything there needs to be balance. Just like me, you may not agree with everything in this book but it will get you thinking. Remember, we are not cookie cutter people i.e all the same. We all live in different environments and have varying talents. The main message of this book is to not dampen that naturally inquisitive spirit in your child. Let them choose what they want to study this week. Run with it! Be encouraged. You'll soon discover that they will learn far more than if you sat them down with a rigid curriculum. LOVE TO LEARN, you'll never regret it!Just so you know, I was given a copy of this book in return for my honest review. The opinion expressed above is totally my own. I have no affiliation with the author at all.

As a homeschooling parent who has raised and homeschooled four children (with amazing results), I applaud Ms. Kytka Hilmar-Jezek's honest approach in educating the masses and exposing the dark reality of schools and the broken educational system. This book will strike chords. However, it will also make parents think twice before choosing career over raising their children and trusting the schools to do a parent's job. If more parents followed the advice of this book and actually parented their children, spent more time with them, became friends, and talked with their children, as opposed to leaving that task for the schools, while pursuing their own careers, we would have a much healthier society today. Bravo to the author for stating the facts so boldly!
