There are so many chapters packed with potentially good information and no way to get to them easily. A table of contents is included but doesn't include any links to jump to the relevant chapters. You just have to guess the location repeatedly to try and get to the point you want. There are no page numbers either which isn't unusual for an ebook but would help since the TOC is not linked. The book has too much potential information in it and it's simply not accessable in an ebook format unless you just love location guessing or endlessly flipping pages forward/backward. I don't know how good the content of the whole book is but the book is impossible to navigate. If the TOC became linked it would probably be great as an ebook but sadly it's not the case. Whoever put this out clearly just dumped a text file into the Amazon system without any thoughts to making it a reader friendly experience. I returned it for a refund.

Interesting look back at early mysteries By Librarian Quite a few mystery novels by Carolyn Wells are currently available in the Kindle Store, and while she is not up there with the greats of that genre, her mysteries are still very entertaining; I have certainly enjoyed all those I have thus far read. This book, however, is nonfiction. It begins with a relatively disjointed discussion of topics related to human curiosity, the history of the mystery story in myth and legend, mystery stories as literature, and elements of mystery in the works of early non-mystery writers. Wells then treats ghost stories and riddle stories at some length. These preliminary chapters are interesting and a foundational necessity, but she doesn't hit her stride until she finally arrives at the true detective story and Edgar Allan Poe. To me, those earlier chapters read as if the author felt obligated to include them, but really just wanted to get past them to get to "the good stuff." (Or maybe, it was just my own impatience to get there.)Nevertheless, Carolyn Wells finally gets to Poe and subsequently to authors of the "modern" era (the early 1900's, when this book was written). She does this in a series of chapters each exploring myriad mystery-related topics (some lightly, others in detail, and many overlaping and repetitive). She cites numerous works by Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jacques Futrelle, Emile Gaboriau, Maurice Leblanc, Gaston Leroux, Arthur B. Reeve, Anna Katharine Green and other noted mystery writers, often discussing plot elements and providing lengthy excerpts from their writing. Since many, if not most, of the works to which she refers are now in the public domain, this becomes a very handy list of titles for lovers of such (now) old-fashioned mysteries to seek to add to their Kindles. (Comprehensive and inexpensive collections can be inexpensively purchased in the Kindle Store for many of these authors, and a great many of their individual novels are available as public domain freebies.) But be aware that she often reveals plot outcomes, culprits, and other such spoilers in her discussions of given topics. You may wish to be on the lookout for such revelations in order to skip them so as not to ruin your future reading pleasure of those works. When Wells shifts from DESCRIBING what has hitherto been done, to PRESCRIBING what a mystery writer should and should not do, the book shows its age and may even tend to provoke some unintended mirth (for instance, some of her comments about women). Indeed, many of the things she strongly says should NOT be done when writing a mystery, have since been done quite successfully. To her credit, however, she recognizes exceptions even in her own day which were deliberately done for dramatic effect by skilled writers, but she still warns against their general use. Ironically, her own faithful adherence to the advice and standards she provides in this book resulted in her works being popularly-received (and still enjoyable) but artistically restrained and less than stellar; the "sameness" one perceives in reading them is largely due to the very "formula" she followed and here recommends to others.Wells presents her views relative to the collective tastes and sensibilities of the reading audience of her day, but obviously much has changed since then. It is for this reason the book, overall, exudes a certain quaintness, not to mention an upperclass, cultural bias. But even though a document strongly reflective of its time, it is not without value to today's budding writers of mysteries so long as Wells' precepts are regarded as suggestions, some better than others, some appropriate and some not, and not a few worthwhile more in the breach than in the observance. In other words, like all advice, it is to be taken cautiously and with a grain of salt.In conclusion, as a practical manual for how to write today's modern mysteries (both novels and short stories), this book is largely outdated (though, as previously noted, not totally without merit to would-be, but critically discerning, mystery-writers). But while no longer of especial value as a "how-to" book, it is definitely worth reading as an introduction to early mystery writers, their techniques and their works. On that basis I can heartily recommend it. Several editions are currently offered in the Kindle Store at prices as low as $1.75, and it also appears in the otherwise less than stellar 2nd Carolyn Wells Megapack from Wildside (for only $.99), but it may also be obtained online at mnybks.net for free. For a fabulous collection of her mysteries consider the FIRST Carolyn Wells Megapack (for $.99).

Want to write mysteries. . .better read this 1913 gem By Charles Bush This was written at a time when writers were thorough, as opposed to many of the current books on writing slammed out to make a buck off the backs of aspiring fictioneers.True you need a bit of a vocabulary to read it, but the research into the mystery makes it worth the read.Among other things, the book discusses three main categories of mystery: 1. Ghost stories; 2. Riddles which must be solved without cheating; and 3. Detective stories, which are solved by a process of inquiry and deduction. The volume offers a great history on the development of the mystery from Edgar Allan Poe and Lecoq, through Conan Doyle and Holmes. This book is definitely worth reading, and, the knowledge offered is not obselete at all. Just make sure you have a note pad handy to record the nitty gritty found in each chapter. I use OneNote. Recommended.Hampton Bush, author of Brothers of the Light, a science-fiction thriller-love story

The first of a two-volume textbook for college General Chemistry students, this book takes a "novel" approach on two fronts. It's written and formatted in a way that encourages it be read just like any other book, while also eschewing many of the traditional tropes of traditional chemistry textbooks. Figures, graphs and tables are embedded within the text itself, usually without labels or captions, in an attempt to keep the "narrative flow" going. Similarly, sample calculations are presented in a step-by-step fashion to mimic how an instructor would guide a student through a problem if he or she were doing it in person.

It's significantly cheaper than any textbook you'll likely ever purchase. The downsides? Expect your professor to provide numerous corrections after the fact, and don't be surprised if you spend 45 minutes trying to re-work an answer only to realize there was an uncorrected error in the book. In class, Matthews is passionate about the topic and is excellent at conveying what nuances there are in Gen Chem. But the idea just isn't well-executed in book form.

This novel-like format is broken into small size sections with review and practice questions after each section to ensure reader has understood concepts. Facts made so much sense and understanding built on learned concepts very naturally, seemingly effortlessly. After failing to understand chemistry through several standard textbooks, I finally know it thanks to Chemistry, A Novel (Textbook).

Also expect to rework an answer 10 times only to realize there is an error in the answer key. I didn't pass because of this book, I passed because of Khan Academy.

A Man Comes from Someplace: Stories, History, Memory from a Lost Time is a cultural study of a multi-generational Jewish family from a shtetl in southwestern Ukraine before World War I to their international lives in the 21st century. The narrative, told from multiple perspectives, becomes a transformative space for re-presenting family stories as cultural performance. The study draws from many sources: ethnographic interviews with an oral storyteller (the author's father), family letters, papers from immigration and relief organizations of the 1920s, eyewitness reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, maps, genealogy, and cultural, historical, and literary research. The book investigates the ways family stories can be collected, interpreted, and re-presented to situate story in history and to re-envision connections between the past, present, and future. Family stories become memory sites for interrogating questions of loss and displacement, exile, immigration, survival, resilience, and identity. Stories function as antidotes to trauma, a means of making sense of the world. Memory is an act of resistance, the refusal to be silenced or erased, the insistence that we know the past and remember those who came before.

We were all immigrants at some time By Dr. Shirley Budhos Judith Pearl Summerfield wrote a lovely, moving tribute to her father and family by using many documents, She presented a man who had overcome much suffering and loss, and yet had the ability to adapt and appreciate what he had accomplished in the U.S. after escaping from Ukraine during pogroms and arriving penniless, with few clothes, and no other possessions. A gifted storyteller, he shared much with his daughter, and then she explored and developed impressive descriptions of historic events, people, and .places, giving he reader a deep understanding of escape,l, migration. arrival. Her book was wonderful to read and to think about.I recommend this book to everyone , especially in these days of mass migrations of refugees fleeing from danger and oppression.

A Marvelous Meditation of an Immigrant's Story By AvLn Judith Pearl Summerfield wrote a magnificent and moving story about her father's life from childhood in a mostly-Jewish, Ukrainian village to his immigration and later years in the United States. Her story captures the tragedy and the beauty about a family divided between three continents, marred by loss, but able to reunite. The book has particular resonance for me (my family came from the same village as the author's father) but the story is so moving and so powerful, I would love this book no matter what my lineage.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read By B. A. Moskowitz This is a great story of a family -- its beginnings, its struggle to survive, its losses and its triumphant gains-- within the context of both history and story. It appeals to the heart and the head, and tells how living out the story of one's life is living. It has many heroes and heroines, but hte main hero is the author's father, Martin (Motye, in the old country), an ordinary, extraordinary man who loves to tell the story of his survival. The main heroine, I think, is the author herself, who tells the story with great delicacy, great language and great love. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in history, narrative, or persistence of family against all odds. You feel you know these people and you care about them. A great read.

But just as he begins to piece together the mystery of how Gary Soneji could have mortally wounded Cross after he was believed to be dead, he is summoned to Paris with a postcard from Mr. Smith inviting him to a very special killing. The body count is high, the tension the highest, and the two killers on the loose are watching every move their pursuers make. Review Ticks like a time bomb - full of threat and terror Los Angeles Times Brilliantly terrifying...so exciting I had to stay up all night to finish it Daily Mail 'If there really were human superheroes, Alex Cross would be at the head of the class...and, with each instalment in the series, Patterson makes sure his superhero gets bigger and better while at the same time becomming more vulnerable.' By Amazon Customer Alex Cross, James Patterson's returning character, is truly one today's greatest, most well developed 'hero' found in print! In Cat and Mouse, Cross's fourth book, the reader is sent on a roller coaster ride of plot twists all written in an almost groundbreaking 'change of perspective' style. Live the unfolding mystery through Alex Cross's eyes and others around him as they interact with one another in an attempt to stop the returning villian from Patterson's previous book Along Came a Spider-Gary Soneji. Or is it someone else? In this book Patterson has topped himself once again concerning the 'fleshing out' of his star Alex Cross. The interaction between the detective and those around him such as his children, mother and love interest creates a spellbinding atmosphere that is rarely achieved in today's 'suspense' books. But therein is only one of the author's strengths, the storyline is presented in a unique and captivating way, with a seemingly unbelievable twist occurring halfway through instead of at the end. Lastly, don't be misled by my harping on the merits of this book's character interaction. Its greatest asset is the mystery villian, and Alex Cross's attempts at identifying him/her. *Previous book alert* I suggest you read the first three Alex Cross books in this order:Along Came a Spider,Kiss the Girls, and Jack and Jill. (at the very least Along..) before reading Cat and Mouse.

Williams Cat & Mouse was the story of Alex Cross, an African-American police officer who was working on a case of two serial killers. One was Gary Soneji--the antagonist from Patterson's previous thriller Along Came a Spider--who was hellbent on taking revenge on Cross, family included. The other was Mr. Smith, a serial killer with split personalities who performed "autopsies" on his victims while they were still alive. This book has a good balance of scenes between Cross' personal life (his loving grandmother, his huge best friend Samson, his two beautiful children, and their teacher whom he is falling in love with) and business life. The book is very easy to follow and goes by at a very quick pace. The characters were realistic along with the plot. The thing that I liked most about the book was the way Patterson told the story. I actually found myself feeling sorry for the bad guys as well as the good, which usually never happens.I would recommend this book to anyone but be sure not to make the same mistake I made. I started the book late at night before I went to bed at about 11 o'clock. It was so good that I continued to read until three in the morning, which left me sleepy and irritable the next day at work. If you are going to read this book, be sure to start it when you have at least two hours of spare time.P.S. Please read my other reviews.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The First BAD Cross Book By Paul M. Gunther I've been a fan of the Alex Cross books since Kiss The Girls. I stayed up all night until five in the morning to finish that one. It is still, to this day, the only book that has kept me up all night because I had to know what was going to happen. Since then, I've devoured each new Cross book like a long lost friend. With the exception of Cat & Mouse. This book is a complete waste of time. I don't even know where to begin in describing what is wrong with this book.Cross fans had been patiently waiting through Kiss The Girls and Jack And Jill for the return of Gary Soneji. His presence (or lack thereof) was always in the back of the reader's mind. He was out there somewhere. Lurking. Waiting. Biding his time. Cross has lived in fear of Soneji, suspecting with every crime that Soneji might somehow be behind it. Finally, Soneji has emerged. And his reappearance is completely anti-climactic. Soneji runs around, killing his own family and innocent civilians, leading Cross on a merry chase, yet never directly challenging Cross himself. When they finally do have their final showdown, it is at the midway point through the book. After two novels of buildup, the payoff is an anti-climactic half of a novel. The second half of the book is spent with Thomas Pierce, another FBI agent, who takes over the telling of the tale while Cross is laid up in the hospital. He's trying to uncover the identity of the person who attacked Cross, while he tracks another killer, Mr. Smith, a killer's whose identity is so painfully obvious that it might as well be printed on the back of the book. It's obvious because Patterson never, for one moment, gives you anyone else you could possibly suspect. It is this second part of the novel that is rife with problems. Though Pierce is telling the story in first person, Patterson occassionally slips into third person. Suddenly "I did" becomes "he did." Not good. It seems indicative of the lazy manner in which the book seems to have been written. The book is very choppy. The two criminals, Soneji and Smith, do not complement each other. They seem to be products of what I call the "Batman Syndrome". After the second Batman film, all of the film were required, as if by government regulations, to have two villains. Of course, the problem with doing this is that you rapidly run out of interesting villains. After Kiss The Girls, in which Cross ran up against two villains, Patterson seemed to decide that this was necessary for all of his books. But while the two villains in Kiss The Girls worked because they were actually working together, the two villains in Cat & Mouse have absolutely nothing to do with each other, and the result seems to be a novel with two subplots and no main plot. After such an intensive buildup for the confrontation between Cross and Soneji, this book is a giant letdown. There is an interesting story somewhere with Thomas Pierce, but it's never fully developed, and ultimately falls flat on its face. I recommend this book only for die hard Alex Cross fans. Otherwise, stay away.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Vey Good By Eric R. I would have given this book four and a half stars if I could, but I could only give it four stars. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is there are some places it could have been a tiny bit more useful.

I thought I was okay being on my own, but then I realized what I was missing. You. Chloe is a tough woman who doesn't believe in relationships. She views them as a prison and enjoys being a free bird in life. It's unfortunate for her that she's secretly in love with her hot roommate, Grant. One drunk night, the two best friends hook up and she thinks it means more than it did. Grant is a person who believes in monogamy and thinks that people should be in relationships. When he wakes up to his best friend in his bed, he panics and drops her off into her own bed. A few years have passed and the two are now face to face in a business setting. Chloe is a hot shot FBI agent and Grant is about to be her partner. The two realize that there's a sh*t ton of unresolved issues and know that it needs to be fixed before they can work together. Is this the second chance that is needed for Grant to show Chloe that relationships are not all that bad? Or, will their job affect their budding relationship? Being FBI agents, the job comes first and it's about to throw some wrenches into the road. *Teaser! My hand has been grabbed and he laced our fingers together. Such a simple touch shouldn’t mean this much, but it does. “What are you thinking about over there?” I smile at him and squeeze his hand. “Just thinking about you…” “How handsome I am?” I blurt out a laugh and roll my neck. “You are so humble.” This is what I love about being with him. I love the fact that we can still be silly together and know that we can be ourselves. None of that heavy shit where we have to talk about our feelings and all of that. “Finally!” I yell and unbuckle my seat belt as he pulls into the garage. I’m half tempted to jump over the seat and molest him. Grant swaggers over to me and opens the door for me to get out. I laugh when he grabs my hand and kisses the top of my hand. “My lady,” he bows in front of me with my hand to his lips. Before I can say anything, he has picked me up and thrown me over his shoulders. “Hey!” I yell but he swats my ass and my body falls like a sack of potatoes on his back. “Put me down!” No use! He shuffles me so that my stomach is laying on his shoulder and my body is hanging down. *This is part of a series that is set to unfold all of the questions that you have.

Overall had a good storyline, has a love story, drama, action, suspense and leads you into the next story. Chloe is an agent tasked at tracking down the bad guys. Grant is also an agent who transfers into her task force. Chloe and Grant have known each other for many years. Dating is technically not allowed, so they are keeping it as quiet as possible working together. Chloe gets a huge surprise with one of her busts and is really surprised at who the culprit is. Supporting characters have an active role in the book and throw in twists for these main characters. I look forward to how Eden writes the next book in this series because it ended with a huge abrupt ending.

I’ve been going through this rollercoaster ride of my emotions being thrown around for 3 hours…AND IT ENDED THIS WAY?I think it’s safe to say that I NEED THE SECOND NOVEL IN THIS SERIES!Cuffed is my first novel from Eden Rose and from what I have read, I am definitely going to read her other novels!Honestly, I thought Cuffed was going to end with fluffy unicorns and pink clouds. You know, happy endings and all that.Guess what?!Get ready to be thrown around by Grant and Chloe’s awesome friendship, fast and hot love, and events that will scare the hell out of Grant, Chloe, you, me and anyone who reads this! The plot is awesome, the writing was okay, the characters are complicated, I couldn’t understand some part of it but everything was alright in the end!Speaking of complicated characters, Chloe is seriously one of the most complicated character ever. I feel really distressed, sad, worried…you name it.This book may not be for everyone but I recommend you guys to give it a go! Cuffed, especially for its plot, is really amazing!*Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for a honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not the book I expected it to be, remember, "Don't judge a book by it's cover." By Dana Busenbark Who and what is Chloe? Why is she seeing someone named Mable and calling her names? We then go back to Chloe in college. We see that she's the Darling of the Sorority that she's a member of, her boyfriend Ethan and her roommate Grant are members of the Fraternity. What happens at one of the last parties that they will go to as college students? What are their goals and dreams for when they graduate? What happens when Ethan gets drunk and paws at Chloe and she takes exception to it? What happens to Grant and his girlfriend Brittany? It is great to see that Christine, Chloe's friend from University, is with her during the present day. I love it when friends can remain close like that. Things between Chloe and Ethan are ho hum, but with Grant, talk about heat and being erotic when they're together. SMOKIN'!!! What is going on at Chloe's job makes things interesting, especially when Grant shows back up and is assigned as her partner. What happens when a woman named Natasha comes in under an immunity deal and starts laying out information? What does Grant do? What happens? Things get even more interesting when it comes to Chloe's brother, Barry. What's going on with him now? Where is he? This book is full of action, love, hate, fear, joy, happiness and sadness. This book was hard to put down as I read it. Enjoy the read! Note there is a cliff hanger on this one!RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin' With M.Brennan.

Standing above the dramatic arches underpinning the Basilica of Assisi and carried away by the beauty of the moment, Joan and Roger were determined to move to Italy. It took time, effort, grit, money, heavy doses of humor, and even stronger servings of Italian pazienza; but in the end, move they did. Launching a new career hosting vacationers, they persevered, renovating Le Vigne; an old farmhouse. This is their story of good fortune, at times matched in equal measure with frustration. They made their dream come true. Here are their Italian lessons.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Perfetto! By James Huber For anyone who dreams of living in Italy, I highly recommend Italian Lessons. Having read Michael Tucker's Living in a Foreign Language: A Memoir of Food, Wine, and Love in Italy, I have doubted whether a non-Hollywooder without an entourage of staff could ever dream of such an adventure. I found Joan Arndt's descriptions of the challenges of leaving the US behind, finding and establishing a home in Umbria, and starting a new life as an ex-pat in Italy extremely realistic and achievable. The entertaining read is filled with sage advice for navigating the journey from life in the US to the discovery of an Umbrian home and a new perspective on living. For those who dream of running away from home and making a new life in Italy, "Italian Lessons" is definitely the book for you.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Italian Adventure By Dana Payne Joan Arndt's delightful first novel, Italian Lessons, recounts her and Roger's relocation adventure and ensuing life as ex-patriots in Umbria, Italy. Their journey from Atlanta, Georgia to Assisi and points around culminates in finding Le Vigne, their home and rental property near Perugia. Reading Joan's book made me want to experience life at Le Vigne, and after enjoying Roger and Joan's gracious hospitality in their beautiful setting amid their olive groves and gardens, well, that made me want to re-read the book and experience again their Umbrian adventure. I anxiously await further tales from Joan and have already booked my second stay at Le Vigne. (By the way, I have read many other stories of ex-pats in Italy, France, and Spain, and highly recommend Joan's book for any armchair traveler, but beware, you will likely want to jet over and experience Le Vigne yourself.)

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A fantastic insider's view By Deanne E. Vanke What an enjoyable read! Joan Arndt takes the reader on an experience of a lifetime, sharing what it was like for her and husband Roger to completely uproot from the U.S. and set up life and business in Italy. The reader experiences every adventure (and misadventure!) along the way, gaining an unbelievable insider's view of life as an Italian vs any images one might have as a tourist visiting Italy. All told through Ms. Arndt's humor-filled style, it's like the reader is sitting having coffee with her at Starbuck's and she's recounting tale after tale. Very approachable, fun read... I highly recommend it.

The author dedicated one chapter about the art of reciprocation which I found it to be extremely true and helpful if one can master it. Especially in business, everybody needs to work with everybody, and whether or not people will do you a favour depends on how you asked and if you know how to maintain that relationship.Come back to the book, I'd recommend people to read more regarding to this and also other by getting this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. You will definitely benefit from reading this book. By Ma. Antonia Amorsolo The human mind is a wonderful thing, capable of the most wonderful thought processes and ideas. Yet the brain is on automatic pilot for most situations. That allows the conscious mind to really focus. The drawback is that some people will use our conscious inattention to sneak one by us, like a fastball pitch to a hitter looking for a change-up. Psychological Influence by Dan Miller is very useful in this regard, because it uses interesting examples to help us be aware of our own tendency to let automatic pilot thinking take over. Most books of applied psychology fall prey to one of two weaknesses: Either they lack scientific content or over-simplify or they present solid information in an academic manner that readers find difficult to absorb and apply. Dan Miller's book stands out brilliantly from these books. Combining wide and deep scientific scholarship with an engaging, lucid, and personal style, this book may be the single best work on the topic at present. The intent of the book is to show how we can understand and defend against pervasive non-rational influences on our decision-making. Of course the same principles could be applied to market products or influence colleagues and rivals either in place of or in addition to genuine reasons. I highly recommend this book to all professionals. It does not matter if you are a manager, sales person, pastor, or non-profit volunteer. The ideas in this book, once applied, will make it easier for you to accomplish your goals.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Useful information By Amy I think people are resistant to the idea of the power of persuasion, but that is what we do each time we convince someone into buying into our idea or product. This book has so much useful information on how to persuade other people and make them think that you have the right idea. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone in a sales role, as it will help you to achieve and exceed your goals.
