This work is an examination of a number of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and ESL (English as a Second Language) textbooks used in lessons for a variety of students at a tertiary institution in South Korea. The methods used in this study are inspired by Critical Discourse Analysis, Cultural Studies and Social Semiotics. Particular attention is given to how hegemony is reproduced in these textbooks as well as how inequalities in race, gender, sexuality, and ability are perpetuated. This work asks the questions: Do English language textbooks include images, views, stories or characters from different backgrounds, cultures, genders, sexualities or abilities? How do these textbooks represent members of other groups if they do? And what role do members of other groups play? The research indicates that EFL and ESL textbooks maintain and perpetuate the dominant discourses favoured or privileged by Western Eurocentric thought as well as the hegemony of the host country's (in this case South Korea) political powers. It is hoped that this work will encourage educators, students, and administrators to demand and/ or create English language textbooks that are moulded by critical content in the future.

By Deiby Gomez Database Upgrades and Migrations is a very huge area, there are different combinations involving settings in source database, target database, source environments, target environments, methods to migrate/upgrade, and all the bugs that you can find etc. So many things that sometimes we don't know how or where to start learning it. If you feel like you must know it but you don't know how to start, and from which book to learn because you don't want to waste your time reading a book that won't be useful for you, I recommend this book. With this book you will know the most important methods and you will get a clear idea of how to start in this lake of knowledge, for sure this book will be useful for you and your career. I agreed to review because there are very few single sources of information for the topic that span the range of methods to upgrade or migrate between database types, vendors, versions and use different techniques based on the criteria and business reasons for upgrading. In class, I was often asked how to handle a variety of upgrade or migration scenarios, and this is truly the first book I have seen that identifies many of the possibilities and techniques. The book provides a framework to follow, shows different scenarios in which to use the techniques, and helps understand the various costs and benefits associated with each technique. If nothing else, it is worth reading to give some ideas how to start to approach your upgrade or migration.

By SG Top NYPD detective and a Pulitzer prize winning author. Acumen meets out of the box. We all know and love the story of TV series Castle. The concept has been loved by TV viewers and readers of the books in this series. This is the seventh book and I enjoyed reading it.As for this book, the characters are well developed and the story moves at a steady pace. There are suspenseful moments, chases and mysteries at every corner and keep the reader's interest alive. For all readers who have enjoyed this genre of writing, the book will not disappoint. It is a quintessential Castle book. I am not giving out any spoiler alerts yet as it is fairly new in the market.As for the relationship between Nikki and Rook, I felt the author has given a tad extra reference to this throughout the story. In the early editions of this series, I had absolutely loved the slight romantic and sexual tension that existed between these two protagonists while they worked on solving cases. It was presented very sharply and gave us some great moments in some otherwise very tense and suspenseful situations. In this edition, however, the relationship is almost as important as the other links. Their conversation, the sexual innuendos, the physical intimacy, the collision of personalities is definitely a natural progression of the story but I expected it to be a bit more sharp (I still liked what I got) while still giving us the WOW moments we have been used to.For users checking this review and still in two minds whether to buy this book or not - if you expect the book to stick to the sharp yet vulnerable Nikki and goofy Rook without a full blown relationship, it might slightly disappoint you. If you feel the natural flow of the story demands a different mindset of the protagonists and you are OK with more romance and relation turmoil, go ahead and read it; you can decide whether you like it or not. For readers who are all out to see Nikki and Rook going for it, go ahead and but it now. What killed me is the magnitude of errors in the book with grammar and if I remember correctly spelling as well. Do people not get edited anymore? If this was edited; that person needs to be fired.

By Terri I have read all of "Castle's" Nikki Heat series and was disappointed in the latest book, Driving Heat. I am glad to see that I am not the only one who thought that the book was written by a different author than the previous books in the series. The tone and style was not the same. The plot seemed to drag, and their relationship was rehashed unnecessarily. Nikki's character seemed different somehow from the earlier books--hesitant and unsure (I don't think it was because of their engagement or her new job). My other complaint is the poor proofreading--or lack of proofreading--in the text. There is no excuse for this in an electronic book that costs almost $10 for a download. Please start paying someone to proofread, Amazon! Many of us readers could do a better job of it!!

It's short, but it has all the information you need to survive on the Internet jungle, and get to the top! I wish I'd had this book a year ago, it would have helped me get my business off the ground much more quickly and recover my losses. The book sounds really difficult to get through, and doesn't look like a definite page turner, but I can assure you that's not the case. He outlines what authority sites are, how to use them and how to make your webpage go up, up and up in ranking when searched for. In essence, this is a war, and the author shows you how to win it.The techniques illustrated are simple, easy to implement and will get your website up and running in no time. Jules Vincent uses simple terminology and introduces new terms with ease, which makes life easier for people like me who find it difficult to use the Internet to keep up with most businesses. Mr.Vincent is completely on point when he writes "...but in today's digital landscape, playing nice will get you absolutely nowhere. If you want to succeed, you have to treat this as if you are fighting for your life".If that won't make you check this out, I'm not quite sure what will.

I really thought she was as in love with Alonzo as he was with her. Alonzo was the real deal and she didn't even know it. She hurt two of the most important people in her life. She got what she desrved in the end.

You should definitely check out her other series! This story shows you that karma is alive and real. A part of me felt bad for Tanji at the end but she really did bring it on herself. She was just too damn shady.

The Race

January 29, 2009, 1:15 p.m.,Oval Office, the White House As he filed into the Oval Office behind the power players who were already household names in Washington—top presidential adviser David Axelrod, chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan—Jon Schnur thought that he had spent years waiting to have this meeting.1 Until now he had been jilted. The Democrats he had worked for had always backed away from the education reforms he championed. And they hadn’t been elected. Schnur, then forty-three, got interested in education when, as an editor of his high school newspaper, he read a draft of an article by a student who had transferred from a Milwaukee public school to his school in the city’s suburbs. “She was savvier than any of us on the editorial board, but the draft was just so terribly written,” he says. “The more I got to know her, the more I became obsessed with why public education hadn’t reached people like her.” After he graduated from Princeton, where he had volunteered as a tutor in a nearby high school, Schnur worked in Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign, then landed an education policy job in his administration. That was when Schnur started to distrust his assumptions about why American public education had collapsed to a point where it was an obstacle to the American dream rather than the enabler. As he studied research trickling in by the late 1990s, he began to believe that failure or success in America’s schoolrooms, especially in its poorest communities, didn’t depend mostly on what kind of home a child came from or whether the school had enough resources, which is what most liberals like Schnur had always assumed. Instead, he concluded, it had to do more with the teacher in front of the class. Truly effective teaching, he came to believe, could overcome student indifference, parental disengagement, and poverty—and, in fact, was the key to enabling children to rise above those circumstances. However, as the studies and the reports from a new kind of public school called “charter schools” were finding, successful teaching was grueling work. It required more talent, more preparation, more daily reevaluation and retooling, more hours in the class day, and just plain more perseverance than many teachers, and most teachers’ union contracts, were willing or able to provide. In Schnur’s view, the unions and those who ran the nation’s increasingly bureaucratic school systems had settled on low expectations for children, which allowed them not to be held accountable when the children continued to fail. Change those expectations; put good, determined teachers and principals in there; retrain or, if necessary, remove those who were not effective; and “demography will no longer be destiny,” Schnur and his fellow reformers believed. That presented a dilemma if you were a Democrat, because the Democratic Party had come to rely on teachers’ unions as its strongest base of support. By 1998, Schnur was Vice President Al Gore’s education policy aide. During his boss’s 2000 presidential campaign, he persuaded Gore to give a speech to the Michigan teachers’ union about the need to pay teachers based on how effective they were in boosting their students’ performance, an idea that struck at the core of union contracts that mandated lockstep compensation based only on how many years a teacher had been teaching, or what graduate degrees the teacher held. Gore hadn’t flinched. He hadn’t even tinkered with some of the language that Schnur had made tougher in anticipation that the vice president or someone else would water it down. Right after the speech, the air came out of Schnur’s balloon. Within days, the two national teachers’ unions—which donate three times more money to Democrats than any other union or industry group and whose members account for more than 25 percent of all union members in the country and 10–15 percent of the delegates to the Democratic Party convention that chooses the presidential nominee—had complained to higher-ups in the Gore campaign. Without anyone’s informing Schnur, Gore’s education reform positions disappeared from the campaign issues material. Gore never again mentioned teacher quality in his campaign, or any of the other education reforms that Schnur proposed. In the presidential debates between Gore and George W. Bush, the Texas governor talked about how he had pushed to make his state’s schools and their teachers accountable for performance by requiring all students to be tested so their progress could be measured. Gore said testing by school systems should be voluntary and called for more federal aid to hire more teachers and pay them all more. Four years later, Schnur signed on to help John Kerry, who as a senator had taken an interest in education reform. He drafted policy papers and a speech or two. The Kerry 2004 presidential campaign used none of them. Now, as he took his seat on a sofa near the fireplace in the Oval Office, Schnur recalled how Obama ’08 had been completely different. Since coming to the Senate in 2005, Barack Obama had been talking about education in ways that would have alarmed the teachers’ unions, if they had cared enough to notice what a junior senator was saying. In 2006, he introduced legislation to provide federal aid to school districts that initiated reforms, such as linking teachers’ pay and promotions to how well their students advanced on tests during the school year. The legislation went nowhere. And just two days after he announced his presidential candidacy, on a swing through Iowa to compete in the state’s bellwether caucuses, he had answered a question about increasing teachers’ salaries by saying that, yes, teachers should be paid more but that “there’s also going to have to be accountability,” and that students’ performance on standardized tests “has to be part of the mix.” “Such candor is refreshing,” David Yepsen, the influential political columnist for the Des Moines Register, wrote the next day, adding that he had asked Obama after his talk if a “candidate can win if he tells Democratic constituency groups things they don’t want to hear.” “We’ll see,” Obama responded. Obama’s main opponent, Hillary Clinton, enjoyed the longtime support and friendship of American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten. She had been a co-chair of Clinton’s first New York senate campaign. Clinton responded to Obama’s stance by calling merit pay divisive and insulting to teachers. A few weeks after Obama’s comment in Iowa, Schnur and campaign issues director Heather Higginbottom had presented him with an eight-point education reform platform. Higginbottom, then thirty-eight, had been Senator John Kerry’s legislative director and then his issues director in his 2004 presidential run. So she and Schnur were longtime collaborators, and education reform was her favorite issue, too. Perhaps because of the disappointing experience in the Kerry campaign, when education reform had been trumped by the political team’s fear of the teachers’ unions, they were apprehensive that Obama might cut out or water down one or two of their most union-offending ideas. Obama signed off on all eight points with little discussion, other than to tell them, “This is what I’ve been saying for a long time. . . . Just don’t poke the unions in the eye with this. No anti-union rhetoric, and keep channels of communication open with them.”2 So nothing about this Oval Office session with the new president should have made Schnur nervous. In fact, he was thrilled that eight days into Obama’s presidency, amid the fierce economic crisis and other issues that commanded his attention, Obama had reserved a half hour to deal with education. Yet Schnur was nervous anyway, not only because those other Democrats had failed him before, but also because, in terms of its prescriptions for changing K–12 education across the country and how much money it proposed to make that happen, the plan that he, Higginbottom, and Duncan had cooked up was far beyond what any president had ever dared. In a December transition meeting, Obama had signed off more generally on the direction he would follow in education reform. Now it was time for specifics, and the specifics were not conventional. Schnur had written a three-page memo summarizing how the Obama administration would take the $800 billion economic stimulus package the president was about to propose and carve out $15 billion as a jackpot to be divided among ten to fifteen states that won a contest related to education reform. It would be a real contest, with no state able to prevail because of size or political influence. The winners would be states that submitted the best, most credible specific plans for using data and student-testing systems to evaluate teachers based on student improvement; for creating compensation and tenure systems for principals and teachers that would be based on their effectiveness in boosting their students’ proficiency; for taking over and turning around consistently failing schools; and for encouraging alternatives to traditional public schools—such as charter schools. The proposed contest had a catchy name: Race to the Top. Schnur had brought thirty pages of backup material that had been attached to the three-pager when it was sent to the president. But Obama, sitting in a chair opposite his desk to the right of Schnur’s sofa, said he had read it and didn’t need to go over it again. In fact, Schnur and Higginbottom, who was also at this Oval Office meeting, were delighted to see that the president had underlined the part of the memo—and put a big check mark in the margin next to it—that said that not all states would get the money, just those that deserved it on the merits of their reform plans. The new president asked the others what they thought. Axelrod, sitting on the couch across from Schnur and Duncan, jumped in and said that the unions would erupt in opposition, which could endanger support for the overall stimulus package among the Democrats whom Obama would need to get it through. This was not the way aid bills were done, Axelrod added, a point that was seconded by Obama’s just-appointed congressional liaison. It was a direct assault on congressional prerogatives. The members of Congress would insist that, as with most aid programs and certainly ones involving billions of dollars, every state and congressional district should get the money proportionately, rather than have it parceled out to a chosen few by the White House or the education secretary. The unions would fan the flames on that, he added, reminding powerful senators and representatives, who chaired the relevant committees and were the unions’ traditional allies and recipients of campaign support, that their states or districts might get nothing. Schnur and Duncan knew that many of the states that were home to influential Democrats on Capitol Hill, particularly California but also Wisconsin and New York, were unlikely to win any contests related to education reform unless a booby prize was awarded. Duncan, an education reformer who had gotten to know Obama because he had been running Chicago’s school system until his appointment to the cabinet, kept that thought to himself. This was a singular opportunity for the president to act on something he cared a lot about, he told Obama. Schnur—who is deferential and soft-spoken, even when he is the person in the room who knows the most, as he often is—spoke haltingly to the new president. He said he thought they could overcome any opposition on the Hill because this was only $15 billion in an $800 billion package and because there was such goodwill, on the Democratic side, at least, toward the new president. Although he did not volunteer it, Schnur knew that George Miller, the senior Democrat in the House on education issues, would support the contest. Schnur had already checked with him. Miller had long been out of sync with the teachers’ unions and more traditional Democrats on education reform, in part because of his experience as a volunteer at a hard-pressed school in his California district. “We shouldn’t just write checks,” Miller had told Schnur. “We should make them do something for it.” As a congressman, Emanuel had co-authored a book the year before on domestic policy, in which he touted education reform of the kind Schnur was now pushing. And as the incoming chief of staff he had on more than one occasion good-naturedly egged on domestic policy aide Higginbottom with whispers of “education reform, education reform” when they passed in the halls at the Chicago transition office. “You don’t get any do-overs in education; you get one shot to succeed or fail with a kid, and our schools were mostly failing,” Emanuel says, explaining his passion for the issue. Now Emanuel butted in, saying, “We’ve got to do this. It’s a great plan. . . . This is our great opportunity. And I know we can get a lot of Democrats to support it.” The boss seemed to have made up his mind. “Yes, let’s do it,” Obama said. “I always say this is supposed to be about the kids, not the adults.” “Just make sure,” the president added, repeating what he’d told Schnur and the others in Iowa, “that we don’t poke the unions in the eye with this. Just do what we have to do.” •   •   • With that decision, Obama unleashed a swirl of forces whose ferocity would exceed anything even Schnur expected. Parents would march in Los Angeles and Tallahassee demanding the reforms the contest prescribed. The “Race” and education reform would become defining issues in elections from Florida to Colorado to the District of Columbia. Key laws and regulations would be changed in Michigan, Louisiana, Nevada, Tennessee, and thirty other states. Indeed, something unusual broke out across America: a substantive policy debate that engaged a broad swath of the citizenry and their elected officials in villages, cities, state capitals, and in Washington—and that actually produced results. All of that happened because the contest for the stimulus money became a call to arms for a snowballing network of education reformers across the country—an unlikely army of non-traditional urban school chiefs, charter school leaders, researchers at think tanks who were producing data about how teaching counted more than anything else, philanthropists and hedge-fund billionaires who ate up the data, fed-up parents, and a growing corps of unconventional Democratic politicians. Having worked for years in cities and towns across the country, almost unnoticed except among education bureaucrats, they now sprang up and took center stage. Schnur, a behind-the-scenes player, seemed to be at the center of the network. Everyone seemed to know him, even people who didn’t know each other. At the same time, the Race to the Top became a call to the barricades for those who had held back the reformers for years with arguments that their theories were simplistic and untested, and that they glossed over the real obstacles of poverty and racism while scapegoating the one group—educators—who really understood the issues and who really cared. The leader in making that argument would be Randi Weingarten, who was fifty-one when the Race was launched and who would assume an increasingly high national profile in the two years that followed. A savvy New Yorker whose mother had been an elementary school teacher for twenty-nine years, Weingarten is a talented leader, able and relentlessly eager to make the case that teachers and her American Federation of Teachers are dedicated enablers of children’s success, not self-interested impediments. For years she had teased her mother that she had become a lawyer and her sister an emergency room doctor because neither wanted to work as hard as she had seen her mother work. Schnur’s Race to the Top—because it called for a sweeping overhaul of a system where no one had been held accountable, and because it enlisted the nation’s school chiefs, mayors, and governors in a “contest” that caught on in the media—would force Weingarten’s side to play defense in political arenas that this side had traditionally dominated. The onslaught would become so heavy in so many places that Weingarten would start confiding to friends that she feared her union was destined to meet the fate of the United Auto Workers, which had been crippled when competing, nonunion carmakers almost put Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler out of business by producing better, cheaper cars. •   •   • In Weingarten’s world, charter schools were to teachers’ unions and conventional public schools what Toyota or Honda had been to the autoworkers’ union and the big three Detroit automakers. So it especially alarmed her that encouraging the growth of charter schools would be one of the ways a state could score points in the Race to the Top. First promoted by the Clinton administration in the 1990s, charter schools are publicly financed and open to any child, but they are run by entities other than the conventional local school district. Typically, they are operated by nonprofit organizations that rely on donations to provide seed money to launch the school but then use the same amount, or less taxpayer money per pupil, as is doled out to the public schools for ongoing operations. Those who run charters are accountable for the school’s performance. However, they are free to manage as they wish, which includes the freedom to hire teachers who are not union members. Students are admitted based on a lottery; these are public schools with no admissions requirements or any other filters (other than the lottery when applications outnumber seats). Charters were a relatively minor factor in the plans the states had to present to win the Race to the Top. However, because Weingarten and her side directed so much vitriol at charters, the role of charter schools in the Race to the Top would get more attention than it deserved. The Obama plan was not about charter schools. Nor is this book about charter schools, except insofar as charters illuminate larger points in the overall battle over public education. By 2009, out of 95,000 American public schools, fewer than 5,000 were charter schools. So they are unlikely in the short term (or even in the long term) to replace a significant portion of traditional public schools. The larger issues around education reform have to do with how the traditional public schools, run by the government, can be changed. That is why Schnur’s Race to the Top would award only a fraction of the points necessary for a state to be one of the winners based on how much or little the state encouraged charters. The most points would go to states that demonstrated commitments to systemic reforms intended to improve their government-run public schools. Nonetheless, school reformers like Schnur like to point to charters as the experiments that prove the case for those systemic reforms. They argue that the larger significance of charter schools is that the ones that work not only demonstrate that children from the most challenged homes and communities can learn but also suggest how traditional public schools might be changed to make them operate effectively. It can make for an especially compelling argument when a charter school and a traditional urban public school are operating side by side in the same building. 1 Unless otherwise noted, thoughts attributed to anyone in this narrative are based on the author’s having talked to that person. Dixon Jr. As a teacher for thirty-five years, I find Brill's book a great discussion of education policy in America. It is not really a book about, or concerning teachers, it's really about the development and administration of education policy. Still, this is a good book for teachers to read; it is a great book for administers to read. At any rate, I recommend it. I find Brill's style very readable and I admire the way he has threaded his way through the maze of issues involved in the world of education. To be sure, teachers' unions come off as huge obstructionists in the development of a workable and modern educational system. They are more concerned with their members than with students. But, that is the job of every union and, remember, without the unions there would not be things called weekends or sick leave or anything else resembling humane treatment of working people. I do not belong to a union, never have (except for a two-year stint working for the US gov't - AFGE). I have had thirty-five one-year contracts (or shorter!). I have been treated fairly and well. Others have not been so lucky. Brill does a good job in portraying the unions as not only obstructionist, but also necessary in this battle. Some charter school folks don't come off so well here, either. One thing gripes me a bit about many of these characters portrayed here: not one seems to have taught for more than a couple of years, and yet they always know everything about teaching and need to tell everyone how right they are. Even Michelle Rhee, with whom I agree on many things, taught for a couple of years before she called it quits. Setting policy and supervising teachers IS much easier than teaching itself. That, for me, seems to be a quiet subtext of Brill's work.If you are looking for a book on teaching, this is not the one. Look at the works of Alfie Kohn or Jonathan Kozol. Those are the real experts. But this book is a great history of the mess we find ourselves in wherever there are public schools, teachers' unions and administrators who think they know more than they really do.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Conflicting Signals By Marc Korman I found Class Warfare to be an engaging yet frustrating book with many conflicting signals. As most reviews of the book (here and in the press at the time of its release) indicate the author takes a strong position against the teachers unions for the majority of the book and then, in the conclusion, adopts a more conciliatory tone. The engaging part of the book is the tour it takes the readers on of a few different school systems, charter school efforts, and individuals seeking to reform education through reduced teacher tenure and process protections and increased evaluations. Some of the figures discussed are familiar such as former New York Schools Chancellor Joel Klein and former DC Superintendent Michelle Rhee. Others, such as Charter school evangelicals Eva Moskowitz, Jeff Canada, and Jessica Reid are less familiar though given the volume of books and documentaries discussing education reform as of late they are not totally unfamiliar. The book also takes us inside the Democrats for Education Reform organization and discusses its impact on the Obama Administration and No Child Left Behind.The book has quite a few factual errors which an editor should have caught. John Edwards was a Senator from North Carolina (not South Carolina), Ferraro was the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee in 1984 (not 1988), a DC Council vote could not be 31-3 because the Council only has 13 members, and a "recent" term limits law in New York was from 1996. Those were the ones I knew about but who knows what else could be in there. Far more frustrating, and ironic given the book's conclusion, was the suspicion with which the author treated those outside the education reform movement. Every statement of motive of American Federation of Teachers head Randi Weingarten or education historian Diane Ravitch was scrutinized and fact checked while it seemed like no anecdote by those on the other side was examined. A great example was near the beginning of the book where the author recounts Joel Klein's first day on the job as chancellor and one of the administrators not answering the phone because, to paraphrase, "it was just a parent calling to complain." It certainly could be a true story, but similar tales by those with which Klein (and the author) tend to disagree led to follow-up by the author and a conclusion that it could not be verified.The book's conclusion is controversial but probably pragmatically correct. It takes a lot of teachers to serve our students and not all of them will be able to work the 20 hour days the gold standards Brill points to seem to work (or work until they burn out, as the book recounts). To "scale" education reform is going to require the involvement of those already teaching and to do so through an organized body, like a union, has a lot of benefit and has already been successful in some places, such as Colorado. An additional nitpick is the author's repeated dismissive attitude to Maryland's race to the top application with no explanation as to why the state was so undeserving (I'm from Maryland). The book spends a few pages on the Race to the Top evaluations which it concludes, based on quotes from reformers, did not reach correct conclusions because some pro-reform states such as Louisiana and Colorado were left out. I found the reformers distaste for the supposedly objective testing metric to be ironic, though I recognize they are not proposing an exact replica of a competitive grant program for teacher evaluations.America's schools are a mixed bag and Brill gives an interesting, if largely one-sided (until the conclusion) of the past few years of reform efforts. It is a story that will continue.

Race to the Top By templedelasol I loved Stephen Brill's article titled "Super Teachers are Not Enough" (Wall Street Journal), as well as his 'Rubber Room' article in the New Yorker. I did not love this book. It really is just about all the circumstances and people surrounding the Race to the Top bill and implementation. Most of the people he was profiling were millionaires who wanted to 'do good' by supporting ed reform/charter schools. I am a fourth grade public school teacher working in a Southern California barrio/ Title 1 school. It was hard to relate to the hedge fund managers, venture capitalists, and 'Yalies' he profiled. I couldn't help but feel it was all just a game for them and he was the designated cheerleader. I understand he has a pro-reform point of view but when he twice described a simple comment from Randi Weingarten as 'bragging' I felt his ship was dangerously listing to one side. He profiles one educator, Jessica Reid, a charter school teacher and all around teaching goddess. She stuns him by quitting because her lifestyle is not 'sustainable'. He makes a great point at the end that effective teaching is a marathon, not a sprint. I wanted to know more about this and hear from teachers who successfully balanced their lives while remaining effective. I was disappointed in the book overall. It was about as interesting as reading a play by play of a football game and he did not expand enough on his most interesting point (Super Teachers are Not Enough). I preferred The Bee Eater, a bio of Michelle Rhee. It is a much more compelling description of the ed reform movement. I am somewhere in the middle politically: a former NEA union rep who believes strongly in working hard to help my students achieve. I resent lazy teachers when I am working so hard (and we are getting paid the same), but I am also very grateful for my tenure (especially in this economy). I want to understand these issues more fully so that I can anticipate what is coming down the track which may effect my career. To some extent this book met that need, but it may be more interesting to those fascinated by ed policy rather than those in the trenches actually teaching.

By T Banks A lot has been written about the benefits of preparing our students to be ready for the challenges of the 21st Century. Today's educators are faced with the rigorous task of teaching our students the skills it will take to ensure they are prepared to compete in a globally competitive workforce. As a retired teacher and administrator of 32 years, and currently chairperson of our local board of education, Dr. Smith takes a complicated process and simplifies it into workable, realistic and manageable chunks. Today's educators do not have the time or the need to undertake such a process without guidance. Fortunately for these educators, Dr. Smith has written about his experiences and challenges in starting a STEM school and shared them with us in his new book. He provides educators with over 40 ideas and actions and more than 300 tips for success. Dr. Smith shares his successes and pitfalls. He also provides numerous websites for classroom resources and grant opportunities. As an educator new to STEM schools or as an educator who is well versed in the subject, I would highly recommend using his book for inspiration and suggestions. By Amber Gregg Awakening Your STEM School is a book of ideas, examples, and tools for successfully running a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math education) school. Its main focus is preparing students to work in those fields.I want to tell you all a little background about myself before I review this book. I actually live very close to the STEM school featured in this book in Coastal Virginia. I just recently moved here, but it is already very easy to why a STEM school would perform exceptionally well here. We have Navy bases with tons of Navy ships, plus large jets flying overhead, nearby airports, many science-related museums, crazy underwater tunnels, and an engineer's paradise. We actually moved here because my husband got a job working at an engineering firm.My background is in early childhood education, so I am not an expect in high school STEM, but I do know the importance of actual experiences as a learning process (versus reading textbooks and listening to lectures). So any time a school can provide hands-on experiences, it is sure to be a memorable learning event. I won’t get into the politics regarding magnet schools, but I can see how a school like this would be great for students who maybe didn’t feel like a great student in elementary school. Literacy is the main focus in the early years of education, so students who have more logical and mathematical minds, tend to feel like poorer students. So it is wonderful that a STEM school can give all the practical and logical students skills that are applicable in many high demand careers.Now back to the book itself. There are some personal narratives in this story, which tie everything together, but aren't the strong part of this book. The writing isn’t as remarkable as most books, however, to meet my point from above, this is someone with a math and science mindset, not a reading and writing mindset. By Karen Stein Our school systems are constantly being reminded to prepare our students for the workforce especially in jobs related to science, technology, engineering and math. But how can one go about transforming his or her school to be a STEM school? Dr. Aaron Smith does a fantastic job of laying the foundation to implement such a program. He relays personal experiences, both good and bad, to help teachers and administrators begin or modify their own program initiatives. He stresses heavily that creating a STEM learning environment is a school team effort. Getting teachers, administrators, students and parents on board is not as hard as it may appear especially with Dr. Smith's ideas to garner local business and science community support through viable and sustaining partnerships. Each chapter concludes with ideas in action to keep progress on track. He also includes appendices of valuable resources for lesson planning, technology applications and grant funding resources. Reading this book will definitely inspire and encourage!

I enjoyed all the books about each couple but was curious about how Mario & Tia's relationship would continue. Of course each couple had their problems, very realistic problems and a realistic happy ending. They were able to work thru it but I still think if could be more to their stories. Trinity Wise did an excellent job and I LOVED THE HOT SEX...always the best thing about a romance novel to me!! I will definitely keep this author on my "to be read" list.

I was so excited when I found out that we were getting the wrap up to all four couples in one book. And as ususal, this author did not disappoint. I was so happy with this book and everything that happened in it. In order to get all my thoughts in, I'm going to go couple by couple.Carlos and Aria- These two are married with two kids already when their story picks up. And while everything seems to be alll well in their world, there is a black hole that goes by the description of Aria's job. Yes, she is still with the Stafford Corp and steadily climbing that coorporate ladder. But her drive to succeed at work is taking a toll on her home life. Especially where Los is concerned. To round out their story, add in a lot of late nights, one sexy--persistent--co worker and here comes the drama!!!Gabriel and Alexis- Now, even though I love this couple, I have to say I wanted to shove Alexis off a bridge!!! But, it's only because Gabe is MINE!!!!! LOL!! Now that I have that out of the way, theirs was one storyline I was concerned about. I mean, especially with Dorain showing up. (read to find out about him) I mean, can you blame me? You take one meddling, scheming mother and throw in a unknown and unknowing father....man....I was worried about this family. But as ususal, my Gabbey Cakes rose to the occassion. He was the man I always knew him to be. Sure he has his thuggish moments, but in this book I saw his softer side. Especially where his girls were concerned. In my eyes him and....*grunt* Alexis deserve a HEA!!! I will say, I kind of wanted Alexis to stomp her mother in the face....but hey...that's just me. LOL!Mario and Tia- I couldn't wait to see how their story played out. Their book ended with Mario being left a baby he'd conceived with his one night stand--who was also a childhood friend. The baby was then left to him and his wife with simple instructions asking them to care for him.We also found out some truths about Tia that went all the way back to her childhood. And after all the drama they went through in their book, I wonderd how things were going to unfold in the finale. Okay, so....Tia's sister--Bethany--comes into the picture and can I just say that I would have liked to line her up in front of Alexis's mom and get them both with one bullet!!! Yeah, the hate was real!!! She was such a manipulative little b$#ch!! I couldn't stand her. Then you bring in some old characters--I'll just say Aaron and Claudia--and leave it at that. You can imagine the issues that befall this couple. A baby, a sister, and an off the wall nephew....need I say more.Aubrey and Callie- Now, Aubs and Callie were one of my favorite couples in this series. There was just something about their chemistry that was off the chain!!! But I wanted to throttle Callie!!! Or better yet, thrown her off the bridge with Alexis so I could have two of the Washington men to myself!! LOL! Okay, Callie was a little afraid of where her relationship with Aubrey was heading. She'd already done the engagemnet thing--which didn't work out too well--and was not looking for a way back into the situation. Aubrey on the other hand was ready for it all--love, marriage, and children. So what happenes when two people in love can't seem to decide on ther future? I'll tell you-- a lot of jealousy, regrets, and what ifs.This book was fantastic!! I loved the way that each couple had their own issues, but they were issues that were so believable. Like, you could have had friends who were going through these same problems. The chemistry was electric and the sex was HAWT!!!!!! I swear, I have a couple of sections bookmarked on my Kindle. (Ssshhhh....no judgement please) The ending....OMG!!! The ending was the best!!!! I was so excited as I was reading it!! I was glad that after everything they had all been through, love won out and they all got their HEA!Also, I loved the snippet in there about Snow. Prehaps it was an opening to another book, Ms. Wise? We shall see!!
