Linstedt This is an excellent review of how data modeling techniques fit with mathematical formulation. I highly recommend anyone who is in the Data Administration or Data Modeling, or even Data Vault space read through this publication.

By vbcodep This book is really basically a white paper with some good examples of graphing techniques using a variety of tools and languages. It would have been more complete with some real world examples that solved other problems. It's a value on Kindle unlimited but I wouldn't pay the full price to download it. While the paper presented is technically sound, it does not back up any of the applications with any type of solid mathematical theory or proofs. Overall if you need to learn the basics of graph theory this will get you started.

This volume presents the actual words of the people who lived the uncommonly rich history of this chain of barrier islands stretching from the Virginia border southward through Cape Lookout. Readers will enjoy contemporary accounts of the first British settlement in North America and the birth of the first English child on American soil. They’ll read 18th-century letters, articles, and poems about the bloody death of Blackbeard, arguably the most famous of all the pirates. They’ll read the news account of the first powered airplane flights in human history. And the editorial that created America’s first national seashore. And the words of family members who once inhabited the nation’s most iconic lighthouse—part of a matched set of four. Topics include “the Graveyard of the Atlantic,” in a nod to the rough waters that over the centuries have claimed hundreds of vessels, and “Torpedo Junction,” site of “the Great American Turkey Shoot,” the latter nickname bestowed by German submariners during World War II. The volume includes first-person accounts of Civil War battles, a freedmen’s colony, hunt clubs that drew the first wealthy tourists, and lifesavers who used horses to pull surfboats to the water and fired lines by cannon to wrecked vessels. Readers will even hear contemporary stories of the Boy Scout troop that rode ponies descended from ancient shipwrecked animals.

I'm so happy with the ending!Brielle is so happy to finally become Mrs. Knox. Will something stand in their way though? She is still sassy and so sweet!Hudson is still doing what he does best! Teaching Brielle more about being a sub and getting into their new life style.I can not express how much this book makes me happy! I am happy they finally got to the bottom of their problems. The ending was amazing. I hoping for a little novella about their great news. I can not wait to find out more about the other couples as well. I don't want to give away to much about this book but everything about it was amazing.

A CCNP certification equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to plan, implement, secure, maintain, and troubleshoot converged enterprise networks. The CCNP certification requires candidates to pass three 120-minute exams–ROUTE 300-101, SWITCH 300-115, TSHOOT 300-135–that validate the key competencies of network engineers.

The Cisco Networking Academy curriculum consists of three experience-oriented courses that employ industry-relevant instructional approaches to prepare students for professional-level jobs: CCNP ROUTE: Implementing IP Routing, CCNP SWITCH: Implementing IP Switching, and CCNP TSHOOT: Maintaining and Troubleshooting IP Networks.

This course teaches students how to implement, monitor, and maintain routing services in an enterprise network. Students will learn how to plan, configure, and verify the implementation of complex enterprise LAN and WAN routing solutions, using a range of routing protocols in IPv4 and IPv6 environments. The course also covers the configuration of secure routing solutions to support branch offices and mobile workers.

The 21 comprehensive labs in this manual emphasize hands-on learning and practice to reinforce configuration skills.

The problem is, the lab is full of questions, and there is no answer key provided. So there's no way to validate if you have the correct answer to the questions. This makes it very hard to know if you've actually learned what they are supposed to be teaching you. As such, this is of questionable value.

Retirement is great to think about when you think about adventures and experiences, but not that exciting when you think about finances. Very strange considering that our financial picture is where it all begins.I came across this book from looking at Amazon for a few books on retirement concepts for self-employed people, which I am. Retirement IQ caught my attention and I decided to buy it over the others I researched. Never thought I would have spent a holiday weekend reading about retirement, but I got wrapped up in the information, along with my husband, and am eager to evaluate my plan. This is long overdue. It would be easy to know where to go for help with this if I lived in Michigan—Daniel Shub—but I don’t so that’s not an option. Thanks to a great section on questions to ask advisers' and how to pick out the right one for the distribution phase of retirement, I feel more confident in making those calls. Excited, in fact.It would be impossible for someone to read this book and not take something of value away from it, and also to have some questions come to mind that need to be asked. Whether you’re in your early twenties, a decade from retirement, and even retired already, I recommend this book. Daniel’s experience and expertise are a valuable tool that can be taken advantage of. Just Google him and you’ll find out—the guy has an impressive reputation. Thanks for writing this book, Daniel. Putting your wisdom into words has been very helpful to me.

Ebook PDF Still Life with Sierra: A family's quest to find home, by Peggy Sijswerda

Just as life at its best is a journey toward meaning and truth, Still Life with Sierra recounts one family's quest to find where they belong, how they fit in after the tragic death of the author's young daughter rocked their perception of what life should be. Seeking a fresh start, the author, her husband, and their young sons relocated to the Netherlands. "We moved our lives, our belongings, our coffee mugs across the Atlantic, hoping to find a place that felt like home," the author said. Instead, they found something unexpected: that the home they were seeking didn't exist. It evaporated along with the life they used to have, before Sierra died, when the young couple with three small children lived a life that held great promise. This memoir tells of the cascading events that followed Sierra's death as the family searched for a new definition of home. Striving to fill in the blanks, they became pilgrims of the heart, finding it necessary to take measure of who they had become and what life meant to them in order to complete their journey. This is the story of how one family lost their place in the world and then found it again.

I'll admit I am the brother of Peggy, and have read many of the chapters in her Tidewater Women magazine. But I won't rest until I read the rest...Peggy you shine on this - and Sierra must be looking down from heaven and nodding her head :) Bro Tim

Its taken me many years to be able to read this story even though I witnessed first hand some of the early stages of this inspirational family's journey. I think it will help anyone who has experienced loss and struggled with faith. Its also a good read for anyone who has struggled to adjust to a different culture through the process of adventure and traveling - even if its their own. And a life affirming reminder of the importance of living in the moment. Painful reminder though it was, I enjoyed being taken back to the scenes of Virginia in summer - beautiful and passionate. Like the young daughter who gave this book its name.

The honesty, devotion and search for the answers to her grief made me reread the book for I felt there was so much more that I could learn. Although my child died 21 years ago, I was suprised to learn how much I had not dealt with. Still Life with Sierra is a story that teaches us it is never too late to begin your grief journey and to finally gain a sense of inner peace.

Back when Poke Rafferty first arrived in Bangkok to write a travel guide, some of the old-timers in the Expat Bar on Patpong Road helped him make sense of the city. Now these men—many of whom have been living in Southeast Asia since the Vietnam War—have grown old and, in some cases, frail. When a talkative stranger named Arthur Varney turns up, they accept him without suspicion, failing to see that he’s actually using them to get to Poke.Varney wants two things: money Poke doesn’t have and a person Poke is unwilling to hand over. It becomes apparent quite quickly that there’s nothing Varney won’t do to secure his goals. As his actions threaten the foundation of Poke’s life in Thailand, the aging men of the Expat Bar discover that they might still be a force to reckon with.

Highly entertaining." —Library Journal, Starred Review “A fantastic thriller that will please the most plot-hungry of this acclaimed series’ fans. It’s been a couple of minutes since Varney checked his watch—one of the thick, heavy steel ones that would probably still be ticking after the asteroid hit—and left, at about the same time he seems to leave every night, around ten. Rafferty checks his own watch, and from her station in front of the bourbon the barmaid, Toots, who has been pouring these men’s drinks since the late 1960s, says, “Why you not home? Kwan have baby, yes?”     Kwan is Rose’s Thai name, which, like Toots’s, has receded so far into the mists of time that it takes Poke a second to understand the question. “Not yet,” he says. “Six months more.”    With the air of someone forced to state the obvious, Toots curves her arms a few inches from her stomach and says, “Have in here.”    “Yes, right. We’re at the throwing-up stage.”    “Three month,” Toots says. She pokes the inside of her right cheek with her tongue, searching for something, and sucks at a tooth. “Should stop now.”    “She’ll throw up as long as she can,” Rafferty says. “She’s hanging on to every phase. This may be the world’s first two-year pregnancy.”    Toots shakes her head, and her hair, graying, permed into thick, Brillo-stiff curls—black when Rafferty met her—wobbles a tiny bit, like molded Jell-O. “So why you come here? Should be at your house. Taking care.”    “I’m hiding from the television,” Rafferty says. “She and Miaow have bought bootlegs of every DVD the BBC ever made about English people who live in big houses and hate each other. Downton Abbey, Upstairs Downstairs, The Forsyte Saga, Pride and Prejudice, practically the complete works of Anthony Trollope. Just one well-bred snub after another.”    “Yes?” Leon Hofstedler says, his eyebrows tied in a knot of puzzlement. “For what purpose? This is not what Thai girls watch. Thai girls, they want to see that . . . that doll with the knife—”    “Chucky.” Campeau accompanies the information with an apparently involuntary glance at the door, as though he’s afraid Arthur Varney will barge in from the street to contradict him.    “Not my Thai girls,” Rafferty says. “What they like is servants and people with titles and huge dinners with eight courses and gowns and big, clunky jewelry and feathered hats. And Colin Firth, can’t forget Colin Firth.”    “Be a great setting for the next Chucky,” the man who might be named Ron says. “Chucky Abbey.” He runs his fingers self-appreciatively through the silver waves of his hair, something he does often. The hair, Hofstedler said once to Poke, is all the man has left.    “Anything would be an improvement,” Rafferty says. “The people in these shows are asleep when they’re awake. They sneer at their own reflections. Rose is developing a British accent.”    “But yes,” Hofstedler says, nodding as he catches up to the conversation. “This is true. Rose is with child, and Miaow is in school. What year she is in now?”    “Eighth,” Rafferty says.    There’s a silence while these men, who have been on the edges of Rafferty’s life for more than seven years, consider the implications. Rafferty uses the time to look, without much nostalgia, around the room. It’s shaped like an ambitious bowling lane, no more than fourteen feet across and about fifty deep, its shape dictated by the fact that it was wedged by a voracious developer into what had been a sliver of space between two go-go bars, My Big Honey and Yellow Bellies, both long gone. One of them is still offering go-go, now under the name Miles of Smiles, while the other sells plastic leather goods to the easily fooled. The room is so narrow there’s barely room for the stained, battered bar with Toots behind it, plus the usual mirrored display of mislabeled whiskeys, the beer and soft-drink taps, a small sink, and a blender that’s used almost exclusively for the Growing Younger Man’s complicated smoothies, mostly uneasy mixes of alcohol and health-preserving algae. The place smells of old beer, neglected dentistry, and, thanks to the rain, wet wool.     Eight stools crowd the bar. Shoved against the opposite wall are four tiny tables that have been turned into booths by the addition of high-backed, plastic-covered, pumpkin-colored banquette seats of conspicuous cheapness. When Rafferty arrived in Bangkok, one of the booths was essentially reserved for a guy named Mac, the only openly gay member of the Expat Bar regulars, but Mac has been dead for three years now. Just as Rafferty thinks of Mac, whom he had liked, Bob Campeau puts into words the thought that was triggered in many of them by the information that Miaow is an eighth-grader.    Campeau says, “Goddamn, I’m old.” He carefully pats his baroque comb-over as Ron, if that’s his name, rakes his gleaming silver locks again and Hofstedler picks up a giant brandy snifter with a loose scattering of paper money in it and slides it down the bar with a grunt. He’s been putting on weight again, which, for someone with his medical history, is dangerous.    “Five hundred baht,” Hofstedler says. “Two-fifty for the swearword and two-fifty for talking about age.”    Campeau says, and it’s close to a snarl, “You were thinking the same thing I was. And ‘goddamn’ isn’t fucking swearing. There, now I said something you can fucking fine me for.” He pulls out some paper money and drops it into the snifter. It looks short even from where Rafferty’s sitting, but nobody calls Campeau on it. These men, who once considered themselves the kings of Bangkok, are running out of money.    “Eighth grade,” the Growing Younger Man says. He takes a drink of something that’s way too green for everyone else’s comfort. “Hard to believe.”    Rafferty hoists his own glass and drains the warm beer it contains, gone flat now. “I know. I still think of her as four feet tall with a part in her hair, and there she is, sitting at home watching Debrett’s Peerage on Ice and planning to be an actress.”    “That’s a rough life for a kid, acting,” the guy with the hair says, and the solemnity of his tone suggests that the thought has never before been put into words. “There’s a lot of rejection.”    “Yeah, well, we give her a lot of acceptance. In fact, she’s got a play coming up.”    “When?” This is Hofstedler, who actually sounds interested.    “I don’t know. What day is this?”    “Thursday?” the man who might be named Ron suggests.    No one disagrees, so Rafferty says, “A week from tomorrow. At her school. It plays Friday through Sunday.”    “This play is named what?” Hofstedler asks.    “It’s an old one. Small Town.”    “But I know this play,” Hofstedler says. “The girl dies at the end, yes? So sad.”    “Well, that’s who Miaow’s playing,” Rafferty says. “The girl who dies. Julie.”    “I seen it, too,” Campeau says. “A million years ago.”    “We should go,” Hofstedler says. “Show our support for Miaow.    An actress, she is. You must be very proud.”    “I’d go,” the Growing Younger Man says. The guy with the hair who might be named Ron emits a syllable of enthusiasm, and Campeau mutters something.    Hauling the denizens of the Expat Bar to Miaow’s play is not on Rafferty’s bucket list. He says, “We’ll talk about it next week, see who still wants to go,” and raps his knuckles on the bar. “Can I have a check, Toots? It’s about time for me to be allowed into the living room again.”    “Raining,” Campeau says without looking out the window.    Rafferty gets up, pulling baht out of his jeans. “I’ve been wet before, and I’m still here.”    The door opens, announced by a bell on a string, and Pinky Holland tentatively looks in, most of him remaining outside in case a retreat is in order. “Is he gone? Did I miss him?”    “Gone,” Hofstedler says, lifting his personal stein. “Toots, please? Another, yes?”    “What was the topic tonight?” Pinky says, coming the rest of the way in. He’s a small, narrow-shouldered, professionally tan man of seventy or so with deeply creased laugh lines and a smooth bald head that Rafferty suspects he polishes. “No, lemme guess. Was it voting out every American politician and electing—who were they?—hair dressers and street mimes? Or the great Tulip Mania? Or was it—”    “Something new,” Campeau said. “The equatorial trench, I think. Exploitation in the tropics.”    “Sounds like a pip,” Pinky says. “Has he said where he comes from yet?”    “One can only ask so many times,” Hofstedler says, watching Toots fill his stein. “Then it becomes rude, yes?”    “What’s rude,” Pinky says, mopping his shining head, “is not answering the question.”    “He’s got something to hide,” Campeau says grimly.    “Well, jeez,” Pinky says. “He’s in Bangkok.” To Rafferty he says, “So how do you like him?”    Poke says, “I’d like him better if he came with a remote. When he looked at that nine-pound watch, I saw something yellow, a tattoo, on his wrist. Anybody know what it is?”    “It’s that rattlesnake,” the Growing Younger Man says, “although I don’t know why it’s yellow. From the Gadsden flag?”    “Which flag?” Hofstedler asks. Hofstedler has an interest in flags that Rafferty privately classifies as Germanic.    “Gadsden. From just before the Revolutionary War. Bright yellow, the coiled rattler that said ‘Don’t tread on me.’”    “That’s making a comeback,” Rafferty says. “Lot of people on the American right are flashing it around, as though the liberals are coming after their country-club memberships and incandescent bulbs.”    “They are,” says Campeau, who hasn’t set foot in America in forty years.    Pinky Holland says over him, to Rafferty, “First time he was in here, he asked about you, you know.”    Rafferty regards Holland for a few seconds. “No,” he says. “In fact, I didn’t know.” He turns to Hofstedler, the Repository of All Knowledge in the Expat Bar.    “He didn’t,” Hofstedler says. “Pinky leaps to his conclusion yet again. About travel writers he was talking, asking who wrote best about Bangkok.”    “And who does?” Rafferty says.    Campeau says, “Christopher Moore.”    “Those aren’t travel books, they’re mysteries. Was that it? He asked, and that was the answer?”    “No,” the Growing Younger Man says. He pulls the straw from his drink and licks a formless clot of powdered bluegreen algae off its tip while everyone looks elsewhere. “We said, you know, about Chris Moore’s books, and then the guys named half a dozen other writers, and then someone thought of you.”    “No prophet is honored in his own land,” Rafferty says. “It didn’t occur to you, Leon—it didn’t occur to any of you—to mention this to me?”    “He has always been here when you were here, yes? So who could tell you about it?” Hofstedler pulls his stein back across the bar and studies the level of the beer, probably comparing it to ten or twelve thousand others. “And he did not exactly leap to his feet when your name was finally mentioned.”    Pinky says, “Toots, I’m going to stay where I am and drip for a minute. Can I get a double?”    “Jack Daniel’s or Crown Royal?” Toots says.    “Oh, come on,” Pinky says. “Everybody knows they’re all really Mekong.”    “Jack, then,” Toots says. “More cheaper.”    “You know,” Rafferty says, “I don’t remember anyone calling me by name in here during the past few days.”    Hofstedler takes a sip, looking like he expects to find an insect floating in the suds, and says, “But why would we? We know who you are.”    “But tonight your Arthur Varney called me a travel writer, which means he knows what my name is,” Poke says, pushing his stool back into position against the bar. “I think that’s kind of interesting.” He pulls a baseball cap out of his pocket and slaps it open on his jeans. “Would you drip a little to your left, Pinky? I’m on my way out.”    “Gonna get wet,” Pinky says, sidestepping.    “We have explained this to him,” Hofstedler says. “But he is young and foolish.”    “Gee, thanks, Leon.” Rafferty says, pulling the hat on. “I haven’t been feeling very young lately.”    “In here,” Hofstedler says, “you are a child. Ein Kind. This is the Cave of the Ancients.” He holds up a hand, as though in benediction. "Miaow's play. We all go, yes?"

Doesn’t much matter who they are.” That’s just one of the truths spoken in The Hot Countries, the latest and strongest of the Poke Rafferty novels. Poke’s friends -- people he might have identified as acquaintances rather than friends before this novel -- are the key to this novel’s success.Timothy Hallinan writes circles around a number of more popular thriller writers who are just phoning it in. I have never been disappointed by a Hallinan novel. Hallinan’s Junior Bender series is fun, but his Poke Rafferty series probes the human character in greater depth. In The Hot Countries, Hallinan focuses on aging collateral characters who no longer have a purpose in life and seem incapable of searching for one. Hallinan is a master at writing about people living in emotional pain, people in a state of decline, people who have lost themselves. Fortunately, he balances the darkness with humor and with glimpses of human decency.Arthur Varney shows up in Bangkok looking for Poke Rafferty. Varney wants something from Poke, maybe a couple of things, both relating to people and events found in The Fear Artist and For the Dead. Like all Poke Rafferty novels, however, The Hot Countries can easily be read as a stand-alone.One of the strongest characters in The Hot Countries (other than Poke) is an old veteran named Wallace who has been destroyed by love more than war. Seeing Varney takes Wallace into his tortured past, giving Hallinan a chance to tell the veteran’s story. A couple of other strong characters are children, particularly Treasure, a girl who has suffered a violent life, some of which was detailed in earlier novels. She’s a kid who is dedicated to survival, but during the course of the novel, circumstances cause Poke to wonder whether he has misjudged her.Hallinan has a gift for describing Bangkok, from the fat raindrops to the grim tourists and grizzled expats who choke its streets. He also has a strong grasp of Thai people and culture, of bar girls and the foreign customers who never bother to probe beneath the smiling fantasies that occupy a week or two of their lives. Hallinan’s prose is descriptive, fresh, and engaging, but it’s also honest. He describes Poke (a travel writer) as staring at his laptop “as he tried to find his way to a sentence he believed.” I love Hallinan’s novels because, unlike so many current crime writers, Hallinan always writes sentences I can believe.Astute observations of human nature combine with escalating tension in a novel that is alternately chilling and moving. The ending couldn’t be better. The Hot Countries is exactly what a thriller should be -- a novel about the triumph of the human spirit that features ordinary people in threatening situations who reveal their strengths and flaws as they strive to overcome adversity. It is the best novel I’ve read by Hallinan. He is now permanently enshrined as one of my favorite contemporary crime writers.

He’s one of the few who can make it better. Writing a successful series about an American expatriate living in Thailand? Start up an equally successful series about an LA burglar who serves as PI to the underworld. Still not enough? How about creating a trilogy within the world of the Thailand series? Done. The Hot Countries is the final installment of the three-book sequence begun by The Fear Artist and continuing through For the Dead. Each book places progressively more importance on Miaow, the Thai orphan adopted by Poke Rafferty and his wife, Rose. Miaow is entering adolescence and all the problems that can create for parent-child relationships, but it also now more than just a potential plot diversion or complication. She serves a vital purpose in helping Rafferty understand a cadre of homeless children, chief among them Treasure, a half-Thai, half-Caucasian child brutally raised by a former Operation Phoenix spook.Much of The Hot Countries takes place in or because of Rafferty’s associations at the Expat Bar, where farang of various nationalities get together to drink and commiserate. A newcomer has started to make appearances, and has asked about Rafferty, albeit obliquely. Time will show what this stranger is after are things not easily relinquished. At the risk of starting a genre argument, Hallinan has mastered the literary thriller. His plots are tight and the stories are perfectly paced. That’s enough for most writers, but Hallinan—again, not content to leave well enough alone—adds context to the characters and situation few would dare.At the outset, Rafferty would be hard pressed to call those at the Expat Bar his friends, with one exception. By the end he’s come to realize they’re more like a family, though none of them would be so maudlin as to say so. The onset of dementia is also a key element of the story, as well as the repair of Rafferty’s friendship with Arthit, a clean cop who can call on a small handful of those he trusts to work the law to their advantage, even if they have to stretch it a little. The relationship between Rafferty and Arhtit’s new wife is also stressed, and it was tenuous to start wife.None of these are afterthoughts, applied after the first draft to add depth. Everything that happens in the book happens for a reason. To change how quickly Rafferty and Anna come to better understand each other would create a butterfly effect that could change the entire outcome of the book. And it would still make sense. The Hot Countries is Hallinan’s seventh Rafferty book. The series shows no signs of wear or staleness. Each book explores the series’ universe in a little more detail, drawing from bits of predecessors while expanding horizons. Rare is the book that so affects me that I need to take time for reflection on what I just read when I finish it. Still more unusual is the book that had that affect and seems better when I sit done to write the review a couple of weeks later. This is one of those books. The rarest of the rare.

I had wondered how much trouble a travel writer could get himself into, so I enjoyed the fact that The Hot Countries picked up a previous plot line that had been left unfinished. wide open.I first discovered Mr. Hallinan with his Junior Bender series when his 2nd in the series hit the NY Times best seller list - and have devoured everything he's written ever since. I agree with previous reviewers that he writes circles around many other authors, and think that all of his series have wonderfully complicated, rich and realistic characters. With the Poke Rafferty series, I feel like I've been exposed to the complicated personalities from the start - and seems like a really is a character driven series. In his Junior Bender series I feel like we get to know the characters a little more slowly. Like in real life, they seem to show us what they want us to see and over time that we get to know their darker hidden selves. Even his earliest works, the Simeon Grist novels, the characters are big and colorful. Those books might be my favorite - they are explosive, colorful, gritty and move like modern day blockbuster movies. I'd love for Mr. Hallinan to bring Simeon back.

A chilling, suspenseful new thriller in the vein of Michael Crichton and James Rollins

It's all about the genetics. DNA. Black & white.

A decade ago the US government mandated that all citizens be issued biochips containing all of their medical information and an id number indicating a person's health. Then they made the information public—the implications of which were wide-spread and devastating.

Now on the eve of the 2032 presidential election, the country is deeply divided and on the brink of civil war. But as the two major political parties face off, innocent Americans are dying at the hands of masked terrorists. When the Liberty Party's presidential nominee is assassinated in a highly-coordinated, masterful attack, it sets off a chain of events that will change the course of history and leave America's inalienable rights—life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—dangling on the precipice of extinction.

Nation of Enemies: A Thriller, by H.A. Raynes

About the Author

H.A. Raynes was inspired to write Nation of Enemies by a family member who was a Titanic survivor and another who escaped Poland in World War II. Combining lessons from the past with a healthy fear of the modern landscape, this novel was born. A longtime member of Boston's writing community, H.A. Raynes has a history of trying anything once (acting, diving out of a plane, white water rafting, and parenting). Writing and raising children seem to have stuck.

That risk, of course, usually comes in the form of other people. Such is the case in the year 2032– modern day technologies and policies (electronic health records, “embryo profiling,” geolocation etc.) are taken to their extremes, and mixed with a hearty dose of a Brave New World-style caste system, leaving citizens' lives all but dictated by MedID numbers (conveniently implanted into their forearms). Oh, and also, it's an election year. So, as you might imagine, the surveillance state is in full swing. One of my favorite things about this book is that it's not a clear-cut case of good versus evil. The tension between liberty and security doesn't grow out of malice. Don't get me wrong, you've got some decidedly villainous players skulking around, but it's a world of tradeoffs— decisions have consequences, and there's a selfish side to everyone involved. That being said, certain individuals piqued my interest more than others.Taylor Hensley is a single mother, graffiti artist, and daughter of the Boston Brahmin-esque presidential candidate. Basically, it would be as though Shepard Fairey (of HOPE poster fame) was Mitt Romney's son. Plus, she skedaddles about rooftops using suction cups, which is just so badass. What separates this book from its catch-me-if-you-can kin is its tolerance for moral ambiguity. In a world of limited resources, wicked problems exist, and these problems have no definitive answers. At one point, a character reflects “How could we have brought another child into this world? What have we done?” And I found myself thinking, yeah— what were you thinking?!? The story ends, but it doesn't feel like the conversation's over—and I like that.

Sometimes that comfort comes as escapism from a fantasy story; sometimes it's relief from a horror story; or empathy and compassion from a love story. We take comfort in the pretend. It is what we need to balance out the reality of everyday living. But when a piece of fiction depicts such a plausible near future — and a dark, dystopian one at that — it is truly chilling. That’s what HA Raynes has done here. The sheer real-world plausibility of the plot of Nation of Enemies is what makes it riveting. And terrifying. It’s set in the near future but it is a thriller, not a science-fiction story. Even though the setting of N.O.E. is the run up to the Presidential election of 2032, everything about this story feels like it could feasibly happen 17 years from now. The MedID technology. The prevalence of fundamentalist cults. Abhorrent terrorist acts. The power of the healthcare industry. Abuses of digital privacy. Abuses of political power. If those injustices aren't already happening today...At the same time, the characters are still humans. Not just humans, but human. They are relatable with ample flaws to accompany their strengths. The future setting doesn’t break the chain of their relate-ability.It’s a quick engrossing read that ends up being a think piece about politics, privacy, family and fear and the role technology can (and will) play in all of these topics. Especially poignant in light of the 2016 elections.I breezed through it and am left wanting more. And soon.

A scary but possible future By Bookfan The plot had a steady pace, with a few twist and turns, things don't appear to be as you think they are and everything is not as black and white as it seems on the surface. The story describes a bleak future from a very US-centric perspective, where people's decisions whether right or wrong have far reaching consequences for their loved ones. I found the characters complex but not always as well developed as they could be. I sometimes found it difficult to connect with the characters. The book was otherwise well written. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys political thrillers with a psychological edge.Review copy provided via Reading Alley in exchange for an honest review.

Not only performance help also helpfull as general overview By Daniel Teubner What I like most about this book is that it is short and quickly to read. But it is full of helpfull informations regarding Zabbix perfomance AND the Zabbix structure in total. So no bla bla around the information. The booked helped me as an "experienced starter" with Zabbix to get a better picture what is in which relation to all the other components of the system. So it is worth not only if you have performance issues but also to get a good background on all the Zabbix components. The tips and things to considere are all clear and can be directly used even the author says that the exact tuning values depends on your structure. But you can copy them to your site and from the book you learn how to tweak them for you and how to monitor them. As my team mate is the Zabbix pro I trusted him a lot but after reading this book I found a lot of things we could have done better from the start. And chaning them now helped us to avoid some pitfalls. So even if the content seems to be for the Zabbix pros it will help us beginners also very good.

Must have for every Zabbix Administrator, approaches every aspect with good detail By Filipe Paternot It covers all must know topics and components:- Database- Zabbix server- Zabbix proxy- Items and triggers- Storage- Webserver- Php- Operating systemIt describes in higher details how every component interact with each other, how to estimate the size of your infrastructure, hardware for each piece, predict database and organic growth. How to construct and customize templates, why you should do it, how to monitor Zabbix health, and so on.If you already manage a big environment, you can get new ideas, consolidate others and find new ways to improve. If you don't, it will be of great help to get to know some best practices, learn to avoid some problems and/or how to deal with some that you still hit.I almost took one star off of it because of when the book approaches the DBSyncer parameter, it's not mentioned how it does behave in great detail. What the book misses, is that DBSyncer does so by locking HistoryCache by itemid, calculates trends. Sometimes it does generate a bottleneck and does not perform well enough. This is hard to monitor, but still very important. It's better described on https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBX-9201.Still a great book, though. With it, got few new insights, adopted the use of php accelerators and validated many other aspects of current implementation.

Most books about Zabbix will explain how you monitor environment with items, triggers and web scenarios and how you should do this. But this book will only talk about these things when it is related about performance. Why for example is ".last()" better for performance instead of using "avg()"?. Also your environment/hardware where Zabbix is installed is described in this book. The database is very important in your setup and a whole chapter on tuning is dedicated to this.I personally liked the chapters "Chapter 3: Tuning the Zabbix Server" and "Chapter 10: Monitoring the Health of Zabbix". Chapter 3 is about the triggers I mentioned earlier and buffers and caches. I never found some clear information about these caches and buffers and what they do. Chapter 10 is about the health of Zabbix itself and basically describes the "Template App Zabbix Server" (And Proxy) templates in Zabbix what they mention/do.The author mentioned why he only focused on performance tuning for MySQL, but it would be nice in next releases if there is an chapter about tuning the PostgreSQL database. I was lucky, but I know people who have PostgreSQL as database server who can skip an chapter in this book.I really liked reading this book and is written very nice. I will definitely recommend this book to other Zabbix administrators/users.
