The Confessions of Frances Godwin is the fictional memoir of a retired high school Latin teacher looking back on a life of trying to do her best amidst transgressions--starting with her affair with Paul, whom she later marries. Now that Paul is dead and she's retired, Frances Godwin thinks her story is over--but of course the rest of her life is full of surprises, including the truly shocking turn of events that occurs when she takes matters into her own hands after her daughter Stella's husband grows increasingly abusive. And though she is not a particularly pious person, in the aftermath of her actions, God begins speaking to her. Theirs is a deliciously antagonistic relationship that will compel both believers and nonbelievers alike.

From a small town in the Midwest to the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome, The Confessions of Frances Godwin touches on the great questions of human existence: Is there something "out there" that takes an interest in us? Or is the universe ultimately indifferent?

The Confessions of Frances Godwin, by Robert Hellenga

From Booklist *Starred Review* Art conservators, college professors, avocado wholesalers, an elephant who paints, blues musicians, snake-handlers, Latin teachers, truck drivers—novelist Robert Hellenga writes about all kinds of people. His books are very different, as that list of characters’ occupations suggests, but they are similar, too, with themes reoccurring like motifs in a fugue: Italy, the nature of beauty, love found and lost, and the rhythms of daily life, which are somehow sustaining both in their intimacy and in their very ordinariness. His latest novel and one of his best, The Confessions of Frances Godwin, incorporates all of these themes while telling a story very different from anything he has done before. Hellenga, who teaches English at Knox College in downstate Illinois, is one of those writers who inspire a special kind of devotion in their readers. When two Hellenga fans encounter one another and learn of their shared enthusiasm, something happens that’s not unlike members of a secret society exchanging funny handshakes. Inevitably, the conversation turns to Hellenga’s first novel, The Sixteen Pleasures (1994), about art conservator Margo Harrington, who reappears in Philosophy Made Simple (2006) and The Italian Lover (2007). In Sixteen Pleasures, Margo is a 29-year-old woman of limited experience who travels to Florence to help with the restoration of art treasures damaged in the great floods of 1966. Living in a convent, she stumbles upon a rare volume of erotica in the convent library and subsequently tumbles into an affair with an older and supremely sophisticated Italian man. The novel is a sumptuous and sensual love story, but it’s also, as Hellenga has described it, an “occupational story,” in that the most sensual passages in the book describe Margo’s detailed, loving work on the pieces of art she helps restore. Above all, though, the novel introduces Hellenga’s great theme of the melancholy transience of love. The lovers in Hellenga’s moving, profound novels do not live in a world of conventional happy endings. His romances often end in attenuated moments of both disappointment and tenderness, partings that have the feel not of failed relationships but of life moving on and working out as it must. The theme reappears in Snakewoman of Little Egypt (2010), about a young woman named Sunny, who grew up in a snake-handling church in Illinois’ Little Egypt area and who falls in love with an anthropology professor, Jackson, entranced by her stories of the Church of the Burning Bush with Signs Following. Jackson and Sunny dance between the “safe harbor” of their life together and “the wider sea of courage, risk, and adventure,” each teaching the other about the many forms of joie de vivre. Yes, it is a melancholy story, but it is also immensely satisfying and even uplifting in that unique way that only deeply felt life can provide. That same sense of deeply felt life pervades Hellenga’s new book. Frances Godwin is a retired high-school Latin teacher looking back at her life with her late husband, Paul, and musing over wrong turns taken and roads untraveled. With marriage and career behind her, she assumes that her life is winding down but quickly learns differently, as she comes to the aid of her daughter, trapped in an abusive marriage. What happens is shocking—the world of decisive action suddenly interrupting the quiet of a contemplative life—but it isn’t the action that drives the story but Frances’ attempts to make sense of it. She calls her story a “spiritual autobiography,” and despite being anything but pious, she engages in ongoing conversations with God, who turns out to be quite a wily fellow. Frances wants desperately to believe that “the universe itself cares,” but what if it doesn’t? That’s the question she grapples with in the most compelling of terms, never blandly abstract, always grounded in the particulars of the everyday. And it is in those particulars that Frances finally approaches some inevitably tentative answers, or what pass for answers in a world defined by change: “That’s the problem with autobiography,” she reflects. “You see a shape, you see ups and downs, conversions, turning points, reversals. But then you keep on living, . . . and every time you look down on your life, you see a different shape.” The beauty of this novel and, in fact, of all of Hellenga’s work, lies in the scrupulous attention he pays to those different shapes that life takes. Like Frances, we find in their very concreteness a way of living with the uncertainty that surrounds us. --Bill Ott

Review

“Hellenga's feisty and learned narrator, who travels from the Casa di Giulietta in Verona to TruckStopUSA in Ottawa, is an entertaining guide.” ―Publishers Weekly

“In this highly original novel exploring the hidden depths of one older woman, Hellenga (The Sixteen Pleasures) shows that he is a writer who deserves to be more widely known.” ―Library Journal

“Hellenga neatly balances the pallet trucks of the wholesale produce business with the idiosyncrasies of translating the ribald poetry of Catullus . . . Although the story ranges wide, The Confessions of Frances Godwin is firmly rooted in the culture and values of Hellenga's perfectly rendered Midwest.” ―Shelf Awareness

“Hellenga creates a teacher you will wish you had studied with, and a character to remember.” ―Saint Louis Post-Dispatch

“One heck of a plot . . . Hellenga, the famously philosophical novelist . . . is 'inclined,' he recently wrote on his blog, 'to accept the accumulated wisdom of the ancient near East' but . . . 'can't entirely abandon the quest for some larger meaning.' It is this quest for meaning that this latest book, like much of Hellenga's work, is all about.” ―Chicago Tribune

“His latest novel [is] one of his best . . . Hellenga . . . is one of those writers who inspire a special kind of devotion in their readers . . . The beauty of this novel and, in fact, of all of Hellenga's work, lies in the scrupulous attention he pays to those different shapes that life takes. Like Frances, we find in their very concreteness a way of living with the uncertainty that surrounds us.” ―Booklist

“Gripping and unpredictable . . . . The Confessions of Frances Godwin both sums up and surpasses Hellenga's body of work. This is a story of maturity by maturity for maturity, written with subtlety, deep learning, and wisdom.” ―The Washington Post

I know, caps and exclamation points - I sound like a teenage girl. But I'm a guy, and I'm more than fifty years past teenage. But Robert Hellenga's newest novel, THE CONFESSIONS OF FRANCES GODWIN, was just so damn good I couldn't believe it. Well, yes I could, because I've already read three other Hellenga novels over the past fifteen years or so - The Sixteen Pleasures: A Novel, Blues Lessons: A Novel, and Snakewoman of Little Egypt: A Novel - and they were all great. But CONFESSIONS may well be Hellenga's best book yet. I think this one is truly a labor of love. The story is set in Galesburg, home of Knox College, where Hellenga taught English for decades and is now a Professor Emeritus and writer-in-residence. The town, lovingly mapped and described, is so important to the story that it practically becomes a character. The title character grew up on a farm nearby and attended Knox College, where she met her husband, Paul Godwin, her Shakespeare teacher (married to someone else at the time).Galesburg, Milwaukee, Rome, Verona. All important places to Frances Godwin. Parts of her life both with Paul and later with her troubled daughter Stella and by herself. Faith, art, music, life itself. All the big questions are in here, and maybe some answers too. I'm not going to do any plot summaries here. The thing I kept wondering as I was reading was whether Hellenga was intentionally writing a kind of modern version of St Augustine's Confessions (Penguin Classics).Because narrator Frances calls her story a "spiritual autobiography." A lapsed Catholic, she is fluent in Latin, a dead language, but also the language Augustine wrote in. She has her regrets about things she has done in her life, things recounted in stark and vivid detail, and is constantly toying with the idea of confessing her great sins, and moving "out of the shadows into the light." She has frank conversations with God, a God who seems oddly human and keeps urging her to confess. On one of her trips to Italy she is even carrying a copy of Augustine's CONFESSIONS.I know a little about St. Augustine, but have to confess I have never read his books. So I am a bit over my head in trying to make a comparison. In the contest of wills between Frances and God, does God win? (Sorry, but I couldn't resist that.) That's something each reader will have to decide. The thing is, this narrative is just so rich with sidebars and details about so many things - all fascinating - that I just did not want it to end. But it does, and when I read that last paragraph, that final line, it gave me goose bumps. It was so perfect, positively perfect. One more comparison kept popping up as I was reading Hellenga's CONFESSIONS. I kept remembering Agatha McGee, a fictional spinster teacher, the creation of the late Minnesota writer, Jon Hassler, who first appeared in his 1976 novel, Staggerford: A Novel, and then in several subsequent novels. Like Frances, she was Catholic, but a pragmatic and practical one, who also had her doubts at times.St Augustine or Jon Hassler? Yeah, there are parallels and comparisons, but Hellenga's Frances Godwin is one of a kind, a kind you don't often see in contemporary fiction. I am selfishly hoping that Hellenga might follow Hassler's lead and bring Frances back again in another novel. She's that fascinating a character. Did I say I LOVED this book? Oh yeah, I guess I did. Terrific book! VERY highly recommended.- Tim Bazzett, author of the memoir, BOOKLOVER

I remember, when I read Marilynne Robinson's GILEAD, feeling immediately that I was in the presence of a great author. With Hellenga's novel, (and this is my first by him), I was instantly engaged, but it wasn't until the halfway point that I realized how stunning this book was, and consequential.Frances lives with ongoing doubt regarding her faith. She's from a strait-laced Polish Catholic family in small-town Illinois, her mother especially traditional. But Frances sought to be a scholar, which creates a more expansive intellect--and with that comes dubiety. In the 60's,when she has an affair with her college Shakespeare professor, Paul, she tries to shake him off before her two-month trip to Rome to study spoken Latin. Later, she marries him, but not until after their daughter, Stella, was born (Paul had to get a divorce first). That's two transgressions right there! The first-person narrative is intimate and palpable, as if Frances is talking directly to you. It is laid out like a confessional memoir, which she calls a spiritual autobiography."All narrators are first-person narrators. You can't get ironic distance from yourself, can't see around yourself, can't know more than you know."As the confessions progress, the tension rises. The erudition isn't distracting--rather, the allusions piqued my interest, while adding texture and depth to the story. Everything from Latin, the Classics, Shakespeare, opera, classical music, and piano tuning is folded in neatly and compellingly. The events that cause colossal self-doubt, guilt about her last months with Paul, guilt about not having guilt, and concern for Stella adds piercing poignancy. Her combative conversations with God--which, in my estimation, are to be taken figuratively--buttress the weight of the novel while giving it levity. An added bonus for me is the inclusion of Santa Maria Trastevere, a baroque church in Rome that is probably my most treasured edifice anywhere. When I visited this astonishing basilica, it poetically/spiritually brought me to my knees (and I am a secular Jew)! Hellenga's incorporation of the church in the story stole my heart. Finally, the most provocative theme of this book, to me, was the idea that "answers" aren't necessarily the element you are looking for. Rather, it is the questions. Asking the germane questions."I was being tested, too, though I wasn't sure exactly what the questions were."Addendum: you can't leave links in a review, so under the comments section I am supplying a link to Google images of the breathtaking Santa Maria Trastevere basilica.

By Tom Field Robert Hellenga's The Confessions of Frances Godwin (Bloomsbury; 2014) has its moments—like the trays of hors d'oeuvres at the country club. You like all the offerings well enough, but then there's that one item of which you're especially fond. When I saw the plot synopsis on the jacket, I knew I had to pick this novel up. Latin teacher goes rogue! Breaking Bad, NPR style! Who could refuse that story? Our author's hor d'oeuvres were worth the tasting. But some of the technicalities seemed a bit show-off-ish... as if we needed to be convinced how smart he (make that, she) is in the classic languages, music theory, astronomy, religion. Don't get me wrong, I cherish such discussion; I can't get enough of philosophical exploration and deep matters of the human experience. But other than being well-versed, I craved a little more sense of setting, description of character, illustration of the moment at hand. What you expect from a novel. Not to be too sexist here, but frankly, Frances seemed more like a Frank to me, in how she spoke, thought, acted and reacted—but perhaps I discriminate too much, based on my preconceived differences between men and women in my personal observations.I still recommend listening to Frances' confessions. The Latin phrase above translates to "ready for a drink?" and that's how this story is best enjoyed. Read it at night, with a glass of wine, classical music on NPR playing low in the background.— Tom Field

Good also for VCAP and VCDX preparations By Andrea Good also for VCAP and VCDX preparationsThis is a short book (only 176 pages), but with a good approach for design an IT environment, particularly a VMware vSphere based. It can be really useful also for VCAP-DCD or VCDX preparations, in order to understand same methods and principles in projects design. The organization is almost simple and linear:• Chapter 1, Essentials of VMware vSphere, gives readers an in-depth knowledge of VMware vSphere products' benefits and architecture, and the appropriate methods, principles, and processes that the reader will apply to design VMware vSphere on infrastructures. This is a must if you have trouble with VCAP-DCD exam, where some concepts are not so easy and natural (unless you have practice with ITIL or similar frameworks).• Chapter 2, Designing VMware ESXi Host, Cluster, and vCenter, covers the methods for designing an ESXi Hypervisor and its inner components. This chapter also covers methods for designing for the upgradation and migration of ESX, clusters and vCenter, and highly elastic infrastructures. This is the most outdated part (still on vSphere 5.x).• Chapter 3, Designing VMware vSphere Networking, covers the the methods for analyzing the given requirements and mapping them to network possibilities. This part provide a simple but good overview also on virtual networking (but does not include any NSX or SDN parts).• Chapter 4, Designing VMware vSphere Storage, covers the methods for analyzing the given requirements and mapping them to storage possibilities, and the designing blueprints for storage infrastructure. Interesting part, but still little outdated, considering that does not cover at all VSAN or hyper-converged solutions.• Chapter 5, Designing VMware vRealize, covers the methods for analyzing the given requirements and mapping them to vCloud as well as forming design blueprints for the vCloud infrastructure. Interesting part, but too short and too generic.• Appendix, About VMware vSphere 6.0, covers the new features introduced into VMware vSphere 6.0. It also covers the enhancements brought into VMware vSphere 6.0. Too short and useless. Was better integrate it in the main structure. In my opinion the 2.0 version could be really great if it will be more focused on the current product version, the recommended practices and the actually proposition and technologies.

Good design guide, uses vSphere 5.5 By Chris Williams Given the timing of the release of this book, it's good to state at the beginning of the review that this book is a design guide that works with vSphere 5.5 design scenarios, and not vSphere 6.0.That aside (and based upon the fact that good design is vendor/tech agnostic) this is a good supporting documentation book if you are looking to increase your knowledge of design or are pursuing your VCAP-DCD or VCDX certifications.I stress, this book is supplemental. You will still need to review written design docs, but this book will give you the underpinning rational behind the decisions. Design docs will explain the "what", this book will explain the "why".

These are great and original poems, presided over by Bishop and Frost, but by a poet their peer in self-understanding. Okrent proves what I've long suspected: that no one should be permitted to publish poetry before one is..fifty.

Katherine moves into the big city to stay with her sister, her boyfriend and his MMA fighting buddy. The shared a kiss that been on her mind for months and now she has to live with him and try to fight off the desire she has for him that she doesn't need. This is a very short read. I think I need to read her first series Torn to get some of the questions about Katherine's past answered, otherwise hope they're answered in future books. There's a lot of character development in regard to Katherine but not much in regards to Rob at this point, just enough to get emotionally invested. This first book is entirely from Katherine's POV.

Keisha diesn't take s*** off of anybody! Cedric deserved what he got and some. I can't stand perverted people! I also can't stand mothers who take their man's word at face value instead of their daughters'! There has to be a second part so I can see how Keisha gets her and Taylor out of the mess she got them into. Thank you Dale for sharing your work with me and keep the books coming!

There is plenty of craziness to go around. Poor Taylor is battling herself with her split personality. One is trying to overtake the other. Along with this throw in a mama who speaks her mind. I won't tell the story, but I will say that this is a must read. I promise you that you won't be disappointed.

She was one crazy woman. I can't believe she killed that girl. Henry was crazy too but I loved Shaun's mother she didn't sugarcoat anything. I hope there is a part 2!! If you haven't 1- clicked this hot story your missing out. Excellent job Dale!!

A tense, penetrating novel, The Dead Student follows a young man set on avenging his uncle, no matter the consequences.Timothy Warner, a PhD student who goes by the nickname “Moth,” wakes up on his ninety-ninth day of sobriety with an intense craving for drink. He asks his uncle Ed, a former alcoholic and now successful psychiatrist, to meet him at an AA meeting later that day. When Ed doesn't show up, Moth bikes to his office and discovers a grisly scene—his uncle lying in a pool of blood, shot through the temple. The police pronounce the death a suicide, but Moth refuses to believe that his uncle would take his own life. Devastated and confused, he calls on the only person he thinks he can trust: Andrea Martine, an ex-girlfriend he has not spoken to in years. Each battling their inner demons, Moth and Andy travel into dark, unfamiliar territory, intent on finding out the truth about Ed’s death and circling ever closer to a devious mind that will flinch at nothing to achieve his own goal of revenge.

Twisted Tale By Novel Destination~Used Book Emporium I have enjoyed novels written by John Katzenbach in the past and felt fortunate to win this title in a GoodReads giveaway from Grove Atlantic (which did not affect my review). I will admit that "The Dead Student" is not the author's best book so far but it IS a compelling read. I had trouble caring about the characters initially and really disliked Mr. Katzenbach's use of the two younger heroes' adolescent nicknames. I know that the author explained the rationale for using "Moth" and "Andy Candy" but not calling them Timothy and Andrea (perhaps just Andy) made me feel like they were being dismissed/diminished...causing me to wonder why I cared about them enough to read the book. However, the author's writing style is good and the premise was great enough to make me keeping turning the pages.I really liked the premise of an unknown killer who has meticulously taken his revenge over a 30 year span. I was pleased that the main characters all get a believable voice in the story without a lot of repetition of events. Using some characters struggling with addiction in a way that did not portray them as pathetic and pointed out that clean and sober is a daily choice that takes work and support was a great touch. I appreciated the psychological suspense and many twists along the way...I could not predict the end nor could I close the book during the final 100 pages or so.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A chilling tale of long-simmering revenge By Bookreporter John Katzenbach always surprises and never disappoints. His novels often are placed in the subgenre of psychological thrillers, but he demonstrates with each new release how deep that vein is and can be. THE DEAD STUDENT, his latest work, demonstrates why he has a place on many “must-read author” lists as he sets up a chilling tale of long-simmering revenge.Do yourself a favor and give the book some time. Katzenbach is in no hurry to set the hook into the reader, though he does surely prick the skin from the first page. The protagonist is an interesting character but not necessarily a charismatic one. His name is Timothy “Moth” Warner, and he is pursuing a PhD in History, with alcoholism an ever-present burden. Moth’s beloved Uncle Ed is a highly respected psychiatrist who is similarly afflicted and has been showing him how the work of battling addiction is done through a regular AA meeting at a church nicknamed “Redeemer One,” which provides an oasis of quiet in the madness of Miami Beach. When Ed fails to attend a meeting one evening, Moth goes to Ed’s office, only to find him dead from an apparent suicide, with gun and note in evidence. The death is quickly labeled as such by Susan Terry, an assistant D.A. with Miami-Dade County who herself is an addict and attends the same meeting as does/did Moth and Ed. Moth, however, is utterly convinced that his uncle did not kill himself. Even as similar doubts quietly and separately arise in Susan, Moth enlists the help of the one person who he truly believes can help him: Andrea Martine --- “Andy Candy” --- who was his high school sweetheart. As fate would have it, Andy is going through some tragedy and heartbreak of her own, and the call for help from Moth serves as at least a partial distraction from her own turmoil even as it serves as a not-always pleasant reminder of her past with Moth.Andy, it develops, is a good choice for a helper, providing an offbeat but canny investigative sense. And as the reader learns early on, Moth is entirely correct. His uncle was the target of an enigmatic and very dangerous character who thinks of himself as “Student #5” and had been nursing a grudge against Ed and some others for decades. He so cleverly has been eliminating the objects of his wrath --- separated by time, distance and method --- that no one has detected a pattern until now.Moth’s persistent obsession has put him, Andy and eventually Susan on Student #5’s trail. Student #5 may be psychotic, but he is brilliant, and the trio who are doggedly pursuing him have no idea who and what they are dealing with. As outclassed as they are, Moth, Andy and Susan are not without their own talents and devices. The climax of the book explodes in a series of plans that go well and otherwise, ending with, perhaps, an all-but-invisible yet brilliant nod and wink to Agatha Christie. Or maybe I’m imagining that. Regardless, it’s a great ending that sounds the subtle ring of truth.Katzenbach toys just a bit with the classic definitions of good and evil. Student #5 is dangerous, no doubt about it. However, he performs a couple of small and simple but very important acts of kindness for two strangers. In contrast, late in the book, he utilizes a downtrodden individual to a markedly nefarious end. If Moth is not an especially interesting protagonist, he is more than balanced out by Student #5, who will keep you awake at night wondering if there is anyone from your past who is waiting and watching and biding their time to even the scales.Katzenbach’s plot-driven narrative is such that you will want to read THE DEAD STUDENT in one sitting. The length of the book may make doing that unlikely, but surely you will try.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub

Cold and Compelling Suspense By Mallory Heart Reviews REVIEW: THE DEAD STUDENT by John KatzenbachA compelling and truly deeply convoluted novel of psychological suspense, terror, addiction and recovery, psychosis, revenge, and murder. Yes, this novel contains all that, and rivets the reader. Commencing with the apparent suicide of noted middle-aged Miami psychiatrist, the storyline proves to be not only contemporary, but three decades in the making; with a cold, clever, planning killer who is not the garden-variety psychopath.I reviewed a digital ARC generously provided by the author and publisher via NetGalley and Edelweiss.

The first chapter is full of information that can help plan your trip. It's great for first time travelers to Italy as well as travelers have been there. Lots of useful information. Their itinerary is efficient for one week trip, definitely I will consider their pick of cities. I like the narrative style, easy to read, and it's not heavy to carry around. It talks about where not to go and their personal experiences. Highly recommended!

Comaskey Travel and tourism is the world’s largest industry which may explain why too many book publishers think their readers want 600 page tomes on travel. Just not so. Here’s a concise book that gives you what you need to experience Italy. There’s a very old saying, “See Rome and die” and its cousin "Vedi Napoli e poi muori!” credited to both Goethe and to the good people of Napoli. Kiki and Paul will have you saying. “See Italy and live.”

This book contains proven and effective strategies on how to improve your reading speed and overall comprehension. Revealed within are secrets that will supercharge your reading speed and make you a speed-reading demon.

NOT MUCH INSIGHT By WAD The book is actually too succinct; therefore not inputting much on how to actually develop the skills needed to effectively speed read and with comprehension. The information is too general. There is very little information to assist one in developing good speed reading techniques. I didn't learn much, if any at all; since I have read other author's materials that are definitely more informative and beneficial. The book actually has just about the same information as the other books introduced in the book subsequent to the speed reading chapters.

Read faster and with better comprehension and retention By Kitty Smith I've always been a super fast reader anyway, but sometimes my retention isn't the greatest because I'm just skimming the book. I thought this might help me improve my speed while help me retain more of what I've read, and on that score it delivers. It talks about stuff I hadn't considered, like common hindrances to effective speed reading, and sub vocalization which I am guilty of but had no idea it could actually affect my reading. The advice offered is clear and concise and easy to implement. Lots of useful information packed into this short guide!

I started implementing them right away and the book gave step by step instructions on how to use each concept.I doubled my reading speed the first day while keeping my comprehension around the same. Looking forward to seeing what I can max out at over time. The book was laid out well, and was written in a way that allowed the reader to understand and use the ideas easily. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

We acknowledge the importance of, and reverence for the Constitution of the United States of America but black people were not citizens at the time of its inception. American legislative bodies have fought over the issue for two hundred years without bestowing the full citizenship upon its black population. The conversations in this book are abrasive, caustic and intentional. We want to get the attention of our brethren who have been asleep for decades. Time to wake up!

Arm yourself against my dawn, which may at any moment cast you and Harry into obscurity, Alice James writes her brother William in 1891. In Judith Hooper’s magnificent novel, zingers such as this fly back and forth between the endlessly articulate and letter-writing Jameses, all of whom are geniuses at gossiping. And the James family did, in fact, know everyone intellectually important on both sides of the Atlantic, but by the time we meet her in 1889, Alice has been sidelined and is lying in bed in Leamington, England, after taking London by storm. We don’t know what’s wrong with Alice. No one does, though her brothers have inventive theories, and the best of medical science offers no help. So, with Alice in bed, we travel to London and Paris, where the James children spent part of their unusual childhood. We sit with her around the James family’s dinner table, as she – the youngest and the only girl – listens to the intellectual elite of Boston, missing nothing. The book is accompanied by Hooper’s Afterword,“What was Wrong with Alice?,” an analysis of the varied psychological ills of the James family and Alice’s own medical history.

Alice in Bed: A Novel, by Judith Hooper

Review "the true power of this novel is the exquisite language—both in the James’ reproduced letters, and in Hooper’s own impressive, shadow-quill renderings."—Publishers Weekly"In her debut novel, Alice in Bed, Judith Hooper offers an evocative and boldly intimate portrait of Alice James that is rich in detail and inspiring in its heroism.  She presents the reader with an Alice who, far from being a invalid, is a forceful and courageous artist in her own right, and who deserves her place as a full-fledged member of the famous literary clan. Even if you have never read a word of Gilded Age literature, you will not want to put this book down."—David R. Gillham, author of City of Women"In a work of breathtaking imagination, Hooper goes beyond the singular diarist who was Alice James and gives us the person -- audaciously curious, unapologetically original, and clearly the equal of her two more illustrious brothers, Henry and William. The James clan was known for quirkiness, even in Boston, but their sibling bond is here revealed as tender, enduring, and full of a private mirth. An extraordinary accomplishment, a captivating read."—Thad Carhart, author of The Piano Shop on the Left Bank

About the Author Judith Hooper was an editor at Esquire Magazine, and is the author of Of Moths and Men and co-author of The Three-Pound Universe. She lives in western Massachusetts.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The streets of Boston and Cambridge are running through my head again, and it is as effortless as dreaming. From 13 Ashburton Place, on Beacon Hill--where our family moved when I was fifteen--my feet lead me down steep cobblestone streets, polished by last night’s rain, the gold dome of the state house hovering behind and above me like a plump, gaudy moon. I pass hitching posts and dray carts, hear the clop-clop of hooves on cobblestone, the knife man chanting Kni-ves sharpened. I can slow it down and make out individual blades of grass, a chink in a stone wall, a button missing from the dress of an elderly lady on a park bench, the flies settling on the face of the horse pulling the milkman’s wagon. Perhaps in the absence of an outer life, the inner life shines brighter. My brother William ought to study this in his psychology. With a throng of people I huddle at the intersection of Charles Street and Beacon to wait for the horse-cars. When they arrive, bells tinkling, I mount the steps behind a lady wearing a ghastly confection of maribou feathers and satin rosettes on her head and breathe in the familiar odor of dirty straw and old clothes, mingled with breezes from the river. If it is winter I look out upon a river glazed with ice, bluish in late afternoon; if it is summer I count the white sails of sailboats. In Cambridge I dismount at dusty Harvard Square, shaded by its great elm, with four roads radiating out to Boston, Watertown, Arlington, and Charlestown, like choices laid out in a fairytale.

The inner life of a fascinating woman surrounded by a dazzling family By Lauren L I bought the book because I'm fascinated by the entire James clan including their retiring sister, Alice. I found it vastly entertaining, well researched and totally credible. I've proposed it to my book club and it is our November selection; I am looking forward to a lively discussion of Alice's imagined voice, her place in her family and her mysterious disease.

Carpenter With Alice in Bed, Hooper takes on a topic I was somewhat familiar with, the life of Henry James's sister Alice, from books like the Master, by Colm Toibin. Because The Master's subject, Henry James, was stolid and repressed, that is when he wasn't turning out literary masterpieces, I was thrilled to find Alice full of rebellious verve and sensuous delight. In fact I especially commend Hooper on her titillating and engrossing sex scenes. The reader likes Alice and roots for her when the odds of her historical and familial time and place are weighted heavily against her productivity and enjoyment of life. Even the stuffy, patrician New Englanders, usually not my favorite characters, emerge as intriguing and sometimes surprising individuals. And every page is alive with beautiful prose, descriptions of places I've known, in France and elsewhere, drawn in ways I never experienced them, making this book a page-turner that is both rich and rewarding.

Covers all the bases for a great read By Diana Murphy Alice in Bed is an exquisite, humor filled, deeply moving portrayal of Alice James, younger sister of famous William and Henry, and her peculiar genius and triumph against all odds. Restricted by late 19th cent. standards for women, her own family dynamic, and numerous bizarre physical ailments, Alice finds a unique and heroic way of living her life with wit and wisdom. Judith Hooper is a master of dialogue offering highbrow entertainment and rare insight into the lives, minds, and interactions of the Jameses. Her research is impeccable and craftsmanship topnotch. This debut novel is an immensely enjoyable and inspirational read.Diana Murphy

Parallel Computing for Data Science: With Examples in R, C++ and CUDA is one of the first parallel computing books to concentrate exclusively on parallel data structures, algorithms, software tools, and applications in data science. It includes examples not only from the classic "n observations, p variables" matrix format but also from time series, network graph models, and numerous other structures common in data science. The examples illustrate the range of issues encountered in parallel programming.

With the main focus on computation, the book shows how to compute on three types of platforms: multicore systems, clusters, and graphics processing units (GPUs). It also discusses software packages that span more than one type of hardware and can be used from more than one type of programming language. Readers will find that the foundation established in this book will generalize well to other languages, such as Python and Julia.

Review

"From my reading of the book, Matloff achieves his goals, and in doing so he has provided a volume that will be immensely useful to a very wide audience. I can see it being used as a reference by data analysts, statisticians, engineers, econometricians, biometricians, etc. This would apply to both established researchers and graduate students. This book provides exactly the sort of information that this audience is looking for, and it is presented in a very accessible and friendly manner."―Econometrics Beat: Dave Giles’ Blog, July 2015

"The author has correctly recognized that there is a pressing need for a thorough, but readable guide to parallel computing―one that can be used by researchers and students in a wide range of disciplines. In my view, this book will meet that need. … For me and colleagues in my field, I would see this as a ‘must-have’ reference book―one that would be well thumbed!"―David E. Giles, University of Victoria

"This is a book that I will use, both as a reference and for instruction. The examples are poignant and the presentation moves the reader directly from concept to working code."―Michael Kane, Yale University

The basic idea of the book is good and such a book is very timely By William Venables The basic idea of the book is good and such a book is very timely. Matloff delivers with clarity and authority, which is good. The book suffers a lot, however, by the lack of a good professional edit. The leading example, though useful in containing many the features you would need as an illustrative example is, frankly, rather pedestrian and why anyone would want to do such a calculation is left unmotivated. The code listings in the book, of which there are a great number of course, are presented in a variable pitch roman font making them not only unattractive, but difficult to read quickly. It's very jarring. Worse still, though, is the large number of typos and other infelicities that mean you have to check constantly as you read. The book shows every sign of being published in a great rush, and it almost looks like the author is leaning on his readers to do the final edit! The book also has no Bibliography and the only inline references I could find were to the author's own previous book on The Art of R Programming.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Rush job in editing still provides very valuable information. By Alexander Whitworth Let me preface by saying that I consider Matloff's "The Art of R Programming" to be the best book on R available. So, I had very high hopes for this book. However, this book falls far short of the quality of Matloff's book on R.In general, I greatly agree with Venables prior review on editing and typesetting. It appears that the printing was done in the basic font used in LaTeX documents made in RStudio or a basic LaTeX editor. In my mind, Matloff was done a huge disservice by CRC Press by not doing a professional edit and making appropriate typesetting decisions.Moving to the book's content, I found the information very informative and useful. In particular Chapters 2 - 6 were great. That said, given how much of this information is freely available online, it's hard to justify a purchase. In addition, this edition has changed very little from the rough draft that is freely available on Dr Matloff's website. Given the poor quality edit and the lack of new / revised material vs the free draft version, I have a hard time recommending this as a purchase, though I do consider it a valuable reference. Yes, I realize that that is seemingly contradictory.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. especially since there are so many good parallel materials out there for free By Amazon Customer Not worth the money, especially since there are so many good parallel materials out there for free. The book felt rushed too, like it wasn't proofread enough times or something.
