"This is a book that should be OPEN on every meeting planner's or event marketer's desk, and used every day."--Paul Salinger, VP of Marketing, Oracle

In his bestselling book Conferences That Work: Creating Events That People Love Adrian Segar taught readers how to design and execute remarkable conferences. But this book focuses on improving meetings at a finer level--the individual meeting sessions.

Today, the most common reason that people give for attending face-to-face meetings is making valuable connections. Yet, time and time again, "networking" is relegated to meals and socials outside the sessions, and events are filled with lectures followed by a few minutes of audience questions. The Power of Participation provides conference presenters, organizers, and marketers with a comprehensive toolkit of simple techniques for creating participative sessions that involve the audience in their learning. Adrian Segar shows how you can turn passive attendees into active participants, which boosts learning, adds opportunities to meet and learn with peers during sessions, builds community and engagement, and improves desired action outcomes at your events.

Smart presenters and meeting organizers are integrating experiential learning and peer connection into their events. This book tells you how to do it. Buy The Power of Participation to learn why it's so important to incorporate participant action into every aspect of your event, what you need to know to create a meeting environment that supports and encourages participation, and when and how to use this extensive compendium of specific, detailed techniques to radically improve your sessions and meetings.

The Power of Participation: Creating Conferences That Deliver Learning, Connection, Engagement, and Action, by Adrian Segar

Review "The Power of Participation is a must for anyone who needs guidance in modernizing meetings. We are moving into a new stage of post industrial meetings where all participants are valued, not only those behind the microphone. Well designed participation is key, and Adrian Segar shows us the way. Buy it, read it and do it!" --Eric de Groot, Meeting Designer, and co-author of Into the Heart of Meetings

"Adrian Segar's work is crucial for the evolution of the event industry. This book is a mandatory read for the modern event professional. Adrian shares a logical approach to changing our outdated event designs, and guides you with practical techniques towards a value centered model, where the clear winners are both the conference organizer and the attendee. The Power of Participation provides the first step towards achieving conference success." --Julius Solaris, Editor EventManagerBlog.com, and author of The Event App Bible, Social Media for Events, and The Good Event Registration Guide

"Too many conferences are top-down, over-caffeinated, information dumps. Adrian Segar has figured out a different model: a participatory, community-driven event that yields benefits that last far beyond the conference itself. If you want to make a lasting difference with your group today, you owe it to yourself to read this book." --Dr. Nick Morgan, President of Public Words and author of Power Cues

"A must read handbook of the what, why, and how to move passive conference consumer-based attendees to active engaged participants." --Jeff Hurt, EVP, Velvet Chainsaw Consulting

"We have to start meeting like this! A treasury of proven techniques, clearly written, based on first-person experience and deep insights." --Bernie DeKoven, Author of The Well Played Game, game designer, and fun theorist at deepfun.com --Editorial Reviews"Adrian wants to transform attendees into participants. And in this book, he shows you how to do it. As an organizer of professional conferences for the past decade, I wish I had come across Adrian's books earlier in my life. It would have made me more confident and competent." --Sivasailam (Thiagi) Thiagarajan, Founder and Resident Mad Scientist, the Thiagi Group

"Love The Power of Participation! It's a fabulous compilation of techniques to bring more interaction to your conferences. I'll be keeping this reference book handy whenever I design a meeting for a client." --Kristin J. Arnold, CPF, CSP, Founder of Quality Process Consultants, and past president of the National Speakers Association

"Enough with mind-numbing, snooze-generating conferences! Participation-driven conferences involve, engage, and energize participants, resulting in longer-lasting learning and more meaningful connections. With The Power of Participation as your guide, you can confidently plan, design and run participant-driven events. And what a powerhouse of information you'll find in the compendium of participation techniques. No one should plan a conference without this book!" --Naomi Karten, author of Managing Expectations and other books

"When the Spanish conquistadores first came to what is now New Mexico, they brought only a small variety of European woodworking tools. Native woodmakers had no drills or lathes, so they developed styles of furniture that displayed neither round holes nor turnings. Today, of course, New Mexico woodworkers may choose from a catalog containing hundreds of tools, so their furniture styles are much more varied.

Adrian Segar's The Power of Participation is like a catalog of tools--not for designing furniture, but for designing meetings. If you know only a more limited collection of meeting tools, your meetings will have a "style" that lacks the variety needed to deliver "learning, connection, engagement, and action." No wonder your people will say they hate meetings.

If you want to improve your meetings, keep a copy of Adrian's "catalog" right there on your desk, always ready for instant access. Better yet, study the tools in his catalog so they're right there in your brain, always ready to build first-class meetings that everyone loves." --Gerald M. Weinberg, The Consultants' Consultant, author of over 40 books, including classics The Psychology of Computer Programming and An Introduction to General Systems Thinking --More Editorial Reviews

You'll Never Try (or Want to) Experience a Traditional Event Again with This Far Superior Model By Joel Zaslofsky Let me start by saying this book completely transformed the way I organize, host, and participate in events. It's darn near impossible to go back to the traditional, uninspired, and ultimately counter-productive event format after finding Adrian Segar's far superior Conferences That Work and The Power of Participation models. What's so great about this book and its philosophy? Well … once you get past the great historical context about how meetings/events got to be the mess they are, it's pure practical gold.I love how Segar puts all the activities into the context of a conference arc – openers, middle, and closers – and breaks down when you'll benefit most from a certain exercise, participant minimums or maximums before they become ineffective, and ready-to-use scripts that explain the exercises to a participant. From guidance on timekeeping, providing explicit ground rules (a.k.a. your "covenant") for participants, how to facilitate and ask great questions, and more, this book really covers an amazing amount of ground.I put the framework and some of the activities to the test in a recent two-day SimpleREV event that I co-organized and co-hosted. My participants loved – *loved* – the opening Roundtable and the closing Personal Introspective. Our real-time feedback and event survey confirmed what we thought we were gambling on (but was really a sure thing): people felt more connected, better supported, and had outright more fun with The Power of Participation-sourced action.Whether you're running a small corporate meeting or a large international conference, you'll enjoy the planning and hosting better – and your attendees will be happily pushed outside their comfort zone – with the mindset and tools from this book.It seems unfathomable to me that anyone who reads this book and truly cares about a participant's experience would ever organize a traditional meeting or event again. I know I'll never look at events the same way ... and I'll certainly never run them the same way either.

The class is part of a certificate course and the students bring a wide variety of skills and experience with them to the class. The Power of Participation helps you guide these types of scenarios so that your students or attendees get the most out of their time with you.

He is a genius with common sense ideas that he excellently explains so that you can win people over and pull off the logistics as well. Meetings are not easy. But they can be fun and productive. It is well rounded and covers the bulk of basic use items from the major apps.I knocked off one star for two reasons. First, it explains the same ideas over again and again for the word processor, spreadsheet and presentation apps. This could have easily been a simple sentence stating "just like in sheets, you can ..." Instead of duplicating several lengthy pages. Second, I would have liked to have seen more information on the management and configuration in the Google Apps for business side of thingsOverall I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to get up to speed on the Google suite of apps and I will certainly recommend it.

"Mis-ter Logan," the old-fashioned intercom rasped on Ethan's desk.He scowled at the thing and at the way his current secretary insisted on hissing his name. "Yes, Delores?" He'd never been in an office that required an intercom. It felt as if he'd walked into the 1970s.Of course, that was probably how old the intercom was. After all, Ethan was sitting in the headquarters of the Beaumont Brewery. This room—complete with hand-carved everything—probably hadn't been redecorated since, well…A very long time ago. The Beaumont Brewery was 160 years old, after all."Mis-ter Logan," Delores rasped again, her dislike for him palatable. "We're going to have to stop production on the Mountain Cold and Mountain Cold Light lines.""What? Why?" Logan demanded. The last thing he could afford was another shutdown.Ethan had been running this company for almost three months now. His firm, Corporate Restructuring Services, had beat out some heavy hitters for the right to handle the reorganization of the Beaumont Brewery, and Ethan had to make this count. If he—and, by extension, CRS—could turn this aging, antique company into a modern-day business, their reputation in the business world would be cemented.Ethan had expected some resistance. It was only natural. He'd restructured thirteen companies before taking the helm of Beaumont Brewery. Each company had emerged from the reorganization process leaner, meaner and more competitive in a global economy. Everyone won when that happened.Yes, thirteen success stories.Yet nothing had prepared him for the Beaumont Brewery."There's a flu going around," Delores said. "Sixty-five workers are home sick, the poor dears."A flu. Wasn't that just a laugh and a half? Last week, it'd been a cold that had knocked out forty-seven employees. And the week before, after a mass food poisoning, fifty-four people hadn't been able to make it in.Ethan was no idiot. He'd cut the employees a little slack the first two times, trying to earn their trust. But now it was time to lay down the law."Fire every single person who called in sick today."There was a satisfying pause on the other end of the intercom, and, for a moment, Ethan felt a surge of victory. The victorious surge was short-lived, however."Mis-ter Logan," Delores began. "Regretfully, it seems that the HR personnel in charge of processing terminations are out sick today.""Of course they are," he snapped. He fought the urge to throw the intercom across the room, but that was an impulsive, juvenile thing to do, and Ethan was not impulsive or juvenile. Not anymore. So, as unsatisfying as it was, he merely shut off the intercom and glared at his office door.He needed a better plan.He always had a plan when he went into a business. His method was proven. He could turn a flailing business around in as little as six months. But this? The Beaumont freaking Brewery? That was the problem, he decided. Everyone—the press, the public, their customers and especially the employees—still thought of this as the Beaumont Brewery. Sure, the business had been under Beaumont management for a good century and a half. That was the reason All-Bev, the conglomerate that had hired CRS to handle this reorganization, had chosen to keep the Beaumont name a part of the Brewery—the name-recognition value was through the roof. But it wasn't the Beaumont family's brewery anymore. They had been forced out months ago. And the sooner the employees realized that, the better. He looked around the office. It was beautiful, heavy with history and power. He'd heard that the conference table had been custom-made. It was so big and heavy that it'd been built in the actual office—they might have to take a wall out to remove it. Tucked in the far corner by a large coffee table was a grouping of two leather club chairs and a matching leather love seat. The coffee table was supposedly made of one of the original wagon wheels that Phillipe Beaumont had used when he'd crossed the Great Plains with a team of Percheron draft horses back in the 1880s.The only signs of the current decade were the flat-screen television that hung over the sitting area and the electronics on the desk, which had been made to match the conference table. The entire room screamed Beaumont so loudly he was practically deafened by it.He flipped on the hated intercom again. "Delores.""Yes, Mis—"He cut her off before she could mangle his name again."I want to redo the office. I want all this stuff gone. The curtains, the woodwork—and the conference table. All of it." Some of these pieces—hand carved and well cared for, like the bar—would probably fetch a pretty penny. "Sell it off."There was another satisfying pause."Yes, sir." For a moment, he thought she sounded subdued—cowed. As if she couldn't believe he would really dismantle the heart of the Beaumont Brewery. But then she added, "I know just the appraiser to call," in a tone that sounded…smug? He ignored her and went back to his computer. Two lines shut down was not acceptable. If either line didn't pull double shifts tomorrow, he wouldn't wait for HR to terminate employees. He'd do it himself. After all, he was the boss here. What he said went. And that included the furniture.Frances Beaumont slammed her bedroom door behind her and flopped down on her bed. Another rejection—she couldn't fall much lower. She was tired of this. She'd been forced to move back into the Beaumont mansion after her last project had failed so spectacularly that she'd had to give up her luxury condo in downtown Denver. She'd even been forced to sell most of her designer wardrobe. The idea—digital art ownership and crowdsourcing art patronage online by having buyers buy stock in digital art—had been fundamentally sound. Art might be timeless, but art production and collection had to evolve. She'd sunk a considerable portion of her fortune into Art Digitale, as well as every single penny she'd gotten from the sale of the Beaumont Brewery. What an epic, crushing mistake. After months of delays and false starts—and huge bills—Art Digitale had been live for three weeks before the funds ran out. Not a single transaction had taken place on the website. In her gilded life, she'd never experienced such complete failure. How could she? She was a Beaumont. Her business failure was bad enough. But worse? She couldn't get a job. It was as if being a Beaumont suddenly counted for nothing. Her first employer, the owner of Galerie Solaria, hadn't exactly jumped at the chance to have Frances come back, even though Frances knew how to flatter the wealthy, art-focused patrons and massage the delicate egos of artists. She knew how to sell art—didn't that count for something?Plus, she was a Beaumont. A few years ago, people would have jumped at the chance to be associated with one of the founding families of Denver. Frances had been an in-demand woman."Where did I go wrong?" she asked her ceiling.Unsurprisingly, it didn't have an answer. She'd just turned thirty. She was broke and had moved back in with her family—her brother Chadwick and his family, plus assorted Beaumonts from her father's other marriages. She shuddered in horror. When the family still owned the Brewery, the Beaumont name had meant something. Frances had meant something. But ever since that part of her life had been sold, she'd been…adrift. If only there was some way to go back, to put the Brewery under the family's control again.Yes, she thought bitterly, that was definitely an option. Her older brothers Chadwick and Matthew had walked away and started their own brewery, Percheron Drafts. Phillip, her favorite older brother, the one who had gotten her into parties and helped her build her reputation as the Cool Girl of Denver high society, had ensconced himself out on the Beaumont Farm and gotten sober. No more parties with him. And her twin brother, Byron, was starting a new restaurant.Everyone else was moving forward, pairing off. And Frances was stuck back in her childhood room, alone. Not that she believed a man would solve any of her problems. She'd grown up watching her father burn through marriage after unhappy marriage. No, she knew love didn't exist. Or if it did, it wasn't in the cards for her.She was on her own here. She opened up a message from her friend Becky and stared at the picture of a shuttered storefront. She and Becky had worked together at Galerie Solaria. Becky had no famous last name and no social connections, but she knew art and had a snarky sense of humor that cut through the bull. More to the point, Becky treated Frances like she was a real person, not just a special Beaumont snowflake. They had been friends ever since.Becky had a proposition. She wanted to open a new gallery, one that would merge the new-media art forms with the standard classics that wealthy patrons preferred. It wasn't as avant-garde as Frances's digital art business had been, but it was a good bridge between the two worlds. The only problem was Frances did not have the money to invest. She wished to God she did. She could co-own and comanage the gallery. It wouldn't bring in big bucks, but it could get her out of the mansion. It could get her back to being a somebody. And not just any somebody. She could go back to being Frances Beaumont—popular, respected, envied. She dropped her phone onto the bed in defeat. Right. Another fortune was just going to fall into her lap and she'd be in demand. Sure. And she would also sprout wings.True despair was sinking in when her phone rang. She answered it without even looking at the screen. "Hello?" she said morosely."Frances? Frannie," the woman said. "I know you may not remember me—I'm Delores Hahn. I used to work in accounting at—"The name rang a bell, an older woman who wore her hair in a tight bun. "Oh! Delores! Yes, you were at the Brewery. How are you?"The only people besides her siblings who called her Frannie were the longtime employees of the Beaumont Brewery. They were her second family—or at least, they had been."We've been better," Delores said. "Listen, I have a proposal for you. I know you've got those fancy art degrees."In the safety of her room, Frances blushed. After today's rejections, she didn't feel particularly fancy. "What kind of proposal?" Maybe her luck was about to change. Maybe this proposal would come with a paycheck."Well," Delores went on in a whisper, "the new CEO that AllBev brought in?"Frances scowled. "What about him? Failing miserably, I hope.""Sadly," Delores said in a not-sad-atall voice, "there's been an epidemic of Brew Flu going around. We had to halt production on two lines today."Frances couldn't hold back the laugh that burst forth from her. "Oh, that's fabulous.""It was," Delores agreed. "But it made Logan—that's the new CEO—so mad that he decided to rip out your father's office."Frances would have laughed again, except for one little detail. "He's going to destroy Daddy's office? He wouldn't dare!""He told me to sell it off. All of it—the table, the bar, everything. I think he'd even perform an exorcism, if he thought it'd help," she added. Her father's office. Technically, it had most recently been Chadwick's office. But Frances had never stopped thinking of her father and that office together. "So what's your proposal?""Well," Delores said, her voice dropping past whisper and straight into conspirator. "I thought you could come do the appraisals. Who knows—you might be able to line up buyers for some of it.""And…" Frances swallowed. The following was a crass question, but desperate times and all that. "And would this Logan fellow pay for the appraisal? If I sold the furniture myself—" say, to a certain sentimental older brother who'd been the CEO for almost ten years "—would I get a commission?""I don't see why not."Frances tried to see the downside of this situation, but nothing popped up. Delores was right—if anyone had the connections to sell off her family's furniture, it'd be Frances.Plus, if she could get a foothold back in the Brewery, she might be able to help all those poor, flu-stricken workers. She wasn't so naive to think that she could get a conglomerate like AllBev to sell the company back to the family, but…She might be able to make this Logan's life a little more difficult. She might be able to exact a little revenge. After all—the sale of the Brewery had been when her luck had turned sour. And if she could get paid to do all of that?"Let's say Friday, shall we?" That was only two days away, but that would give her plenty of time to plan and execute her trap. "I'll bring the donuts."Delores actually giggled. "I was hoping you'd say that."Oh, yes. This was going to be great.* * *"Mis-ter Logan, the appraiser is here."Ethan set down the head count rolls he'd been studying. Next week, he was reducing the workforce by 15 percent. People with one or more "illness absences" were going to be the first to find themselves out on the sidewalk with nothing more than a box of their possessions."Good. Send him in."But no nerdy-looking art geek walked into the office. Ethan waited and then switched the intercom back on. Before he could ask Delores the question, though, he heard a lot of people talking—and laughing? It sounded as though someone was having a party in the reception area. What the hell?He strode across the room and threw open his office door. There was, point of fact, a party going on outside. Workers he'd only caught glimpses of before were all crowded around Delores's desk, donuts in their hands and sappy smiles on their faces."What's going on out here?" he thundered. "This is a business, people, not a—"Then the crowd parted, and he saw her.God, how had he missed her? A woman with a stunning mane of flame-red hair sat on the edge of Delores's desk. Her body was covered by an emerald-green gown that clung to every curve like a lover's hands. His fingers itched to trace the line of her bare shoulders. She was not an employee. That much was clear. She was, however, holding a box of donuts. The good-natured hum he'd heard on the intercom died away. The smiles disappeared, and people edged away from him."What is this?" he demanded. The color drained out of several employees' faces, but his tone didn't appear to have the slightest impact on the woman in the green gown. His eyes were drawn to her back, to the way her ass looked sitting on the edge of the desk. Slowly—so slowly it almost hurt him—she turned and looked at him over her shoulder. He might have intimidated the workers. He clearly had not intimidated her.She batted her eyelashes as a cryptic smile danced across her deep red lips. "Why, it's Donut Friday."Ethan glared at her. "What?"She pivoted, bringing more of her profile into view. Dear God, that dress—that body. The strapless dress came to a deep V over her chest, doing everything in its power to highlight the pale, creamy skin of her decolletage. He shouldn't stare. He wasn't staring. Really. Her posture shifted. It was like watching a dancer arrange herself before launching into a series of gravity-defying pirouettes. "You must be new here," the woman said in a pitying tone. "It's Friday. That's the day I bring donuts."Individually, he understood each word and every implication of her tone and movement. But together? "Donut Friday?" He'd been here for months, and this was the first time he'd heard anything about donuts."Yes," she said. She held out the box. "I bring everyone a donut. Would you like the last one? I'm afraid all I have left is a plain.""And who are you, if I may ask?""Oh, you may." She lowered her chin and looked up at him through her lashes. She was simply the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen, which was more than enough to turn his head. But the fact that she was playing him for the fool—and they both knew it?There were snickers from the far-too-large audience as she held out her hand for him—not to shake, no. She held it out as though she expected him to kiss it, as if she were the queen or something."I'm Frances Beaumont. I'm here to appraise the antiques."

This one was a slightly different lead in than I anticipated, with characters that stole the show as well. When we first meet Ethan, we discover he's between a rock and a hard place. He took over the Beaumont Brewery in the hopes that he could bring the company back where it should be, but it didn't work out as expected. The employees are wholeheartedly loyal to the family the company started with, and their loyalty isn't benefiting Ethan one bit. Enter Frances, one of the Beaumonts. She comes in with a bang, making things clear to Ethan about everything that's going wrong. His solution to gaining the loyalty of the employees? Asking Frances to become his fake fiancé. It seems to work out well, but then seduction and feelings come into play.Falling for Her Fake Fiancé was a wonderful romance! It hit all the major notes from high stakes to pretend romance that leads to more. I was invested in their charade, standing by waiting for them to realize who the other person really is, not just who they think they are based on their name and what they represent. Sarah M. Anderson has me curious for more of the Beaumont Heirs series! My Rating: Very Good

A Good one By Books And Spoons Blog I love the fake relationship turning into a real love connection type of stories. In this story both Ethan and Frances are a bit desperate in their situations, Ethan's more severely so.The interest and attraction are there from the first moment, even though Frances claims she doesn't believe in love. But she likes to be romanced by Ethan, and the game is on. The banter is non stop, and everything is a power game for them. Who will win and who will need to step up the game. But love is often waiting in an unexpected moment and place. The story is well written, and has great flow in it. The characters and their families are interesting.I just didn't like Frances' attitude of entitlement, she acted like a spoiled princess most of the time. Also from the dialog, it reminded me of a historical novel, just the way they spoke and thought. But if you love the billionaire stories, with fake relationships, that turn into a true love connection, this story is for you!~ Three Spoons

AndersonHarlequin Desire, Oct 1 2015, $5.25ISBN: 9780373734184In Denver, Ethan Logan takes over modernizing the over century and a half old Beaumont Brewery starting with bringing interoffice communications out of the 1970s. However, Ethan never expected the pushback from the frightened staff who overtly opposes the needed reengineering changes to save the business and their jobs.Ethan realizes he needs a family member to help him win over the employees. Thus he turns to the fifth heir Frances Beaumont for assistance with a whacky concept of a marriage of convenience between them. Frances agrees to marry him if he meets her stipulations. Neither the businessman nor the first daughter debutant expected to fall in love; but who will risk their heart first to renegotiate a permanent deal. The fifth Beaumont Heirs romance (see His Son, Her Secret) is an enjoyable boardroom contemporary that ironically nicely uses the overused, typically historical marriage of convenience premise to modernize a Colorado brewery. The protagonists are a nice pairing of a married couple preparing for their divorce even before they exchange I do; until each wants to modify the contract, but fears confessing how they feel.Harriet Klausner

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Is that the end? By Tammie S. This was a good book but it kinda left me hanging at the end. It could be a stand alone book or a part of a series. Keema seemed like the normal young girl who wants to make it out of the projects. I understand that but her occupation at the end of the book, threw me for a loop. Definitely did not see that coming. There was alot of jealousy going on in this book. I started off as team Lamar but was starting to change my mind by the end of the book. Waiting to see if there is a part two & what happens.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ghetto Love By Pamela Johnston Ward I started reading this book last night, and didn't put it down until I was done. This was a great read. Keema was spoiled and Lamar was just dumb. He had a problem with letting others into his life and of course they tried to destroy what he already had, and what he was trying to build. The saying goes that opposites attract and these two are definitely opposite. Will they make it or will they allow others to come into their lives and destroy everything. You have to read the book to find out. This is my first read by this author, but it won't be my last.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Choose your journal by it's cover! By Homeschooling Mom Hello, (From the mom who made these homeschooling journals!) I designed these books for my own homeschooling children. At first I just made one for my 12 year old daughter. Then all the kids wanted one. The friends wanted them too! So I made a variety of covers to tell them apart and make all the kids feel special and designed them for a wider age range. They are all designed to work well for kids ages 7 to 17 with ADHD, Asperger's and Dyslexia. The main difference is the cover art. When you choose a journal, you tend to pick the cover that you love. So look at all the choices and choose the journals by the cover. Get a different one for each child. There is one difference, we have a few journals that include scripture readings from the Bible, that is noted in the description.I made the covers uniquely interesting for boys and girls. My boys did not want flowers and butterflies, my girls did not want planets or boats. So instead of making gender neutral covers, like everyone else, I tried to make something for everyone. I have 8 daughters and two sons, so only a couple of the journals are for boys. I wanted to be sure that when someone is searching for homeschooling supplies for kids with Asperger's, Dyslexia or ADHD that they would be able to find our journals. They also all include Charlotte Mason methods and mix in Unit Studies and Unschooling ideas. So we wanted families who are looking for unschooling supplies and Charlotte Mason to find them too. Sorry for the confusion! Just pick the one with the cover your child likes best. Thanks!Sarah J. Brown

He does not have Asperger's Syndrome but he is on the spectrum so there are common issues. I highly, highly recommend it for anyone working with a child on the spectrum. Even if one is not homeschooling, it's a great resource. There are pages for writing, drawing, coloring, spelling, math, film studies and logic. I love the pages for identification of emotions and eye-contact work. This is well done and honestly appreciated by this mom. My son has enjoyed doing the work.I also think it would be great for an adult too. This is not limited to kids.

Meike von Bismarck is Germany's famed amateur tennis player, and the daughter of German aristocracy. It is a time when the National Socialist Party has risen to power, along with Adolph Hitler, and there are swastika flags waving in the breeze. Helen Wheeler, who was raised in the Cannery Row section of Monterey, CA., now lives in New York City, and is America's answer to Meike,.She is also her former lover. Helen is approached by a government agent to spy on Meike, to see if she has joined the National Socialist Party. What follows are some terrific tennis matches, along with underground tunnels, much intrigue, some terrifying moments, and some incredible love scenes. I've enjoyed all of Yolanda Wallace's previous novels, and I thoroughly enjoyed Break Point. Her take on an awful time in history, as well as the well drawn charaacters of Meike and Helen make me hope for a sequel!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. So much Drama!!! By Ameliah Faith Set in the late 1930s just before WWII. Meike is a champion tennis star. Unfortunately, she has also been targeted by Hitler to become a Nazi supporter and a face for Nazi sports. Under threats and near constant guard she resists.Helen is the American equal to Meike. She has accepted the assignment to spy (especially on Meike as the two were loves once upon a time.) to keep out of jail. Now they are together in Germany. Will Meike be able to hold out against the Nazi's? Will Helen's betrayal be the final thing that breaks her? How will either of them survive spirit intact? This book was hard and heavy but good. It is so full of suspense, gads I nearly bit my fingernails to the quick! The characters are so easy to care about. The near constant anxiety as I worried endlessly for Meike's life was almost too intense. It was interesting to see Helen grow and so painful to see what Meike was put through but when they were together it was such a relief! In the end it all worked out the way it was suppose to but darn if Ms Wallace didn't make me work for it!

I'm not big into tennis but I cared about both of the main characters. I like that they both basically stuck to their morals to do the right thing rather than the thing that people were trying to make them do instead.I LOVED the ending of this book. It made me very happy to read.Read the rest of the review here: https://blowpopsbooks.wordpress.com/2015/10/15/review-break-point/

"Government 2.0 is an extraordinarily detailed and highly technical addition to the literature on government reform. The plan laid out in Government 2.0 challenges traditional paradigm about how to structure a government whose primary intent is service of its citizenry. Imholt's principled focus on ensuring that government does this efficiently is evident in his recognition of the sacrifices that both conservatives and liberals must make to achieve that end. " This summary is courtesy of the Charles Koch Institute which reviewed an earlier draft of this book.  The internal review also commented: "objective approach has the distinct potential to unite those usual ideological opponents.". I wish to thank the Koch Institute for those words. This book deals with the larger issue that is not addressed in our public policy discussions. While people have become concerned with what government does, they are equally concerned with how the government performs its function. This book begins the arduous process of addressing that deficiency within our body politic. Specifically the book entails using technology to separate individual private information from government control returning it to the individual. It raises the bar on the need to re-evaluate exactly why our executive branch is so badly organized proposing how to decentralize Washington while improving service delivery. The book analyzes what and how government services can be privatized in the best sense of the term, not as a means of eliminating the service, but to insure the service is delivered effectively, appropriately and with respect for the individual receiving the service. The second book in the series will begin the process of detailing how the concepts in government 2.0 can begin to be both advocated and implemented.

On the public service side, Steve was elected a member of the Rockford Illinois School Board in the early 1980s. At the time, the School District was the second largest school district in Illinois after Chicgo. Steve served on the Hampshire Library Board in the late 1980s where he helped get a new library for this Illinois town of less than 2000 people. In 2015 Steve is running for the Virginia House of delegates as an independent. Steve lives in Richmond Virginia with his wife Toni. Together, they raised three girls and a boy. Their children are now adults with successful careers in their own right. One has a career in technology. Another has a career in education, A third is a pediatrician, and the fourth is an attorney. Now retired from the professional side, Steve makes woefully inadequate attempts to help mentor three of their four granddaughters while his wife has achieved the greatest success of all by mentoring, cuddling and teaching the next generation. They both continue to work in the home now accurately renamed Gram's House.

By Timothy Imholt An engineer takes a good hard look at how we should revamp the methods by which we deliver government services. This book shows us a way forward. Is it the final answer? Well, only time will tell but it is certainly a step up from the money wasting pit we see going on around us with our tax dollars today. For years we have trusted lifelong politicians with deciding the best way to deal with delivering vital government services. That is the wrong answer. We need engineers who have spent a lifetime doing so and we should listen to what they have to say. This new government architecture is a great start, but like all good system designs it can remain flexible and be changed if need be.I hope this is read, and enacted.

Sullivan As a follow up to my basic into to Hadoop with Hadoop 2 Quick Start Guide, I wanted to get more detail on the security features available in the Hadoop ecosystem and this sounded like it fitted the bill and was recently published (June 2015) so figured it would be pretty up to date. One thing that I immediately liked about the book is that apart from a very brief few pages of an intro to security concepts, it get straight into things, which for me is always a good indication taht there won't be much padding in the book. The book first starts off with a section on security architecture starting with a basic look threat modelling for distributed systems, which is a nice touch as really threat modelling should be part of any security architecture discussion and even touching on this at a high level is great, as is puts the whole book in context. The next chapter moves onto general security architectures in a Hadoop environment, covering network level segregation, OS level security and an overview of the different types of Hadoop node roles. This was a great start to the book as immediately it starts working through the different nodes, what user roles need access to them, what nodes can be segregated from direct access and how at a high level they interact for data loads and job submission. The final chapter of the architecture section finishes up with an overview of Kerberos, which while initially seemed a bit strange, it becomes obvious why later on as Kerberos plays such a key role in Hadoop security. If you need to get up to speed quickly on Kerberos, I’d highly recommend Kerberos: A Network Authentication System… it’s a quick and easy read that I read over ten years ago and it’s still as good now as it was then. The next section deep dives more into authentication and at this point the book gets straight into the hands on configuration guide, covering detailed configuration steps required to map Kerberos principles into the Hadoop world, how to map to local users, how user groups work in Hadoop and mapping to LDAP groups. The chapter then moves on to cover the various authentication protocols in use across the Hadoop ecosystem, before explaining the differences between simple and Kerberos authn and then a nice dive into token auth, including the flows of how delegation tokens are created to allow various systems to impersonate users. The chapter finishes off with a fully worked Kerberos authn configuration guide, which to be fair I skimmed over as I don’t need that level of detail at the moment. The next chapter moves onto authz covering HDFS ACLs and extended ACLs and various service level authorisations before moving on to MapReduce (1 and 2) and YARN, and Zookeeper ACLs, HBase, and Oozie. There’s a few nice worked examples here of the effects of authz restrictions and what errors users will see when their access is restricted. The book then moves on to cover Sentry, which is Apache’s attempt to centralise authz within the Hadoop ecosystem, which after reading through the previous few chapters it’s obvious it’s needed! The basic architecture on which Sentry works is covered and how it integrates with the various applications and then walks though how to configure each application to use Sentry. Again a very practical oriented approach is taken here with a lot of detail on the configuration steps. The last chapter in this section covers the logging available by default in each of the various applications and their basic config. This is a quick chapter and really just goes to show the configuration aspect, rather than any analysis approaches to the logs. The third section of the book moves onto data security, specifically to cover encryption of data in transit and at-rest, starting with great coverage of how HDFS file encryption works. What was particularly good in this chapter was the strong emphasis it places on the key management and also making the reader conscious of potential lack of encryption on temporary data such as logs. The second half of the chapter covers encryption of data in transit, mainly focusing on the configuration of SSL/TLS in the various applications in the ecosystem. The next chapter is a short one and looks at security of data as it is loaded into the Hadoop ecosystem, covering both the confidentiality and integrity of the data, but mainly focusing on confidentiality/encryption. The following chapter then covers how client access of data in the Hadoop environment can be performed securely, focusing of course on the edge nodes and how users interact with them, through command line RPC or APIs. From an architecture perspective, I found this chapter particularly helpful as it does a good job of describing the trust boundary that will exist in most deployments and how this should be architected securely. The last chapter in this section covers Cloudera Hue and to be honest I just skimmed this one as it wasn’t relevant to me.The final section of the book covers some use cases nicely, outlining scenarios with business and security requirements, before walking through how to architect and configure the right mix of controls to meet the requirements. For me I would have loved more examples here as this is more at the level I’m working at, rather than the technical configuration. But still, great to see it presented in this way.Overall, this was a great book that to be fair goes into a lot more depth in terms of technical configuration settings than I needed. This can make it a tough read if you’re just looking for the high level, however, if you’re setting up a Hadoop cluster then this should be your go-to book. However, it also works great at the level I was looking for as it's got a strong focus on architecture considerations and puts the security functionality into context rather than just explaining the feature sets available. You just may need to skim some of the more detailed sections like I did!

By Ben Rothke As the recent RSA Conference, there were scores of vendors offering various endpoint solutions to protect laptops, desktop and mobile devices. These software solutions are clearly needed given the value of the data on these devices. When it comes to Hadoop, firms are storing massive amounts of data (massive as in petabytes and more); often without the same level of security they have on a laptop. In Hadoop Security: Protecting Your Big Data Platform, authors Ben Spivey and Joey Echeverria have written an invaluable reference for anyone looking to ensure their Hadoop data sets are appropriated secured. This is the type of book that you want your Hadoop administrators to have close by.Hadoop is one part of an open-source software framework for big data. The authors correctly note that one of the hardest jobs a Hadoop security administrator has is to keep track of how the many components handle security, access control and other authentication functions. With that, the book does a great job in providing the reader with a thorough overview of the various aspects of the Hadoop security framework. The authors detail how to correctly configure the security features for each of the components. The authors also provide actual code segments for each of the areas.Anyone using Hadoop should certainly make sure their staff knows about the security controls required to keep their data sets safe. For that, make sure they read Hadoop Security: Protecting Your Big Data Platform.

Triple J's SDSUG Review 3 By Triple J "Hadoop Security: Protecting Your Big Data Platform" is an excellent, well-written book which describes the new technology, Apache Hadoop and the numerous security features within Apache Hadoop that can be implemented. This book starts with a basic history of how and why Apache Hadoop was developed and then breaks down how Apache Hadoop can be secured in three (3) sections which are: 1) Security Architecture, 2) Authentication, Authorization & Accounting (AAA) and 3) Data Security. A fourth section entitled Putting It All Together summarizes the first three sections. The best thing about this book is it does a very thorough job of not only explaining the functionality of the very complex Apache Hadoop system and all it's components but also explaining how to configure the built-in security features within these components. Actual code segments that provide more details for enhancing the security for these components makes this book an excellent reference guide for any security professional. I would highly recommend adding this book to your IT Security collection if you are facing the daunting task of securing an Apache Hadoop system.

IT begins by asking the child's name and presenting the question.'how was your day?' Interactive from the first page which I really appreciated. I also really liked the fact that the drawings are in the middle of the text to illustrate the points being made. There are all kinds of animals, also, to hold the child's attention. So many things that I really liked about this book including questions on the magic words...and, those magic words are used to show good manners. So, please, thank you, when to say you are sorry and in general learning to be polite and respectful. Being patient is also covered and helping your parents cleaning up after dinner.Just a truly delightful book that covers so many topics in a short amount of space. Well done to this author for a truly remarkable book. I must go and see the other books that she has written. Most highly recommended. Edited to reflect the fact that I reviewed the Kindle Format and not the paperback.

The triumphant, long-awaited return of a writer of remarkable gifts: in this collection of richly imagined stories—her first new work in twenty years—the master of short fiction delivers a diverse suite of stories about men and women confronting their vulnerabilities in times of transition and challenge.

Beginning in the 1980s, Elizabeth Tallent’s work, appeared in some of our most prestigious literary publications, including The New Yorker, Esquire, and Harper’s. Marked by its quiet power and emotional nuance, her fiction garnered widespread praise.

Now, at long last, Tallent returns with a new collection of diverse, thematically linked, and deeply powerful stories that confirm her enduring gift for capturing relationships at their moment of transformation: marriages breaking apart, people haunted by memories of old love and reaching haltingly toward new futures. Mendocino Fire explore moments of fracture and fragmentation; it limns the wilderness of our inner psyche and brilliantly evokes the electric tension of deep emotion. In these pages, Tallent explores expectations met and thwarted, and our never-ending quest to avoid being alone.

With this breathtaking collection, Elizabeth Tallent cements her rightful place in the literary pantheon beside her contemporaries Lorrie Moore, Ann Beattie, and Louise Erdrich. Visceral and surprising, profound yet elemental, Mendocino Fire is a welcome visit with a wise and familiar friend.

Mendocino Fire: Stories, by Elizabeth Tallent

Review “[Tallent] brings an immense complexity and dimension to the domestic affairs of the heart. At times, these stories almost veer toward the epic, emotionally speaking, and are reminiscent of the muscular, sharp-eyed narratives of the late Robert Stone.” (San Francisco Chronicle)“Elizabeth Tallent is, and always has been, a vivid, meticulous, and astutely inviting writer. These new stories vitally tell us how things are for us, in the most acute and memorable ways. Her ear is perfect; her gaze searing and unmistakable.” (Richard Ford)“Enchanting. . . . Immediately engaging. . . . The ability to create characters who force us to withhold judgment and leave us gasping at their absolute, solid reality isn’t the result of any special kindness or goodness on the part of the author. (New York Times Book Review)“Elizabeth Tallent’s style is so distinctive, and it’s the kind of writing I so enjoy, never obvious, full of complex thought and perception, so boldly ambitious.” (Tessa Hadley, author of Clever Girl)“In her fourth collection, Tallent explores the spaces between people through 10 expertly crafted stories. . . . Tallent’s collection offers a smart, thought-provoking study of desire and disappointment.” (Publishers Weekly)“Tallent’s assured voice is a pleasure to follow through this book. . . . An ambitious and wide-ranging set of stories that creates empathy for most of its characters due to Tallent’s generous imagination.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Driving, furious, erotic, gilded, the sentences flying at you like arrows...Her book is a meditation on the state of marriage.” (Tin House)“MENDOCINO FIRE throws sparks.” (Vanity Fair)“Tallent’s characters are most nearly themselves, because of or in spite of love, and that is the rich truth of this book.” (Oregonian)“Excellent. . . . In these stories, [Tallent] continues to explore relationships on the brink of transformation.” (San Jose Mercury News)“A good short story is a visceral thing, but it is rare to find stories as elegant, as perfectly made as Elizabeth Tallent’s, that put a scare into us. Tallent is a magician: her characters get sawed in half by life and stand up whole.” (Valerie Trueblood, author of Search Party and Seven Loves)“The characters in these stories have been around the block a few times. They are often exes. But they are no match for Tallent, who, in a finely articulated style, shows herself to be quite deft at throwing monkey wrenches into the machinery of complacence.” (Carol Anshaw, author of Carry the One)“The first pleasure here is the glitter and darkness of the prose only Tallent can produce; but the profounder gift in these stories is the author’s empathy, a tireless empathy, her knowledge of her characters’ peculiar entitlements and pangs and assumptions.” (Louis B. Jones, author of Innocence and Ordinary Money)

From the Back Cover

The long-awaited return of a writer of rare emotional wisdom

The son of an aging fisherman becomes ensnared in a violent incident that forces him to confront his broken relationship with his father. A woman travels halfway across the country to look for her ex-husband, only to find her attention drawn in a surprising direction. A millworker gives safe harbor to his son's pregnant girlfriend, until an ambiguous gesture upsets their uneasy equilibrium. These and other stories—of yearning, loss, and tentative new connections—come together in Mendocino Fire, the first new collection in two decades from the widely admired Elizabeth Tallent.

Diverse in character and setting, rendered in an exhilarating, exacting prose, these stories confirm Tallent's enduring gift for capturing relationships in moments of transformation: marriages breaking apart, people haunted by memories of old love and reaching haltingly toward new futures. The result is a book that reminds us how our lives are shaped by moments of fracture and fragmentation, by expectations met and thwarted, and by our never-ending quest to be genuinely seen.

Profound yet elemental, Mendocino Fire marks the welcome return of a sage and surprising voice in American fiction.

Tallent explores relationships between genders, with an emphasis on female relationships, as well as broken marriages. Many of the stories deal with creative people, writers, artists, or ecological/environmental activists. Several are set on university campuses or have a tie in to academia. Almost all of the stories involve exes, severed relationships, struggling relationships. The emotions run high as we hear the inner thoughts of the characters struggling to make sense of their lives, actions, obsessions, and circumstances. Tallent describes lives that are messy, with emotional fallout and struggles. All of these stories are extremely well written with exceptionally descriptive prose and phrasing. There are several passages I marked to take note of in my advanced reading copy. Tallent manages to capture the inner thoughts of her characters and their feelings with a clarity of emotion that is complete and realistic, but with a poetic grace and beauty of wording that often belies the raw emotions being expressed.I don't know if the page numbers will be similar, but the acuity and mental pictures drawn from some of her descriptions is astonishing. For example: "Tamped down love means not only sublimated energy but also a ranting, pointless impatience: before long, she's sick of obsession's two-lane Nebraska highway." (pg 79)Or: "It can't be true that she can't see in. That she can't know the story. This is her life she's been shut out of!"(pg. 97) And on the next page "Divorce is not linear. One morning there is peace of mind, the next there is wrath."Contents include:The Wrong Son - a young man in a working-class California fishing community has a complicated, combative relationship with his fatherTabriza - a man wonders if a valuable rug he dug out of the trash is evil and wreaking havoc on his third marriageMystery Caller - a woman places calls to her first husband but doesn't actually talk to himEros 101 - an female professor is obsessed/in love with her female studentNobody You Know - recently divorced woman travels halfway across the country and meets her ex's new, young wifeThe Wilderness - musings of an English professorNever Come Back - parents have their son's pregnant girlfriend and subsequent grandchild continue to live with them after the girlfriend takes offMendocino Fire - a young eco-activist grows up in an unconventional mannerNarrator - a young female writer falls for an older famous male writerBriar Switch - a woman's father is dying from lung cancer and she's has to drive through a blizzard to get to himDisclosure: I received an advanced reading copy of this book from Harper Collins and TLC for review purposes.

Ten Excellent New Short Stories by Elizabeth Tallent By C J Singh Reviewed by C J Singh (Berkeley, California)A few days ago, Elizabeth Tallent gave a reading of her story, “Mendocino Fire,” from her latest book at Mrs. Dalloway’s, an independent bookstore, in Berkeley, California. "Performed her wonderful story" about tree-hugging young conservationists is a more accurate description. Of the several leading authors I’ve recently heard reading from their latest work at Mrs Dalloway's, none comes close to her vivid performance.Of the book’s ten excellent short stories “The Mystery Caller” resonated with me the most. It complements one of her earlier stories, “No One’s a Mystery,” a much anthologized story we discussed in our writers’ group. That story is about an 18-year girl who has convinced herself that her seducer, older and already married, will marry her despite his repeated assertions of no such intention. “The Mystery Caller,” a woman repeatedly calls her former husband but stays silent.

By M Denise Costello MENDOCINO FIRE: STORIES is a book of short stories by writer Elizabeth Tallent. Previously Tallent has written four other books, three other collections of short stories and one novel. Her last collection of short stories was published 20 years ago. Tallent has taught at Stanford University while her stories have been featured in a variety of journals such as The Threepenny Review and Boulevard.I had never read any of Tallent’s earlier work and was blown away by her wonderful style and subjects. Each story is a unique and different gem of good writing. The stories all center around some sort of relationship be it a father/son, husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, girlfriend/girlfriend, etc. I found this book to be widely diverse in relationships and problematic issues. Tallent’s writing captures the subtleties and innuendoes and general nuances of a wide array of problems between two people. My favorite story from the book is probably “Tabriz.” This story is about a twice-divorced man who is remarried for the third time. This new wife comes out to him that she is really a Republican and he just can’t deal with it. Also involved is a rug he finds in the middle of nowhere and he brings it home. The wife just can’t deal with this strange object the husband found on his own and she has issues with this rug! Anyway, the story brings out all the little absurdities that people deal with and/or overlook in a relationship. So many of these stories bring out the give/take and quirkiness of people in general. This might not be fun to read when you are in the midst of relationship troubles, but I highly recommend these stories.
