The aim of this book is primarily to show a little of the daily lives of people living under a repressive, brutal regime and make that lifeless body being hauled out of the sea real - that was Rahwa, I taught her at Mai Nefhi High School. She was a good student.

This book brought back lots of memories of his exploits and experiences, both good and bad. The style of writing is unusual but typically Kevin and serves to get across the stories of the plight of some of the people he came across. Not always an easy read, but a compelling account.

Cover Photo Taken in the Wrong Country By Gunidan What I find strange about this book, is the pictures on the cover which are definitely not from Eritrea. Although the book is titled 'Inside Eritrea,' all the pictures on the cover, which are 3 different frames of the same shot seem to have been taken in Addis Ababa. The blue and white minibus taxi in the background, the large billboard with the Ethiopian flag of green, yellow, and red stripes and the high-rise building under construction indicate that the picture is necessarily taken somewhere in Ethiopia. This seems to be a misrepresentation.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. some problems By Ronnie Pitman This book often does not follow Swift standard practices. For example, it sometimes starts a file name with an underscore ( _ ). Rather than title a title label titleLabel, it uses myLabel. Elsewhere it uses myBtn. It puts comments after (below) a line of code, rather than before or to the right of the code. As I write this, the code and resource files for the projects are at the publisher website as .zip.html files. Whatever that is, it opens as gibberish. Strip off the .html to make it a regular zip file and it will open. I notified the publisher of this problem. Earlier, I tweeted the author asking where the resource files were; he didn't respond. Finally, and fatally, the code is broken. I downloaded the code for Chapter 4 and it would not build due to errors. Some of these are simply because the book's version of Swift is out of date. I'm running the latest released version on my computer, not a beta.Update: the author has now responded with an offer to help.

Great Book From a Beginner Point of View By MCB I'm self-taught when it comes to mobile application programming, which I've learned from books like this one. Having knowledge a little above beginner in Objective-C, I wanted to check out what Swift has to offer. This is a great book to get started in Swift and I could pretty easily grasp all of the material covered. I'm not sure how useful it will be for a seasoned professional, but as someone who wanted to learn more about Swift, I thought it was very helpful.

Well explained with Swift By Rohan Kadolkar This book explains the core game development using swift. It is well explained from the scratch, easy to understand even for beginners.Everything is practically explained using the simple code.If you're a beginner in game development, you can go for this book.

Grunt Cookbook covers some of the most popular plugins available and provides the essential foundation needed to explore all the capabilities/tasks that can be accomplished using Grunt.Until I came upon Grunt, I'd created Perl scripts and Chef recipes to automate the management of all the database monitoring and web sites I had deployed. The task of deploying new sites and managing the existing sites had become overwhelming. I needed a tool that could automate the deployment and management of the existing sites but also flexible to changes in requirements since not all sites are the same. I had the misguided belief that I could use a Perl/Chef-solo/Git combination to manage the various monitoring/web sites I had deployed. After exploring Grunt using Grunt Cookbook, I was able to automate tasks that I couldn't do just using the Perl/Git/Chef-solo combination. The problem I have with the other Grunt books available is that they focus exclusively on web site creation and management. Grunt Cookbook opened my eyes to the limitless capabilities that Grunt provides. Using Grunt, the grunt-ssh, grunt-shell plugins and Git, I am able to automate monitoring and site updates from a centralized location. I found the "File Management" and "Creating Custom Tasks" chapters the most invaluable to my endeavors.I recommend also visiting the websites of the various plugins mentioned in this cookbook.

By Packer Family Grunt is an excellent build automation tool for web development and this book is a great resource for using it. There were numerous ready to use recipes which helped me better understand and leverage its automation to consistently build and deploy our JavaScript code base in our environment.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Good Collection of Techniques to use with Grunt By David Nunez Grunt is an outstanding build automation tool for web development and this book is now one of the best resources for learning and mastering it. The recipes cover a range of topics from script and stylesheet minification, triggering unit tests, processing files, prepping and publishing a project, and even building your own custom Grunt plugins. Some of those topics are covered in more depth than others, but each gets at least a fair amount of attention or provides useful additional resources to pursue the topics further.I was already familiar with several basic processes introduced early in the book (stylesheet and script conversion, minification, concatenation, etc.) but many of the middle to later techniques introduced in the book were brand new to me. The author's use of symlink, curling, processing functions, and task functions were all concepts I'd never realized were available in Grunt and helped me broaden my expectations for the tool as a whole. Even some of the recipes that didn't cover their topic in-depth were still enough to get me interested and learn more about it on my own.Although the material covered in this book is useful, I believe there were certain topics that could have been covered or more thoroughly covered. First, Grunt is one of multiple JavaScript build automation tools - Gulp being the most widely recognized - and there was no mention of the advantages of using Grunt over the other tools or how it answers the challenges raised by its competitors. I'm not saying the author needs to be an evangelist for Grunt, but the debate is very real and the fact that it was never addressed was a shortcoming. An unnecessary criticism against Grunt is that you merely configure your tasks JSON-style and never have the freedom to write freely in JavaScript for more complicated tasks (the way Gulp allows), however this author successfully demonstrated the usage of task functions and the additional power you have to access config params, task params, and files in true JavaScript fashion. It would have been the true icing on the cake to see Grunt configured to use the file-stream engine driving Gulp (which has been exposed now as a separate npm module) so users could see they have the ability to work easily with streams for those tasks where they don't wish to create temporary files and clean them up afterwards.Second, I doubt there will be any readers who find more than half of the recipes useful (possibly closer to a third) because much of the middle of the book contains recipes for "either or" tools. For example, there are several recipes for Jade OR Handlebars, for LESS, SASS, OR Stylus, and this pattern continues for several chapters throughout the middle of the book. It would be like having a cookbook that lists a simple recipe for a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich, followed by one for peanut butter and marmalade, and yet another for chunky peanut butter and grape jelly, and a final one for chunky peanut butter and marmalade. In my opinion, it made for a somewhat tiring pace throughout the middle of the book.Additionally, the recipes in the first 3/4 of the book were not terribly creative and each was often prefaced by a short sentence or two that didn't sell its use case very well. There were numerous introductions to the tune of "sometimes you may have need to do [blank], so you would use this tool". I think it important that an author often attempt to sell the reader on the need for a technique by giving a real world example of problem it helps solve. There was very, very little of that prefacing these recipes. Also, until the last two chapters there were very few recipes that showed real world complexity, and while you can argue that the author was ramping up the level of complexity throughout the book, more imaginative examples would have been better. We expect API documentation and READMEs to be extremely plain and to fail at demonstrating a wide ranges of uses, but not a cookbook. Several times I either failed to get the point of certain tools in a given recipe or failed to see some of the best uses for them (such as symlink) due to overly brief recipe introductions and/or overly simple examples. It's not enough to cover a variety of tools if the examples barely add more explanation or examples that can be found right on the landing page for the tool's page on npm.I know it sounds like a lot of criticism, but the book was overall a great read and I've marked many pages as ones to remember for the future. The quality of recipes was a bit uneven, but that doesn't take away from the fact that there were great recipes in here and this is still one of the best resources out there for looking at Grunt in-depth.

By James I'm starting to detect pattern with Amherst Media - strictly middle of road fare; at least if the author is any good. This one is actually a little better than some of their other offerings. The book layout somehow makes everything seem less. The print quality and physical constructions seems as good as any; so maybe the printer is better than the publisher.

The recipes consist of items like 'sexy girl, red lipstick, good light' but no tips on posing, eliciting a response, or anything good like that. There are a ton of typos & the same words are used over & over again (sometimes in the same sentence). Multiple typos

Best Ebook Online Freedom to Fail: How do I foster risk-taking and innovation in my classroom? (ASCD Arias), by Andrew K. Miller

In The Freedom to Fail, veteran educator Andrew K. Miller explains the many benefits of intentionally designing opportunities for students to "fail forward" in the classroom. He provides a raft of strategies for ensuring that students experience small, constructive failures as a means to greater achievement, and offers practical suggestions for ensuring that constructive failure doesn't detrimentally affect students' summative assessments. He also describes how teachers, too, can benefit from failure.Establishing a culture that embraces the freedom to fail helps students to adopt a growth mindset, take risks in the service of greater learning, and develop realistic expectations of what it takes to succeed in the world at large. If we deliberately let our students fail in small ways today, we can help to ensure that they'll triumph in a big way tomorrow.

By Paul T Richardson This is great reading for teachers, administrators, and schools looking to reshape the ways in which they think about assessment, rigor, and promoting student learning. "Freedom to Fail" clearly and effectively discusses the promotion of student learning via Dweck's growth mindset and multiple opportunities to show learning. As a basketball coach and teacher, it is so incredibly essential for students and players to try and try again to master skills and gain experience. Miller keeps the ideas succinct and blends philosophy, research, and an "uncommon" common-sense of the "whys" of assessment smoothly. Great book if you are interested in helping students become fearless learners and excited to investigate new ideas and gain new skills- all the while, embracing failure as a part of the journey, not a judgement on their abilities.

"Community colleges are indeed the community's college. With their open admissions role and increased national, state, and local mandates for greater student retention, persistence, and completion, they are today - more than ever - expected to perform at a high level to serve the most diverse of student populations. The Handbook for Student Affairs in the Community College provides a comprehensive framework of the strengths and challenges facing community colleges of all types. The Handbook serves as an insightful blueprint for success, relying on the learnings from a historical past in order to impact a successful future." --Diana M. Doyle, Ph.D., President , Arapahoe Community College "This pioneering work fills a void in the literature about the work of student affairs and should be on the bookshelf of every student affairs professional. This Handbook paints with primary colors the complexity of the various missions and responsibilities of community colleges and the critical role of student affairs in the success of the most diverse students in higher education. [It] is an excellent resource for those considering a career in student affairs in community colleges." --Gwen Dungy, Executive Director Emeritus, NASPA In addressing the unique issues related to the delivery of student services in the community college setting, this book fills a longstanding need to provide practitioners with a contextual framework for their work. Starting by providing the historical context to the development of student affairs in community colleges, this handbook describes the organization of key functions and current practice, and looks at the specific constraints, opportunities, changes and future challenges that practitioners face.Community colleges are grappling with: the realities of shrinking resources; an increasingly diverse and disparate student body, with many attending part-time; demands for greater accountability; a generational change in leadership; and pressures to expand their missions as well as adopt educational technology – all of which have an impact on the role of student affairs.Among the topics covered are: Partnering with Academic Affairs; Financing Student Affairs; Legal and Policy Issues; Strategic Planning and Assessment; Accreditation and Accountability; Technology for Communication and Engagement; Academic Support Services; Student Life and Student Engagement Programs and Services; Enrollment Management; and Services for Special Populations. This handbook is intended for student affairs administrators and professionals at all stages of their careers, as well as for students in graduate preparation programs.

Review “This book includes chapters on several sub-areas not often seen in the literature directed toward student affairs professionals: Partnering with Academic Affairs; Legal and Policy Issues; and Accreditation and Accountability. It should be required reading for practitioners and students in preparations programs.” (Florence B. Brawer (1922-2014) Research Director of the Center for the Study of Community Colleges from its inception in 1974)"The bulk of the Handbook is a review of what we understand about students and practices of student affairs in four-year colleges and universities. What is significant is that so many of the theories and practices apply to community colleges as well because many of the students have the same characteristics, and for those areas where there might be questions about whether or not some unique aspects of community colleges might call for a different perspective or action, the areas for needed research are clear and poised for study. This pioneering work fills a void in the literature about the work of student affairs and should be on the bookshelf of every student affairs professional. This Handbook paints with primary colors the complexity of the various missions and responsibilities of community colleges and the critical role of student affairs in the success of the most diverse students in higher education. This Handbook is an excellent resource for those considering a career in student affairs in community colleges." They’re the colleges most often selected by older or working-class students, for two reasons; firstly the tuition is affordable, and secondly, they offer an easy commute from home. NYC’s junior and four-year colleges train nurses, paralegals, bookkeepers, and criminal justice graduates who go into law enforcement. Because the community colleges are publicly funded, tuition in usually lower than others, but students may still have trouble paying. After that, you’ll have to deal with remedial needs for special needs students, liabilities, nutrition, and more. HSACC is broken into chapters regarding all issues for students in community colleges, such as Legal and Policy Issues, regarding things like free speech. Where do we draw the line on free speech in a school? What about racist or hateful language? There’s been a Supreme Court case involving Saxe Community College, where Judge Alito wrote “no exemption from free speech, it protects offensive language.” Anybody remember CUNY and the Leonard Jeffries affair in the mid 1990’s? What about the Brooklyn student center named after Assata Shakur? There were many in the city who objected to having a criminal’s name in a city-funded school room. Then we have 4th amendment issues, like searching student bags, or checking their personal laptops for evidence of cheating. Due process has to be observed for all disciplinary actions. There’s almost nothing here about fraternities, athletics, or housing, because those are not the kind of issued you deal with in a community college. The issues in this book are the ones that you deal with in colleges where the students commute, and where the learning is often specific to a career. Each chapter is written by an experienced college administrator, so you can expect to read advice from men and women with industry experience.

I do think, however, this edition needs some proofreading. Here are some examples of typos--1. p 55 the sentence begins "He knowedF enough..." There is that extra "F."2. p 66 "it's a the bear..."3. p 62 "It's size" (should be "Its size..")4. p 92 "asked the policeman Dick." Should be "The policeman asked Dick" or "asked the policeman of Dick," if you wanted.5. p 154 "she" instead of "she's"6. There are a number of instances where there is an extra space by an apostrophe, such as "he' s".As I said, the story is great. But this edition needs revising.

Written obviously as stories to guide a young man not so much by church morals or 1st world financial expectations but by natural instinct and a personal sense of right and wrong. Alger takes the long way around to espouse honesty, encourage an industrious nature, and shed a generous light on the value of critical thinking. Classic for youngsters!

By litehouselady1 Quick read with loads of good information. I could have really used this 10 years ago when I had cards I couldn't pay. As the writer basically put it, there is no quick and easy way out of debit. It is either a slow process with no more spending what you don't have or it will be something that will tank your credit rating for years to come.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The definitive guide to Bulgaria By Katie Hill The Bradt Guide to Bulgaria, written by Dr Annie Kay, is the most comprehensive guide yet to this beautiful, rapidly changing, country in the far South East corner of Europe. Annie is a historian, a tour guide, an ornithologist, a nature lover and now a part-time resident in Bulgaria. Her interests are reflected in the book; there are beautiful colour photographs of buildings, birds and butterflies, explanations of the historical issues facing Bulgaria (eg the Macedonian question), up-to-date maps, tourist and travel information and even a section on how to purchase property in Bulgaria (citing her own flat purchase as a case study). Annie manages to capture the flavour of the people through their culture such that you can imagine the tobacco drying, the traditional costumes, the 'horo' dances and festival days celebrated in the imposing mountains. This book achieves so much more than being a guide for skiers and beach lovers, although they too will be well directed in their holidays. Annie uncovers the variety of delights in Bulgaria - from the gorges and the mountains to the plains and the beaches. I strongly recommend this encyclopaedic book to accompany you if you are to extract the gems on offer in this beautiful, fascinating country.

Ebook PDF Flashbacks from the Flow Zone, by Tom Crago

“I had awoken late that Manhattan morning, shattered, confused, and nursing a hangover born of the kind of bored, incessant drinking that has a habit of accompanying twenty-five-hour journeys, especially those involving three-hour transits through the absurdist morass that was the Tom Bradley terminal at Los Angeles International Airport. It was difficult to blame my alarm clock as I had neglected to set it, and in any event there was no time to point fingers. I was by that stage more than an hour late for the only meeting of moderate substance that I’d scheduled during a three-day stay in New York.” Tom Crago owns and runs a video game development studio in Melbourne, Australia. Flashbacks from the Flow Zone is his love letter to the business trip; a raging, hilarious, anti‐memoir that is all about the ride. Critically acclaimed upon its release in Australia and the UK, Flashbacks from the Flow Zone is also about moments on the road and about how our journeys (big and small) fashion our impressions of cities and their inhabitants. While mourning the end of one travel epoch, the book’s voice is nevertheless buoyant, witty and entirely novel insofar as its focus is squarely upon business travel. And in truth it’s true perspective is narrower still. These are impressions of the view out the window. Tom Crago is not a rock star, or an actor or the playboy heir to an obscene fortune. He’s a guy who puts on a business shirt every day and tries to win work for his company. That company happens to be in the video game industry. And his clients, some of the biggest players in the business, happen to share his view that if a thing’s worth doing, it’s worth doing in some brand of style.

By Marcos I am already CCNA (2 books), CCNP R&S (4 books), CCDA (1 book), CCDP (1 book) and CCNA Security (1 book) certified. The reason why I'm bringing this number is because CCNP Sec SISAS 300-208 was the best Cisco Cert book I've read!#1 - it is fun... the book is very engaging and the flow of the reading is reeeeeeally smooth!#2 - fun is not enough! The CONTENT of the book is really easy to understand, yet crucial for passing the Cert.I've passed my exam today and basically all I used was the book with a Lab (ISE 1.2 + 3560-E switch + PC) to practice.Thank you very much!

There are other Cisco products that this book does not reference or cover that are on the exam. In fairness to the author, some of these other things aren't listed on the exam topics either.

By travis stroebele This book is great - covers all the topics needed for the exam, I like how Aaron throws in some jabs and jokes in the book, if you like security topics then this will keep you going. Took the exam today and did very well main study source was this book and some prior experience with ISE, lots of good stuff in this book!

By Thelma7180 Web Design - Start Here: A No-Nonsense, Jargon Free Guide to the Fundamentals of Web DesignThis is an excellent introduction to webdesign for anybody who wants to learn how to create websites for the real world. It's also a great tool to get those who already know the basics up to current standards. Stefan Mischook focuses on essential parts and only provides the background details that actually matter. No time wasted dissecting frogs, this book takes you directly to the meat of webdesign. The cover says 'A no-Nonsence, Jargon-Free Guide to the Fundamentals of Web Design" and that is exactly what this book delivers.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great introduction to web design By C Great introduction to web designThis is an excellent book anyone who has no programming experience. This book teaches the reader with the skills to build a simple, clean, and professional looking website. The first half of the book covers basic HTML and CSS, while the second hard dives deeper into the topics and fill in the details (HTML5/CSS3).This book is very easy to read and nicely illustrated. Unlike other boring reference type books, advance topics such as CMS (eg. WordPress, Drupal), JavaScript, jQuery, and Bootstrap frameworks are briefly introduced. The author teaches the concepts and relevant technologies to inspire the interested readers to find out more.

The nerd humor, etc. keeps it on the light side, also how many books do you read when you can actually contact the Author, and he (Stefan) gets back to you in a very timely manner. I highly recommend this book. I also recommend Stefan's video lessons.
