Gemma has a chance to see the new store Rory now manages, the Lucky Dog Boutique. She is quite interested when sees how unique and quaint Destiny is – the town is totally absorbed in superstitions – all of them. Not only does Gemma love the town, but the town loves her or at least two men in town do. However, when one of those men turn up dead, she finds herself the prime suspect in the murder. Suddenly, Destiny isn’t looking all that sweet anymore.Rory and her faithful dog, Pluckie, are beyond shocked when they discover one of Gemma’s suitors dead in the park. It was only the previous night when Gemma had a public argument with the deceased. Now, Rory finds herself in the predicament of proving her friend’s innocence. Unfortunately, the man she’s very attracted to is the lead detective on the case and wants her to stay far away from it.I enjoyed my return to Destiny. It’s a cute town filled with different superstitions and quite a bit of information about them for the readers. I had no idea there were so many different superstitions out there. It fascinated me to read about them.Rory is becoming a favorite character of mine. I think it’s realistic how she can’t totally forget her dead fiancé. I want to see her begin a new relationship with the detective, but I think the slowness and “getting to know you” adds to the reality of such a situation. She is a bit too involved in the investigation, but her determination stems from seeing her best friend being accused of the crime. I did think the police focusing on Gemma is a bit much since there is no hard evidence against her, but it worked to keep the plot going. I have to admit, I was totally taken by surprise to see who the culprit turned out to be.I’m becoming a big fan of Linda O. Johnston’s books. I really want to sink my teeth into her backlist. This is a clever story with realistic and well-developed characters. The mystery keeps readers guessing. I can’t wait for my next trip to this town.FTC Disclosure: The publisher and NetGalley provided me with a copy of this book to review for this blog tour. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

Johnston did a good job of casting suspicion on multiple characters By Jen @ booksthathook dot com * This review first appeared on Books That Hook on December 3, 2015*I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.*KNOCK ON WOOD is the second book in the Superstition Mystery series by Linda O. Johnston.Knock on Wood is another book I received a review copy of through Netgalley, but didn’t get it done in time and ended up reading the paperback version. I’m sure it won’t be the last book I read this way; I have a huge backlog of Netgalley books and I much prefer paper over digital.Anyway, this cozy mystery is about Rory, a pet boutique manager, who lives in a strange town called Destiny where most everyone believes in superstitions. Even those who don’t believe pretend that they do so they can capitalize off of it with the tourists. It isn’t clear if any of the things that happen are actually the result of any superstitions. So, while I group this with the paranormal cozies because of the theme, it isn’t necessarily paranormal. Nevertheless, the premise of the Superstition Mystery series is original and interesting.Rory’s friend, Gemma, comes to visit. Gemma’s ex-boyfriend follows her to Destiny, which becomes a problem due to other men competing for Gemma’s attention. Gemma is asked to stay in Destiny and take over the bookstore next door to Rory’s pet boutique. When one of the men who is interested in Gemma is murdered, Gemma becomes the main suspect. Once again, it is up to Rory to prove someone’s innocence. She takes it upon herself to find out who the real killer is. I thought Linda O. Johnston did a good job of casting suspicion on multiple characters. I was kept guessing until the end.My reservations about this series, as expressed in my review of Lost Under Ladder, haven’t changed significantly. I still feel like there is a conflict between what Rory says and does. She claims to be skeptical about superstitions. Yet, her behavior is like that of a believer. Her constant questioning about if everything she encounters or experiences is related to a superstition gets tiresome. I guess this was the author’s way of working in a lot of different superstitions. I just didn’t like how it seemed to conflict with Rory’s claim that she didn’t believe in superstitions. If she didn’t believe in them, why was she obsessing about them all the time? Also, the book takes a long time to get to the murder–96 pages. I can’t say I was bored; I just didn’t know why it was taking so long to get to the murder I knew was bound to happen.Another complaint I had is about Gemma and Rory’s relationship. Rory says Gemma is her “bff” but she doesn’t seem to know Gemma well or communicate very well with her.One of the best aspects of Knock on Wood is the budding relationship between Rory and Justin. It is refreshing to see a romance that takes time to grow. It’s kind of hot and cold, in part because Rory doesn’t know if she is ready to move on after losing her fiance.I’m not sure if I would read another book in this series, but I don’t want to discourage anyone else from reading it. If you can get past Rory’s annoying repetitiveness and obsession with superstitions, you will probably enjoy Lost Under Ladder and Knock on Wood. The mystery is solid and the setting is unique.

By Sapphyria Warning ~~ Potential Book 1 spoilers. When Rory's bff, Gemma, abruptly comes to town to visit earlier than expected, she's happy but knows that something is up. Gemma broke up with her boyfriend, Frank, and just needed to get out of L.A. and away from him. This would be all fine and dandy except Frank follows Gemma to Destiny. In the short time that Gemma is in town, she has caught the eye of two local eligible bachelors. She's also caught the evil eye of Frank who is quasi-stalking Gemma hoping to convince her to come back to L.A. with him. Frank's plans crash and burn when she's offered a managerial position at the bookstore previously owned by two characters from Book 1.The relationship between Gemma and one of her suitors gets heated one evening, at a restaurant, and in front of half of the town. When he's found dead early the next morning, Gemma becomes one of many suspects in his murder. Rory knows beyond a shadow of doubt that Gemma isn't to blame and, much to their dismay, takes it upon herself to help local law enforcement figure it out.I really like both books in the Superstition Mystery series. I'm not superstitious but I still find the various superstitions plastered throughout the book to be fascinating. I already knew about some of them (walking under ladders, breaking mirrors, opening umbrellas inside, knocking on wood) but I'd never heard of most of them.Rory really develops and grows in Knock on Wood, learning to accept the death of her fiancé,Warren, and moving forward with her life. She's still cautious but doesn't continually dwell on the events that lead to Warren's untimely death. She's still curious about the superstition about walking under a ladder but she isn't allowing it to hold her back from what may come with Chief of Police, Justin. There isn't a lot of additional character development with the supporting cast members, which is unfortunate. Rory moved to Destiny without knowing anyone yet was able to easily fit it. We get bits and pieces about those she interacts with the most but it would be interesting to learn more about them and who really believes in the superstitions, that the town relies on for tourism. If you're looking for an easy read, look no further than Linda O. Johnston's Superstition Mystery series. The characters are likable and written with emotion and depth. The mysteries are engaging and the author tosses in a few red herrings to help disguise the true suspect(s). I had fun reading both books in the series and plan to continue reading the series.Review copy courtesy of the publishing company, at no cost, in exchange for an honest review.

Candy Cane Murder, by Leslie Meier, Joanne Fluke, Laura Levine

From Publishers Weekly Three big-name cozy writers contribute candy cane-themed novellas to this entertaining yuletide anthology. Levine's series heroine Jaine Austen (Death by Pantyhose, etc.) spots a wealthy suburbanite's killer in the unfortunately skimpy The Danger of Candy Canes, where the subplot about a troubled teen is more compelling than the actual mystery. Hannah Swensen (Key Lime Pie Murder, etc.) experiments with new Christmas cookies (recipes included, of course) and gets to the bottom of a Santa slaying in Fluke's complex Candy Cane Murder, which includes several plausible suspects and a surprising twist-an impressive feat in just 150 pages. Meier's powerful Candy Canes of Christmas Past takes heroine Lucy Stone (Bake Sale Murder, etc.) back to December 1983, when, newly arrived in Tinker's Cove, Maine, she found herself investigating the circumstances of a decades-old local death and struggling with her own financial and domestic difficulties. Fluke and Meier ably make up for Levine's shortcomings to create a sweet holiday treat for mystery lovers. (Oct.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. 21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Christmas Can Be Murder By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers This is a collection of three Christmas mystery novellas written by three great cozy writers. Starring their series sleuths, they stand alone well enough to be entertaining for any cozy fan looking for some light reading in December.Up first is the title story. "Candy Cane Murder" by Joanne Fluke finds Hannah Swenson playing Santa's helper, literally, at the Lake Eden Inn. Wayne Bergstrom, owner of a local department store, is doing his annual good deed playing Santa for the underprivileged kids in the area. But when leaving the party a little while later, she follows a trail of candy canes to find Wayne's body in a snow bank. Who would want Wayne dead? For a novella mystery, this one is fairly complex. Any of Hannah's numerous fans will love this story. It's a cozy Christmas offering and includes 8 cookie recipes, 2 drink recipes, and 2 quiche recipes.Next comes "The Dangers of Candy Canes" by Laura Levine. I'm a fan of Laura's books so was thrilled to find another story starring freelance writer Jaine Austen. When one of Jaine's clients, Seymour Fiedler of Fiedler on the Roof Roofers, is sued for wrongful death, he hires Jaine to put down her pen and solve the crime. Seems that Garth Jankin fell off his recently reroofed house while decorating for his neighborhood's annual Christmas decorating contest. Since Garth had numerous enemies, Jaine quickly decides that the tiles were loosened. But who would do something like that? As with the books, this story is very funny. A sub-plot about Jaine volunteering with a group that mentors underprivileged girls almost slows the story down at times. But in the end this is a fun read.Even though she's a staple of the cozy sub-genre, I have never read Leslie Meier before. I changed that with the third story, "Candy Canes of Christmas Past." This story takes us back in time to the first Christmas that series star Lucy Stone spent in Tinker Cove, Maine. Lucy is trying to deal with her husband's project, fixing up their home. So when town librarian Miss Tilly is nice to Lucy, Lucy looks for some way to repay her new friend. And that's how she begins trying to uncover the circumstances surrounding Miss Tilly's mother's death almost 50 years before. This story is as much about Lucy's struggles to fit into a new town and live in an old house as it is about the mystery. In fact, this was the weakest mystery of the book by far. But I liked the characters and plan to read the first in the series soon. This story includes 2 recipes, bringing the total for the book to 14.If you love cozies and want to book to put you in the Christmas mood, this is the book for you. Pick it up and enjoy today.

However, this book was the exception. I loved it! Hannah was in her usual keen sleuthing mode. I liked how the second short story referred back to Joanne's story and recipes. I am especially thrilled to be introduced to Leslie Meier. I enjoyed her story and I plan to read more of her books.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Candy Canes, Warm and Comfortable By Andrea This is one of the most wonderful, charming, interesting, and fun books that I have ever read. I was very satisfied when I finished it. This book is three books in one, by three different authors. All three books are fun, very well-written, clever, and entertaining."Candy Cane Murder" by Joanne Fluke:The first book is by Joanne Fluke. Anybody who reads my reviews knows how crazy I am over the Hannah Swensen series, and this book is no exception. This book starts out with Hannah at the Christmas party, dressed up as an elf. They are having a dinner and invited the children at the children's home. Hannah has a bucket of miniature candy canes for the children, and is looking forward to making candy cane cookies with the leftovers. When leaving the party, Hannah and her sisters find a miniature candy cane. . . Hannah also finds a body. I will not say more about the candy cane because I do not want to ruin the book. There are lots of clever clues and fun adventures. The final solving of the mystery is very interesting and clever. And the recipes really look good. On a scale of 1 to 5, a hundred stars would not be enough for Joanne Fluke's part."The Dangers of Candy Canes" by Laura Levine:While putting a huge, decorative neon candy cane on a roof, the person falls off because a shingle is loose. Was the roofer negligant in making sure the shingle was in place, or did someone deliberately loosen the shingle? Jaine is determined to find out. She goes on some interesting investigative adventures until she finds out who did it. The mystery solving was interesting. This book was fun and funny. I had never read anything by this author before. By itself, this book would definitely have been 5 stars. Actually, a lot more than that. Five stars would not have been enough."Candy Canes of Christmas Past" by Leslie Meier:Lucy, the main character, reflects on her first Christmas in Tinkers Cove, Maine as a young wife and mother. She makes friends with Miss Tilley and Sue Finch (and others). A glass candy cane makes Miss Tilley remember the death of her mother, which was many years ago. I will not say how the candy cane makes her remember, because I do not want to ruin the book for those who haven't read it. Lucy solves her first mystery that year: she solves the mystery of Miss Tilley's mother's death, even though it was many years ago. I enjoyed the mystery solving; it was really clever.I love the atmosphere of this book. Lucy is taken back in time when she was a struggling new wife and mother. Her little boy, Toby, is sweet and adorable. Their house needs a lot of costly repairs. Even though those times seem hard and bad, those were actually the "good ole days". I know this because I have been reading the Lucy Stone series, and as the series progresses, and the kids get older, and Lucy and her husband are doing better financially, the atmosphere isn't quite as good and sentimental. But this story is more like one of the original books of the series, back when it was one of my favorite series. On a scale of 1 to 5, a hundred stars are not enough. This entire book as a whole:This is one of the best books I've ever read. All 3 novellas were wonderful, clever, fun, interesting, and entertaining. If you like fun, warm, comfortable cozy mysteries, I highly recommend this book.

By Donna feibusch I enjoyed reading The Billionaire's Fantasy - Part 2(The Forbidden Series), all about Louise Jensen the Professor of Women's Studies at Columbia University & Jaiven Rodrieguez the founder & CEO of JR Shipping. The two meet in part 1 at her sisters Engagement party, and have been seeing each other ever since. In part 2 Louise decides she really likes Jaiven and can't get him out of her head, and goes to see him at his home in the Bronx. Jaiven is very excited that Louise is still pursuing him, because he also has feelings for her, because she is different then all the other women, and he's starting to care! This is. Foreign concept for him, and her because both have had terrible things happen to them in their past, and neither can seem to move forward, but neither one knows about the others baggage! The author wrote a great series, and the characters make the individual parts come to life! Read part 2 and it will make you laugh, cry, sigh, shake your head and cum a lot! I can't wait to read part 3 & 4.

As a newby to the education field, this book revealed plenty of options to start earning extra cash early on before getting so deep into education that I forget about my own financial needs. By Martha Parks I found this book highly informative, especially as a teacher on a beginning teacher's salary. Multiple suggestions were provided and all of them were within reach and doable by the average person. I especially appreciated the links that were provided, which made further research and investigation a snap. I am ready to start supplementing my income now! Thanks Carlos!

This book represents one photographer's effort to share his personal perspective of Africa's wildlife heritage. Drawing on his vast collection of photographs from hundreds of safaris in Eastern Africa over the past five decades, Dinesh Patel has successfully made the African safari universally accessible. What distinguishes the book from the myriad others are two striking features. First, is its simplicity and purity-the wildlife photography in the book is uncomplicated and pure, capturing snapshots of the wild as it is intended to be, devoid of human factors. Second, building on this simplicity, unfettered with commentary, the photographer has successfully created a world that gives the reader an experience of being there, accompanying the photographer as he moves on his journey. Whether these photographs are viewed with awe or admired for their majesty, they convey an important message. The African wilderness is in rapid retreat. Too many of the creatures exhibited here are on the lamentable list of endangered species and face a bleak future. So the challenge ahead is serious and the task difficult but essential. Africa needs a future that befits its unique place in the grandeur of nature. By nurturing these natural jewels and by playing to its strengths-its unique and spectacular wild legacy-Africa must become prosperous by preserving its heritage. It is the essential duty of the wildlife photographer to spread this message by conveying the spectacle and magnificence of Africa's wild wonders. Dinesh Patel has accomplished this task with distinction.

Linden McGregor is tall, rugged, and gunslinger handsome - a helicopter pilot with a Scottish brogue and charm to spare. He's also one of Stephanie Robson's best friends and has fit into that box for as long as she's known him.

Beautiful, funny, and an ambitious businesswoman, Stephanie Robson is one of Linden McGregor's best friends and has fit into that box for as long as he's known her. But some relationships can't be boxed, can't be classified, can't be tamed.

Back in their mid-20s and tired of the competitive hit-or-miss dating scene of San Francisco, Steph and Linden made a pact to marry each other if neither one of them were in a serious relationship by the time they hit 30.

It sounded like fun and games at the time, but as the years to 30 tick past and lovers come and go out of their lives, the pact becomes larger than life.

Sex is inevitable. Friendships are tested. Hearts are on the line. The pact is about to change everything.

I wish so badly that I had waited until the reviews came out before purchasing it but I never thought I'd dislike a Karina Halle romance.Story goes as follows:Warning spoilers1. First 43% of the book the H/h are both sleeping with other people or in a relationship with someone else. We barely get any actual scenes of them together as friends for the reader to at least believe in this incredible "friendship"2. 45%-79% H/h are together in secret but all we get are cringe-worthy love scenes with the most horrendous dialogue. Mind you they have to hide their relationship from her ex boyfriend/ their mutual best friend just in case he still loves her after not having been together for 6 years. *Rolls Eyes*3. 79% Heroines ex/ both of their best friends pulls a psycho douche move and hero instantly drop kicks heroine (that he's been waiting for the chance to have for 9 years) to the curb.4. Separated for remainder of book.5. Insert life threatening situation.6. Hero offers pathetic excuse for an apology/grovel7. HEA

48 of 58 people found the following review helpful. Routine love story with preposterous plot twist By Alan A. Elsner Stephanie and Linden, who are "best friends" and are both turning 25, make a pact: if neither is married and neither in a committed relationship by the time they turn 30, they will get married to each other. Of course, we the readers know they are made for one another. But they will have to go through a whole bevvy of rather silly complications before the happy ending. That's OK and the sex, which as usual is earth-shattering and mind-blowing, eventually helps convince them that they belong together. But this book grew tiresome to this reader because of the obstacle that arises to their love -- which is laughable. Linden is best friends with Jason who once dated Stephanie and thinks he's still in love with her. Linden is quite a gentleman (and of course he has a Scottish accent and a penchant at key moments of making delivering long declarations of love that make Hamlet's soliloquies seem short and pithy by comparison). We're asked to believe that in order to keep his precious friendship with Jason (who is an ass) he's ready to sacrifice the love of his life with Stephanie. Who would do that? Who in the world would dump the love of their life and the best sexual partner in the history of the world since Adam and Eve for a drinking buddy?Linden eventually wises up as we know he must. But if I were Stephanie, I would be careful. Ten years down the road, this is the kind of guy who will prefer to spend his evenings in some sleazy sports bar with his loser buddies over staying home with his wife and three kids.

The Pact is a beautiful friends to lovers story thats fun By Christy Baldwin BBU The Pact is a beautiful friends to lovers story thats fun, sweet, sexy and a little angsty. When I think of books like this, Karina Halle isn’t the author I picture writing them. She does action and suspense, she does raw and gritty, she does emotion to the extreme, and she does all that very well. But guess what? Karina Halle is one of those authors that can write anything. That is some true talent. The Pact is a different type of book for her, but it happens to be one of my favorites she’s written. The Pact is a story about two best friends in their mid twenties. Linden and Steph. Marrying your best friend if neither of you are seriously committed by the time your thirty seems like a good plan, right?Through the years, this couple goes through it all. They both have serious and not so serious relationships. They have their ups and downs. Stephanie takes a big leap with her career and Linden is right by her side- her primary source of support. No matter what happens between them, one thing remains the same. They are best friends.Thirty is right there. They are both seeing someone. A trip between friends. Linden, Stephanie, their other best friend James and all the significant others. And a game of truth or dare.Feelings come out. Things change. The pact is still in effect?Okay, this is one of those books. One of those books where I LOVE both the hero and the heroine equally. How often does that happen? Not very often for me. Stephanie was an incredible heroine. I adored her. Her confidence, her strength, she was a fabulous friend and fun and spunky. Then there was my dear Linden. He was just wonderful. I loved how hard he loved his baby blue. Even though he didn’t always know what to do or how to express himself, he always had the best intentions at heart. While these two are discovering who they are and what they want, they are also discovering that maybe friendship isn’t the only thing between them. Maybe they can have it all. Just maybe, The Pact they made all those years ago could turn into the real thing. But there is something- or someone who makes it difficult.I can imagine that falling hard for your best friend has to be one of the scariest things to do. You are risking so much if things don’t work out. It’s not just a broken heart. Losing that one person that you count on to always be there for you, who loves you no matter what. It’s scary. But sometimes love is worth the risk. This is one of my favorite contemporary romances I’ve read this year. I loved this spin on the classic friends to lovers story. Both of the characters were amazing. I loved that it was light and fun, but had just enough heavy and angst to keep my heart racing and get me worked up. It was super sexy and steamy and just an all round great read. If you’re looking for a fresh standalone romance with captivating writing, lovable characters and an ending that will leave you smiling for days, pick this one up! It’s going straight to my favorites list!

Praise for Overloaded and Underprepared

“Parents, teachers, and administrators are all concerned that America’s kids are stressed out, checked out, or both—but many have no idea where to begin when it comes to solving the problem. That’s why the work of Challenge Success is so urgent. It has created a model for creating change in our schools that is based on research and solid foundational principles like communication, creativity, and compassion. If your community wants to build better schools and a brighter future, this book is the place to start.”—Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive and A Whole New Mind

“Challenge Success synthesizes the research on effective school practices and offers concrete tools and strategies that educators and parents can use immediately to make a difference in their communities. By focusing on the day-to-day necessities of a healthy schedule; an engaging, personalized, and rigorous curriculum; and a caring climate, this book is an invaluable resource for school leaders, teachers, parents, and students to help them design learning communities where every student feels a sense of belonging, purpose, and motivation to learn the skills necessary to succeed now and in the future.”—Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education, Stanford University

“Finally, a book about education and student well-being that is both research-based and eminently readable. With all the worry about student stress and academic engagement, Pope, Brown and Miles gently remind us that there is much we already know about how to create better schools and healthier kids. Citing evidence-based ‘best practices’ gleaned from years of work with schools across the country, they show us what is not working, but more importantly, what we need to do to fix things. Filled with practical suggestions and exercises that can be implemented easily, as well as advice on how to approach long-term change, Overloaded and Underprepared is a clear and compelling roadmap for teachers, school administrators and parents who believe that we owe our children a better education.”—Madeline Levine, co-founder Challenge Success; author of The Price of Privilege and Teach Your Children Well

“This new book from the leaders behind Challenge Success provides a thorough and balanced exploration of the structural challenges facing students, parents, educators, and administrators in our primary and secondary schools today. The authors’ unique approach of sharing proven strategies that enable students to thrive, while recognizing that the most effective solutions are tailored on a school-by-school basis, makes for a valuable handbook for anyone seeking to better understand the many complex dimensions at work in a successful learning environment.”—John J. DeGioia, President of Georgetown University

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. A great guide for schools and parents By TR13 This is a great guide for schools trying to reign in a system that is failing our kids. They are overworked, stressed, and depressed. I enjoyed the book as a parent because it helps me see how I can help my son succeed as he enters middle school. And it gives me ideas to share with my school's administrators and teachers. My son's school has been slowly implementing some of the changes proposed by Challenge Success and I strongly advocate that they keep going. The homework load is still too much, but was lowered last year and my son's SAT-10 scores were higher than ever. More homework does not improve grades! Engaged students simply do better. My school also added in more critical thinking questions on tests, and projects instead of tests, with great results. Another great book to read is "How to Raise an Adult" by Julie Lythcott-Haims.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. but specific ideas and tools to better our children's lives By Bookworm Finally! Overloaded and Underprepared is a guide to help our students and our schools. Not just an explanation of what plagues us, but specific ideas and tools to better our children's lives, and help keep them healthy and engaged in learning. From "saner" scheduling tools, to making "homework work" guidelines, this book is not afraid to get into the nitty gritty and take a stand for healthier and more practical policies in our schools and our homes. Great information for teachers, administrators, and parents, I highly recommend this important and practical book for anyone who is concerned with our society's current over-emphasis on grades and test scores.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Just in time - guidance from the pros! By Alexandra Given all the recent media attention highlighting the pressures that students are under, its quite timely that this incredible resource is available for educators, parents, and those who champion youth. While many people have ideas about what works, the best ideas come from those who are on the ground making change happen. The team at Challenge Success knows what they are taking about as the group is grounded in research and rooted in a diverse array of schools nationwide. This is a terrific read for anyone interested in shifting the paradigm towards a more healthy, exciting, and truly educational world for kids. We owe them the chance to have a childhood and young adulthood that is unencumbered by the unnecessary stresses they face today. You won't be disappointed with this read.

Sacred to Secular is a rational call for Australia to adopt the successful Scandinavian model and become a 'fully secular' nation that is religion-neutral. It is also an incisive analysis of Christianity -- its origins, how it remains embedded in society, and the harm it continues to inflict. It exposes the threats of predatory evangelism in education, and of 'corporate Christianity' in the social and political environment. There is no argument against 'personal and private' faith, but it does analyse 'politicised Christianity' that influences the media and undermines Australia's contemporary social agenda. All this leads to positive conclusions, realistic options, and a blueprint for action. The author's media and publicity expertise is directed towards workable suggestions to achieve a variety of secular solutions.

Morris is particularly good at tracing the neurological and social origins of religion By Cliff Mills This is a commendably deep probe of religion, from the earliest days of people sitting around the cave fire in furs, up to the “modern” age when many of the old superstitions have survived intact. Morris is particularly good at tracing the neurological and social origins of religion. He got me thinking hard about where it comes from and the reasons it survives. Not content with mere analysis, Morris shows us the rationalist alternative and how it works in the progressive nations of Northern Europe. Why is Australia such a laggard? How can the country get rid of the habitual kow-towing to religious institutions and a non-secular education system? This writer has convincing answers, plus some great action ideas.

Points up the archaic influences of religion on our parliamentary system and its power to subvert clear thinking secularism and rationality to a fawning, 'politically correct' pseudo-values world view.Rabid Christians, agnostics, atheists and anyone who wonders why 'Christian-speak' and its influence on their world is so far-reaching, needs to read this book. An important publication for NOW!!

Australia and religion 101 By d b slatyer this book should be the sylabus text book for any one studying religion and compulsory for everyone else .I found it challenging to read the first time and could only cope with about 20 pages at a time . mainly because I got so angry and depressed about australia’s future and australians in general . and also there is so much to think about , you need a break to absorb and think about what you have just read .in reading the book a 3rd time I now have time to follow the extensive references and source material . the references are very easy to find and there are also internet links on the website [...]it is an engrossing , easy to read book that also doubles as a great reference book .

Douglas Armstrong is in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to construct the tallest building in the world - and to prove to his father that he's capable to take over the company. The last thing he needs is a babysitter controlling his every decision about the construction project. Antonia Barkin travels the world as a consultant, protecting the investments of her employer, the biggest bank in Asia. While she loves her life on the road, she's grown tired of starting over every few weeks. She begins to wonder if there's something else that could fill the void in her heart. A void, she never admitted to have - until now. When they meet, they do their best to fight their attraction for each other. For a thousand good reasons, this can never work out, or can it? This is the fourth book in the Armstrong series. Every book in this 6-book big family contemporary romance series contains a complete love story without cliffhangers and can be read as stand-alone. Follow each sibling on his or her path to a happily ever after, and meet again characters from previous stories in each new book. All my books contain steamy scenes, deep emotions, humor and adventure. Sergeant Oliver Martinez joined the military to serve his country—not plan parties. But after a run-in with his commanding officer, Oliver is suddenly responsible for the Alpha Dog Training Program's upcoming charity event. Worse, he's got to work with the bossiest, sexiest woman he's ever met—who just happens to be the general's daughter.

When it comes to military men, Evelyn Reynolds is not interested. And with the opportunity to launch her new PR firm at the charity event, she doesn't have time for some sexy, arrogant jerk with a hero complex. Evelyn is determined to keep things professional—if only she can ignore how Oliver's muscles fill out a t-shirt and the infuriating way he makes her heart pound.

But when tempers flare and a scorching kiss turns into so much more, Oliver and Evelyn will have to decide if this attraction is forever…or just for now.

She has swore to herself never to date someone who doesn't have time for her including anyone in the military. She wants someone with a regular 8-5 job. Meeting Sergeant Oliver Martinez makes her want to throw caution to the wind for a chance to be happy. Too bad the general is not in agreement.I loved everything about this novella. It's the perfect beginning of a series. I know I won't miss any of the future books.Evie and Oliver had great chemistry. Their story was full of banter, great supportive characters, awesome animals and sexy times. Just the perfect combo! It took me just one second to fall in love with Beast. As a side note, Mrs Gary got all the Spanish phrases right."There is nothing I don't like-like about you."Cliffhanger: No5/5 like- like Fangs

Oliver Martinez has to do a stint in the Alpha Dogs Training Program because he stopped a bit too energetically his General’s son in a bar brawl. Oliver will be working in public relations, which is not his forte, but worst of all, his superior will be the General’s daughter, Evelyn Tate. Oliver is seriously attracted to Evelyn, who tries her hardest not to respond to Oliver’s advances; Evelyn has sworn to never get involved with a military man, but can she resist?I NEED A HERO is a lovely romance, where the characters have issues, but nothing is convoluted. Ms. Gary’s writing is very smooth, and so is the story. I really felt the chemistry between Oliver and Evelyn; in fact, everything rings true in I NEED A HERO. I have been a fan of Codi Gary for a good while, and I think this is her best book so far. I loved Oliver and Evelyn; they are very engaging characters, and you cannot but root for their Happy Ever After. I cannot wait for the next book in what promises to be a very exciting series! Brava, Ms. Gary!I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

She is extremely messy, very bossy, stubborn and independent but still very close to her father. She wants a stable man, one who comes home at night and is in a "safe" profession.Sergeant Oliver Martinez is a badass MP Sergeant. All he wants is to help people. He's very sassy and arrogant and he's not a bit shy. He sees what he wants and goes for it, consequences be damned. So, He got into a bar fight and is being punished by being sent to Alpha Dog Training Program to help with publicity for a charity event. She's the event coordinator and his boss. It was an instant attraction on both their parts, but she fights it because he is military. I could feel the chemistry in the room with them! Alpha Dog Training Program is a two-part rehabilitation and rescue. They have troubled teens that are sent there to train rescue dogs to become military dogs. The Adult trainers are buddies of his and they give him a dog to train. Beast is an adorable pit bull that has been abandoned by his previous owners. Let's just say Beast gives him a run for his money, that's for sure! This is my first time to read Codi Gary. I love reading about military men though so I picked it up. Her writing style is a bit different than I usually read. Her characters tell it like it is in a very clear everyday language. Having been around military men for the past 14 years, I know they have a way of speaking that other men don't. It's very clear that she has their lingo and attitude down to a T. Although I call suspect that a Sergeant would report to a General as that's way up in the chain of command, it didn't detract from the story at all. The supporting characters were interesting and engaging. I'm going to add the rest of the series to my TBR.* Referred to my husband and he said, yes, it is possible to report to a General so, please, disregard that. :)*I received a review copy of this book from NetGalley . This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
