Canvas is arguably the best learning management system out there for creating online courses. It’s a thoroughly modern platform, designed from the ground up to meet the needs of both teachers and learners. As a teacher, Canvas’ tools provide you with great variety and flexibility in how you structure a course, deliver content, and both interact with and assess your learners.

But all this power and flexibility can make creating a Canvas course an overwhelming experience. With all those tools and features, there are countless ways to approach a course. You might not know where to start.

Fortunately, you don’t need to spend the time to learn every Canvas tool to create an effective course. In fact, a course built with basic tools and a simple structure can be even more effective than a complex one because it allows you and your students to focus your energy on engaging with the course content and each other, rather than on the tools.

This guide is designed to show you step-by-step just how to create and conduct a simple, high-quality course. I’ll show you how to creatively use a minimum number of tools to easily create a course with all the essential functions of more complex courses.

The guide covers all the needed skills for building and carrying out your first course:

  • Identifying course goals, outcomes, and activities
  • Uploading documents and other content files to the course
  • Creating assignments, discussion topics, and quizzes
  • Adjusting user account and course settings
  • Creating an effective online course syllabus
  • Copying content between courses
  • Communicating with students using Announcements and Conversations
  • Participating in discussion topics
  • Assessing student work and providing feedback using SpeedGrader and Gradebook

Throughout the guide, I’ve also included summaries and links to tutorials on nearly all of Canvas’ more advanced features. After completing the guide, you’ll have the foundation for incorporating all of these advanced activities into future courses.

With degrees in media and educational technology, and over 20 years’ experience as an educator, I’ve worked with all age levels in a variety of learning environments, providing me with an invaluable foundation for understanding and applying effective teaching and learning practices. As an instructional designer, I’ve created and consulted in the development of countless Canvas courses. This book is an opportunity for me to share with you what I’ve learned from my own experience.

Whether you’re creating your first online course, migrating an existing online course from another platform to Canvas, or are a Canvas veteran looking for a simpler way to build and implement effective courses, this guide is for you!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Helpful resource! By K. Self My school system decided this summer to move to Canvas for a variety of other LMS systems. I was a "power user" of Moodle on my campus and was having difficulty figuring out a few of the features of Canvas that I needed to help me transition. A colleague found this book and send me the link. I have found it very helpful and have followed his advice of starting with the syllabus page and hiding most of the other links. Genius idea! I think navigation will be much easier for my students. I use this for a blended learning environment. I recommend this book to others as a good guide to getting up and running when you start using Canvas. It helped me lose my frustration with this transition.

She loves him unconditionally but his lifestyle isn’t something she could put up with. Can love conquer their struggles? Will they survive as a couple? You will find the answers once you read. It’s a good series. This series is a series of short books. The storyline has an beginning and an end to each book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. GREAT READ By Nicki Ervin Wow I don't know where to begin with part 3. Sean was so wrong for what he did. Jealousy is the worst trait to have. Nisha is every bit of her mother and Cree all over again when they were younger. They road for their man and she is doing the same when it comes to Rambo. I believe that Rambo and the twins want to give their father a chance, but they don't want to relive the past. Hopefully they can put all ill feelings aside and build a relationship with him. Ty should focus on building with them before he tries to fix anything with Cree because I feel that if he doesn't the relationship with his kids may never happen. Those twins are too funny. Their attitudes are off the hook. They gave that man a run for his money. Lol. I can't wait until book 4 to find out what happens between Nisha and Rambo as well as Ty, Cree and their children.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Love this short series By Aciandra Ivey Author Shantay I liked it!!! But the ending had me like "What do she mean Rambo and Neisha are going to have some problems?" Lol!!! The twins are something else, but I can understand bc they are only going by what Cree told them. I can see Ram & Ty bumping heads bc they are just a like and plus Ram is a man now. I think they should give Ty a chance and I think he's going to break Cree down. Great short series!!! Can't wait for pt. 4

Although I took it off the Kindle when I was done, I made sure to keep a copy in cloud for future review.

We forget appointments, names, phone numbers, etc. It seems like it gets harder to concentrate with every passing day. This book allows you to check yourself, by monitoring your own behaviors and patterns, to see if you can fix the simpler things that might be wrong with your memory. The book delves into symptoms that you may have that could indicate a more complicated problem. These are good things to be looking for, and should be taken seriously. The book then moves into exercises that can be done to boost your recall, with pictures and keywords. Things like diet, sleep and stress are also addressed in the book. I especially liked the suggestions for different “brain-games” that can be used to keep your mind active, by constantly challenging yourself to remember things a certain way. The use of the Method of Loci, and the ideas about getting organized to reduce clutter in your mind were a nice, fresh twist on the topic. The physiological information was extremely powerful as well. Great book. I highly recommend for anyone with interest in this area.

Movies like 50 First Dates and The Notebook really put the importance of memory into perspective. This was a interesting read for me. It covers topics like: What memory is, approaches for improving memory, causes of poor memory, how memory works, interesting facts and stories about memory, games for improving memory, and more. It even goes into the future and the use of memory chips! Recommended read for anyone looking to improve themselves.

Preparing to marry a man she doesn’t love, getting kidnapped the night of her engagement party is the last thing Ambra Hathaway expects. She hasn’t seen her stepbrother in three years, since the night Ethan Cartwright turned down her clumsy attempt at seduction. Why has he taken her now? Could it really be because he’s been in love with her all this time and was just waiting for her to be old enough to claim as his? She has two days to find out—and do her best to withstand his anything-but-clumsy seduction attempts. This is a standalone story with no cliffhangers. (Previously published under a different pen name and title.)

By April R Symes I received an ARC copy from the author in exchange for my honest review. This was a wild ride from beginning to end--Ambra Hathaway started the night going to her engagement party, one her step father had arranged for her. She didn’t love the man she was engaged to but to save her step father and his business, she would marry the devil himself. She went to go down to her engagement party and one minutes all is ok and next, she is kidnapped from the party by her step brother , Ethan Cartwright, who she hasn’t seen in over 3 years. One who once she told how much she loved, he disappeared out of her life. Oh the confrontation by Ambra over Ethan “kidnapping” her and whisking her off in a limo was great The scenes when they get to Ethan’s home were classic SB writing and I couldn’t get enough of the H/h lines. There is some back story as to why Ethan stayed away and there are some really great bedroom scenes between Ethan and Ambra which is what makes this a great SB book. This is a standalone and has a wonderful epilogue which, as a reader, I very much appreciated. I think only thing I would have liked is maybe to have had a quick page or two of a young Ethan and Ambra to show them to get a glimpse of them in love before the story goes right into where she is kidnapped but that is IMO. Otherwise this is a great story and I cannot wait for the next one.My rating: 4.6 stars *****

I really like the story line and characters....Ethan and Ambra. I wasn't too keen on the fact that he "loved" her but hadn't been celibate over the 3 years they had been apart.....him waiting for her to "grow up." She did give him 2 days to prove himself which I would have loved that type of proving! I have ready pretty much everything written by Stephanie Brother and can honestly say I have been disappointed yet. If you are looking for a good book and a short read then I definitely recommend!

Previously in love with him, but with a commitment to the company and marry another, what is a girl to do?Thanks KU

I was relieved to read that the difficulties we were having at home were consistent with so many others and reading this book gave me clear understanding of what we needed to do fast. Things Unsaid: A Novel, by Diana Y. Paul

Review "Would you do everything humanly possible to maintain your parents’ comfort and lifestyle, even if that comes at the expense of your own family? Things Unsaid by Diana Paul is a powerful, emotional tale that takes the reader deep into the complex dynamics of a dysfunctional family, alternating between love and obligation. Paul expertly entwines the past and present while exploring Julia’s moral impasse between love and duty for her two families―the one she was born into and the one she has created as an adult."―Ica Iova, Readers Favorite, 5-star review“Things Unsaid is a powerfully written story that explores the moral dilemma of love, duty, and sacrifice for the family you are born into versus the family you create as an adult. Jules, the well-etched protagonist, seeks to find her way through the tangled tentacles of her mother’s narcissism, her father’s weakness, and her siblings’ secrets and selfishness. This tale of relationships grabs you on the first page and stays with you long after you’ve read the last words.”—Matilda Butler, author of Rosie's Daughters“At first blush it appears to be a classic dysfunctional-family novel. Yet Things Unsaid is written by a scholar of Buddhism. And so, under its skin, it is a lively, accessible meditation on redemption, and on the transformative value of good intention and deed.” —Rebecca Coffey, author of Hysterical: Anna Freud's Story“A satisfying and provocative read, Things Unsaid is wisely contemplated, meticulously detailed, and powerfully and artfully rendered. A wonderful book, well worth your attention.”—Tom Parker, author of Small Business and Anna Ann Annie“A bold and poignant story that brings deep insights into the messy and complicated world of family relationships, and shows how one woman is able to survive them with her sanity and spirit intact.” —Wendy Nelson Tokunaga, author of Love in Translation and His Wife and Daughters“In a carefully crafted cautionary tale, Diana Paul writes a story of a family that could be anyone's family…In gripping detail, Paul unravels the threads that once bound these individuals together. Family ties are stressed to the breaking point. A crisis of health for some, relationship for others, and self-awareness for Jules, culminates in the realization of the toll that ill-placed priorities can take. Jules is forced to confront the difficult issue of choosing between the family she was born into and the one she created as an adult. Moral dilemmas, emotional roller-coasters, sacrifice and duty abound in this tense novel that exposes raw human emotion―sparing no one the pain that comes with such issues.”—Lee Ambrose, reviewer, Story Circle Book Reviews, www.storycirclebookreviews.org/reviews/thingsunsaid.shtml“Things Unsaid is a raw and candid look into the life of one family dealing with blow after blow. Struggling to be there for their aging parents makes being there for their own families difficult.... Family is never easy to deal with, elderly family is even more difficult. Things Unsaid tells of the tightrope act that is fulfilling familial duty and obligation.”—Maggie Franz, Black Dog Speaks“Diana Paul’s novel Things Unsaid dissects family and generational relationships not only from the traditional storytelling perspective―and she tells a compelling story―but also from the wellspring of her philosophical beliefs.”—Darrell Laurent, Snowflakes in a Blizzard“I was hooked on the story as it unfolded and found it hard to put down. It's well written, for a start, with plenty of attention to detail and a strong sense of place. The characters are amazingly well drawn. It's almost as though Paul has written about people she knows, she gets into their innermost thoughts and feelings so well . . . Then I discovered she has a degree in psychology and philosophy. Perhaps that has something to do with her ability to get inside the heads of these people and understand their motivations. I wanted to get hold of Jules and give her a good shaking, and was expecting one of the children or grandchildren to stand up and give this ghastly couple some home truths. But it's not to be, and the couple never quite get Jules’s dilemma in this charade.”—Diane Paul, Bookblog for Bookworms“The scenes played out on the pages of this story are intense. The reader feels the desire to sit down with Jules and shake some sense into her. The author expertly places us in the midst of a very dysfunctional family. Rating: 4 out of 5.”—Diane Coto, reviewer, Fiction Zeal“While it seems instinctual and right to take care of our parents, Ms. Paul forces us to reconsider. What if our parents have made life awful for us? What if they insist that they be put first every time, even to the detriment of our lives? Diana Paul is a good writer, and despite my difficulty with the characters, the story itself is compelling. While the story is fictional, it serves as an important reminder that we all deserve to have good people in our lives, who love and support us just as we do for them.”—Lindsey Stefan, LiteraryLindsey.com“Paul presents a solidly-written cast of characters who are relatable in their imperfections and sense of duty to both their blood and created families. Readers are sure to recognize at least a trace of their own family dynamic. Paul chose not to make any of her characters full-on slacker types, or ne’er-do-wells. Rather, they are flawed and completely relatable individuals, which makes the story all the more compelling.”—Sara Hodon, Compulsive Reader

About the Author Diana Y. Paul was born in Akron, Ohio and is a graduate of Northwestern University, with a degree in both psychology and philosophy, and of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, with a PhD in Buddhist studies. She is the author of three books on Buddhism, one of which has been translated into Japanese and German (Women in Buddhism, University of California Press), and her short stories have appeared in a number of literary journals. She lives in Carmel, CA with her husband and two cats, Neko and Mao.

Things Unsaid By Susan R The baby boomers in America today are faced with the same dilemma as the characters in this book - how do they juggle taking care of their aging parents and their families and children at the same time and not go totally crazy themselves. Adding to the problem in this novel is that these parents have always treated their children terribly but the adult children still feel guilt over how to care for their parents.Robert and Aida have three children - Jules, their oldest daughter who feels the most responsible for her parents; Andrew, the only son who hasn't visited in over five year and Joanne, the spoiled youngest daughter. Aida is probably one of the most narcissistic characters that I've read in a long time and if the reader thinks this is just a trait that develops as she grows older, there are lots of flashbacks to earlier times that show that she has always been this way. Robert is weak and didn't do much to take care of his family except provide his income. Their bills are mounting in their retirement home and they expect Jules to bail them out. Problem is that Jules has a husband and daughter at home and is maxing out their future to take care of her parents. This is an extremely well written thought provoking book. I enjoyed the way the author opened up the characters little by little throughout the story. There were several characters that I didn't like at all but they were an integral part of the story that needed to be told. Overall, it left a great question that the reader needs to answer for themselves - it is more important to take care of our aging parents or the family that we create when we start our own lives?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Soul Searching Family Drama Story - A++ By Jennifer Dwight This wry, wise novel about coming to terms with conflicting family obligations in middle age also addresses the roles that pain and loss can play in awakening people, and in healing dysfunctional family patterns. Told in the third person, the protagonist is Jules, the oldest of three offspring of an unhappy marriage between an outspoken, Narcissistic drama queen and her disillusioned physician husband. In spare, Hemmingway-like prose, each character is artfully developed to expose not only flaws and foibles, but the root causes thereof, giving the reader a rich appreciation of each person’s motivations. The parents’ financial collapse and precipitous physical decline press upon Jules’s sense of duty and yearning to do the right thing, but also places her in a hot box between caring for her parents and fulfilling the needs of her teenage daughter and long-suffering husband. Expertly written with restraint and irony, the reader is reminded that although we may have little control over life events, we are the lords of our own thoughts, decisions and behavior. When we choose to live our own truths and change old habits, we free not only ourselves but also other family members from unhelpful, static patterns. A deeply engaging book, filled with compassion. Wonderful!

You think you've got problems By Tobi "Things Unsaid" chronicles the growth and development of a very dysfunctional family through the years and touches on some of the most important Issues of our modern society. It was a wonderful read. I didn't want to put it down. It reminded me of some of the same weird dynamics I have in my own family of origin.Ms. Paul tells her story through vignettes of family run-ins over the years, and the interrelations of the various characters. She presents the information and allows the reader to form his/her own opinion of the character. The main character, Jules, struggles with her sometimes debilitating Co-dependence problems which lead her to eventually face her control demons and live her life in honesty. Her changes cause ripples in the family structure which affects each member differently. When faced with a common problem which requires their joint cooperation, will the family fall apart from the stress or will they pull together like the close family they all profess to be?Read this fine first novel and find out.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Detention Center 6 Krasnoyarsk, SiberiaAlexander Grodovich sat on his bunk and watched as the four men squirmed on the bed next to the door. The others huddled in a semicircle. Two of the burlier ones held the new prisoner facedown on the bed, the man's pants bunched around his ankles, his buttocks exposed. Oleg, the chief tattoo artist of Krasnoyarsk, flashed a gap-toothed grin at Grodovich as he dipped the makeshift needle into the cup of ink and bent over the prone man. Oleg pinched the soft, flabby skin between his forefinger and thumb and began the quick piercing that would imbue the ink onto the man's buttocks. The picture of a huge, open eye and partial nostril seemed to stare back at Grodovich. He felt no pity for the restrained prisoner, who was being labeled as a provider of sexual gratification. After all, the man was a child molester. The prisoner squealed as the pointed metal pricked his skin. Oleg laughed and gave the soft flesh a quick slap."Be still," he said. "Or we'll turn you into a eunuch, as well."The others laughed, too. One of them turned toward Grodovich with a knowing cackle, but the leering grin quickly faded as Mikhal stood up from his bunk.Grodovich glanced at his hulking protector and smiled. Upon his unexpected transfer from Ariyskhe, Grodovich had immediately put his monetary resources to work, first bribing the guards to be kept in isolation, while scouring the prison for a suitable protector."You want Mikhal Markovich," the head guard whispered to him through the cell door. "He's serving a life sentence for murdering ten people, but he has a mother in Novosibirsk who comes to see him every month. She scrubs floors in the railway stations for a pittance and still brings us rubles each month so we'll give him extra rations." The guard grunted. "When you see him, you'll know why she is concerned. He is a giant."And so he was. Huge in body but simple in the head, as the guard had explained. But this lack of guile, this simplicity, made him among the most feared inmates in Krasnoyarsk. He was oblivious to pain and completely without compassion or fear. And he was serving a life sentence. Bother him and you could be assured he would strike back without concern for punishment or retaliation. Mikhal had already killed three men inside the walls. These deaths were the result of the secret prisoner fights the guards held periodically. With a few payments to the guards and a series of monetary gifts to Mikhal's mother, that giant quickly assumed the role of Grodovich's protector. Fiercely loyal, he made sure that the only tattoos Grodovich received were the eight-pointed stars on his chest and knees that assured he would not be bothered inside the walls of Krasnoyarsk. The new prisoner squealed again, begging for them to stop, which elicited more laughter from the group."Soon you'll be getting all the attention you can handle," one of them said.A whistle sounded from the hall and an electric current shot through the dormitory room. The guards were approaching.Oleg quickly stepped back and shoved the cup of ink and the "needle" under the mattress of an adjacent bunk. The two men holding the child molester released him and motioned for him to pull up his pants. The door burst open as the prisoner was buckling his trousers. All the men stood at attention as the three uniformed guards, armed with heavy black batons, entered the room and looked around. The lead guard's gaze settled on Grodovich."You," the guard said. "Come with us."Mikhal turned his huge head toward the man, and the guard's face registered a bit of alarm."What is this about?" Grodovich asked."You have a visitor," the guard said. "An official one."Grodovich considered this. He wasn't expecting anyone. His lawyer came once a month to attend to his needs, and deliver the bribes to his keepers, but he'd been here less than a week ago. Still, a visitor was always a welcome diversion. He stood and grabbed his cap from the post on his bed. Mikhal picked up his cap, as well."Not him," the guard said, pointing at the giant. "Just you."Grodovich smiled and placed a hand on Mikhal's massive shoulder."Wherever I go," he said, "he goes."The guards looked at each other. One of them glanced at the urine stain on the bed, then to the impassive faces of the line of prisoners."Not this time," the chief guard said. "Orders. Just you. The front office. Let's go. Now."Grodovich felt the muscles of the giant's arm tensing. Still, a confrontation with the guards would put him in solitary confinement. Grodovich smiled and patted Mikhal's arm gently."It is all right, my friend," he said. "I will see you when I return."Grodovich squared his hat on his head as they headed for the door. The three guards followed, ushering him down a long corridor flanked by dormitory rooms on the right and windows covered with heavy metal screening on the left. The light that managed to filter through the encrusted filth on the panes dappled the mustard yellow walls. A myriad of dust motes floated in the speckles of sunshine. They came to the end of the corridor and moved down the stairwell toward the third floor. At the second landing, the ranking guard told everyone to halt. He turned and looked at Grodovich, who noticed that the man's face was now damp. The hairs on the back of Grodovich's neck rose. He thought about calling out for Mikhal but doubted the giant could get there fast enough."What is going on?" Grodovich asked. "Didn't you receive your monthly payment?"The ranking guard said nothing. He pursed his lips and motioned toward the stairway."Go wait for us down there," the guard said, pointing to the dimly lighted first-floor landing. "We have to attend to something on the second floor.""Attend to what?""An emergency," the guard said. "Now go." He and the others immediately opened the door and ran into the hallway.Grodovich stood there, listening to the fading sound of their boots on the tiled floor.Someone was waiting for him down there. Had he been marked for death, and if so, by whom? He began to creep back up the stairway, careful not to make too much noise. From the floor above he heard a low whisper and then a laugh. A swarthy face appeared around the corner, a gap-toothed smile stretched across it. Grodovich recognized the man as a fellow inmate, a Chechen. The man held up his left hand and waggled his fingers, making a come-hither gesture. He stepped fully into the landing and Grodovich saw the man's right hand held a long, metallic blade, probably fashioned from one of the soup cups.Grodovich turned and ran down the stairs toward the second-floor landing. Should he try to summon the guards? No, they had set him up. They would do nothing to help him now.He rounded the corner and continued his descent toward the first floor. Suddenly three more Chechens appeared, blocking his path. Each one held a crude blade. Each one smiled.Grodovich froze. He stooped and reached for his own shank, a thin strip of metal that he'd managed to liberate from the sole of a worn shoe, but he was inept at using it. Still, he would not go down without a fight. He backed into the corner of the landing as the four men approached from both above and below."What is this?" Grodovich asked. "I have done nothing to offend you.""We have our orders," one of the Chechens said as he continued creeping up from the first floor. "It is nothing of a personal—"A sudden gurgling interrupted everything. Grodovich glanced up in time to see a huge hand encircling the throat of the Chechen who'd been coming down from the third floor. He attempted to stab the big hand, but another large hand closed over that one. The man struggled like a puppet as his feet dangled and swung in open air, then all movement stopped. Mikhal's enormous form became visible behind him. The giant picked up the strangled marionette and held him at chest level while he strode down the stairs. When Mikhal reached the second-floor landing he flung the dead man toward the other three. One of them was knocked off his feet, another staggered back. The third one, the closest, made a lunging stab with his blade.Mikhal stepped back with the agility of an acrobat and seized the Chechen's wrist. Seconds later the man howled in pain. Mikhal forced the Chechen's knife back into his throat and let him drop to the floor, lumbering toward the two others. They both scrambled down the stairway with Mikhal in pursuit. Grodovich glanced around, then called to him."Wait," he said. "Don't chase them. It could be a trap."The giant halted, his face flushed with exertion, his breathing hard."I felt I should follow you," Mikhal said. He seldom spoke, and when he did his voice sounded almost childlike. "I looked down the hall and saw that Chechen bastard sneaking around.""I'm glad you did, my friend. Once again, you have saved my life." Grodovich heard the thudding of boots coming from the second-floor hallway. He motioned upward and told Mikhal to run. "If the guards see you here, they will use it as an excuse to place you in the solitary ward. Go."The giant hesitated for a split second, then strode up the stairs, taking them three at a time. Grodovich tossed his own blade and pressed himself into the corner of the landing. The door burst open and three different guards emerged."What is going on here?" the ranking guard yelled, his eyes widening as he surveyed the scene."A disagreement between two inmates," Grodovich said. "They fought and killed each other. It was terrible to behold."The guard's mouth worked, but no words came out. He licked his lips, pulled out his radio and spoke into it with clear precise tones, ordering more men to come to his position. He scrutinized Grodovich, who held up his hands to show there were no traces of blood."Some of your compatriots were taking me to see an official visitor when they had to leave," he said with a smile. "I hope their emergency has run its course without incident."Judo Training Center Arlington, VirginiaMack Bolan, the Executioner, sat on the edge of the mat and watched as the judo master demonstrated the last few techniques, throwing his much younger partner around with ease. The gi felt heavy on Bolan's shoulders. He preferred to train in his regular clothes, wearing his standard gear, but the owner of the dojo had insisted that all attendees had to wear the traditional judo garb. It was a small price to pay for being able to see a master such as Kioshi Watinabi at work.Jack Grimaldi, who was seated next to Bolan, leaned over and whispered, "Ah, it looks like the one guy's faking it."Bolan shook his head and brought his index finger to his lips."Whatever," Grimaldi said sotto voce. He leaned back and sighed.Bolan watched as the master executed the final move, Hiza Guruma, the wheeling knee throw. As the opponent stepped forward, the master stepped back and smacked the sole of his left foot against the other man's knee. Twisting the opponent's upper body in a circular motion, the master sent the other man over with a quick flip.Grimaldi snorted. "Like I said, all fake."Bolan shot him another quieting look, but it was obvious the judo master, an Asian man in his fifties, had already cast a glance their way. His eyebrows lifted slightly as he stared at Grimaldi. Then the master and his opponent bowed to each other, turned and bowed again to the audience.Grimaldi stretched and yawned. "Ready to blow this pop stand?"Before Bolan could answer the master held up his hands and waggled his fingers for the rest of the class to move forward, saying something in Japanese."The master wishes you to pair up for individual instruction," the young assistant said. The group of spectators got up and shuffled to the center mat. Bolan and Grimaldi paired off and gripped the thick lapels of each other's gis. The master called out commands for each technique. The first was O Goshi, the major hip throw. The second was Harai Goshi, sweeping hip throw."You want to go first?" Bolan asked.Grimaldi shook his head. "Nah. I want to prove to you that this stuff doesn't work. It's just like professional wrestling.""Okay," Bolan said and pivoted, pulling Grimaldi off balance and stepping inside his guard. Bolan slipped his right hip against Grimaldi's abdomen as he stepped back with his left foot and twisted, throwing Grimaldi over with a quick flip.Grimaldi slammed onto the mat, managing to break his fall with a slapping motion of his left arm."You all right?" Bolan asked.Grimaldi grunted. "I know how to fall."Master Watinabi strode over to them, speaking in Japanese and motioning for Grimaldi to get to his feet. As he did the master continued to give instructions to Bolan along with numerous gestures. The young assistant began translating."Master Watinabi says your technique is very good," he said to Bolan. "But he suggests bending lower if the opponent resists." He turned to Grimaldi and said, "Stiffen your arms."Grimaldi grinned and locked his arms, which were much longer than Watinabi's. The two men stepped back and forth and suddenly Watinabi thrust his right foot into Grimaldi's stomach and fell backward. Grimaldi flipped over and landed on his back with a thud. As he got up, Watinabi grabbed him once more, slipped into a modified hip throw and swept Grimaldi's legs out from under him, flipping him over on his back again. Grimaldi got up a bit slower this time and Watinabi grabbed him once more and thrust his hip into Grimaldi's stomach. The master paused and the assistant said, "Grab his belt and attempt to lift him backward."Grimaldi smiled and reared back, lifting the smaller man completely off the mat, but Watinabi lifted both of his legs to his chest then thrust them downward, at the same time grasping Grimaldi around the neck. As soon as Watinabi's feet struck the mat Grimaldi was launched over the master's right hip, his body flying pell-mell before slamming once again onto the mat.He lay there trying to get his breath."That is a useful technique against a taller opponent," the assistant said.Watinabi grinned at Grimaldi as Bolan reached to help him up."Good thing you know how to fall," Bolan said. Before Grimaldi could respond with one of his standard wisecracks, a cell phone rang. The Executioner glanced to the edge of the mat where his and Grimaldi's clothes and shoes had been stacked."Oh," Grimaldi said. "Saved by the bell. Is it yours or mine?""It must be yours. I turned mine off." Grimaldi grinned as he lay back. "In that case I'm really saved by the bell.""Don't be too sure," Bolan said. "It's probably Hal."

The move on the part of the US military, which began in 1996, to Network-Centric Warfare (NCW), meant the combination of sensor grids, C&C grids, and precision targeting to increase speed to command, and represented a military offset. Along with networking comes exposure to cyber attacks, attacks that will be used in future wars.

Enthralling read about the inevitability of a cyber 9/11 By Ben Rothke A point Richard Stiennon makes a number of times in There Will Be Cyberwar: How The Move To Network-Centric War Fighting Has Set The Stage For Cyberwar; is that cyber Pearl Harbor is the wrong metaphor. He feels a more appropriate metaphor is cyber 9/11.At 135 pages, the book is a quick and enthralling read. And at the end you are left wondering if just perhaps, there has already been a cyber 9/11.Much of the book describes the working of network-centric warfare (NCW). The main theory of NCW is to remove the fog of war via a sensor grid and a combination of precision-guided weapons, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and command and control. It’s that move to NCW that Stiennon believes has set the stage for an inevitable cyberwar. The book details how the US has spent billions in a run up to NCW, but seems to have forgotten that its underlying infrastructure (Windows, GPS, drones, etc.), were all built on insecure software. With that, the Pentagon has had numerous wake up calls, from malware on top secret networks, the Snowden debacle and more. Yet the reality is that the Internet and most military networks, as the book points out in detail, are quote porous.Much of the book deals with China, and their overt and covert attempts to penetrate US systems, networks and any intellectual property they can get their hands on.Chapter 8 on Assurance is a particularly fascinating chapter. While China has made it eminently clear that their goal is world domination, US firms and the US government have no qualms about outsourcing the manufacturing of key components to China.A both fascinating and horrifying point the book makes is that the US does not have a comprehensive program to certify that integrated circuits going into US weapons systems don’t contain malicious circuits. While DARPA is working on such a program, it’s still in its infancy; leaving US systems and military equipment at risk. The book brings to light a fact about the Hainan Island incident; the April 2001 incident of a midair collision between a Navy EP-3E and Chinese J-8II fighter. The result was that the crew of the EP-3E were not able to sanitize all of their equipment in time, which enabled the Chinese to ultimately reverse engineer the secret operating system used on the plane. By doing that, the Chinese has a road map for decrypting Navy classified intelligence and operational data.A cyber 9/11 is inevitable, and as There Will Be Cyberwar shows, it might just be closer than we think.

A Fascinating Read By Joseph Ponepinto The field of cyber espionage is evolving so quickly that most of us have little idea of how pervasive technology has become. Stiennon argues that given the abilities of technology, especially at the level of governments, cyberwar will be the next, inevitable method of combat. Considering the evidence he presents, it's pretty hard to disagree. The book is written in everyday language that is easy for either the executive or the layperson to understand. A must read if you care at all about the future of the internet and security.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A mile wide and an inch deep, but with some good points. By Lemas Mitchell This book was written as a rebuttal to Thomas Rid's (sorry) book Cyber War Will Not Take Place. There are a lot of things that Richard Stiennon deals with that have been dealt with in other books-- just not all in one place. And so that is an advantage of reading this book. But it can (and should) be supplemented with some other texts that explore the points that he has made more deeply. After someone has gone through those types of books, it is more difficult to be surprised by the things detailed in this book. The book starts with a hypothetical report that is made by the US military after defeat in the Taiwan Strait. They are reevaluating what (the author predicts) went wrong. (The Chinese show up again and again as villains in these stories. And they are that in real life.)Of the things that the author notes that have already been noted in other places:1. (pps. 34, 36). There is a lot of back and forth between the development of technologies and then the development of attacks against the security of those technologies. And then the development of a new level of security in response to those attacks. And then....... This topic was taken up by Simon Singh in The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography. Security technology has been evolving as a cat and mouse game for a long time. Maybe even a couple of millennia.2. (p. 40). Stiennon calls the lack of development of defense systems shortsighted and would prefer that technologies were proactively developed instead of reactively developed. But that's a bit like saying that a medicine should be invented and all of its side effects should be accounted for before it is released. Sometimes the only way to obtain knowledge is as a result of a crisis. (That is how the US learned about the various techniques that it developed to avoid real estate bubbles in light of the housing crisis.) The retrospective nature of knowledge was taken up by Nassim Nicholas Taleb in his book The Black Swan: Second Edition: The Impact of the Highly Improbable: With a new section: "On Robustness and Fragility" (Incerto). Ironically enough, this book was even mentioned in Stiennon's book. But it seems that the author did not draw the obvious parallel. The only way to know how to deal with a Snowden or a Manning was because you learned about what happened after it did happen. The next Snowden will be something else unpredictable.3. Going further on the epistemic foundations of security development: This issue of knowledge as a result of feedback mechanisms was also taken up brilliantly by Thomas Sowell in his Knowledge And Decisions. Not only is a lot of knowledge only "foreseeable" after the fact, but dealing with what happens after the fact is the only way to learn from disasters. It may be that the US has to suffer a military defeat to be given the opportunity to learn a lot of things. i. Is Taiwan really worth all the blood and treasure that they were willing to expend on it (given that China shows no signs of becoming democratic--ever); ii. What did we do wrong that allowed this to happen in the first place?; iii. What is the cost of not upgrading the military's security in a timely manner?4. There is a slap at the nature of democratic government. Yes, there are perverse incentives when the government is in a constant state of flux. No, people don't always vote for what will serve their best interests. The Myth of the Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies. But again: You cannot argue with people to whom democracy is a religion any more than you can argue with people for whom Islam is their religion. In the same way that Japanese learned that The Emperor was not divine with their WWII defeat, perhaps American people will learn that democracy is not the only way to do things when that is proven to not solve every problem and that you can't vote utopia into existence.5. We knew that the private sector does most things better than the State. That is old news. It could be found in any books by Milton Friedman (Capitalism and Freedom: Fortieth Anniversary Edition) or John Stossel. The fact that the private sector was more aggressive about protecting its source of income is not only unsurprising, but it's entirely predictable.6. There is something that is not explicitly stated, but is in the background in this book just the same: Sometimes decision making units reach the limits of what they are capable of. And that is not new. It was taken up by Joseph Tainter in The Collapse of Complex Societies (New Studies in Archaeology). (The same has also given presentations about how complex systems fail.) Given what we know about national variations in IQ, is it surprising that Western people would reach the limits of what they are capable of a bit faster than better organized Chinese?7. The trial and error nature of discovery is one that was detailed well in Tim Harford's Adapt: Why Success Always Starts with Failure. This failure of US intelligence agencies to get this right was portrayed negatively in this book, but it is exactly what you would expect given the size of that organization. And the fact that they are going to be slow learners is not unexpected given that they don't operate under the threat of going out of business and that the money that they lose is *someone else's* money.Of the book itself:1. There were several spelling mistakes as a result of the book's being self published.2. The topic was just a bit too technical. Most people won't understand it. If a reader read any two of the book that I noted earlier in the review, you could have deduced why predicting cyber attacks is next to impossible. And in that case, said reader would not have needed to read this book at all. But then......if someone had read none of those books and then came across this book the reasons for why cyber attacks are hard to predict would not have been brought across clearly from this writer's prose.3. The coverage of the (various) topics comes across as "a mile wide and an inch deep."4. The length of the average chapter was 7.6 pages, and the whole book can be read through in about 3 hours. Most of the references are links.Verdict: Recommended at the price of $1. The whole book only takes a few hours to go through, and there is really no one who can fail to get at least some information from it.
