An entertaining read that will make readers think By Chick Lit Central By Melissa AmsterI have a few things in common with Izzy: we're Jewish, we're working mothers, we're turning 40 (or just did, in the case of this story), and we blog on a regular basis. While I couldn't relate to certain things she was going through, I could still understand why she made the choices she did. She was a sympathetic character and I wanted her to triumph by the end of the story.Amy Sue Nathan provides an array of interesting characters, strong dialogue, vivid descriptions, and some interesting twists and surprises that keep readers on their toes. The story had the feel of a Jennifer Weiner novel with it being about a Jewish woman living in Philly and dealing with modern day issues. Adding in a Jewish grandmother figure added to this feel. The message that comes out of this story is important for all women (and even men) to consider.What didn't work so well for me was the title not really fitting with the premise of the story. I get why it was used, but it represented a secondary story line. Also, the chapter titles didn't really fit with what was going on in each chapter. They were mostly named after games or songs from our childhood, but didn't make sense in the grand scheme of things. It didn't really add a feel of nostalgia in comparison to the reminders of what Izzy missed in her youth. Aside from that, the ending felt a bit rushed once we got to the climax. Everything seemed to get resolved in 20 pages.However, I did like that the story wasn't just focused on Izzy and showed what her elderly neighbor and her best friend/cousin were going through in their lives and how Izzy tried to help them, as well.Overall, it was an entertaining read that will make readers think about how they represent themselves and how they treat their closest relationships.

Elizabeth “Izzy” Lane is thirty-nine and divorced. Her husband, Bruce Silverstein decided he needed to find himself (typical). Izzy and her son, Noah (five years old) have moved back into her family home. She has taken over the mortgage from her parents and they have moved to Margate. The day her husband left, Izzy started a blog called The Bizzy Blog (she did not want to use her real name). Izzy gives advice and tells stories about dating (Izzy is a school guidance counselor during the day). It has become very popular and now her friend, Jade wants Izzy to write for her Pop Philly site. Izzy would write Philly over 40 (even though she is only 39). Izzy agrees to write the column because she needs the money on the condition that she remain anonymous. Bruce has decided to go to California with his girlfriend, Amber. Bruce has lost his job and cannot continue his financial obligations to his son (he is a real gem).The one thing that Izzy fails to mention is that some of the information in her blog is fiction. She has been writing about dating Mac. Mac is a fictional boyfriend. Will Izzy be able to keep up her lie and who is she going to hurt in the process (you just know that this is not going to end well). I found this to be a mediocre novel. It is okay, but very silly and bland (like food with salt, pepper, and spices). The characters lack depth. The most interesting character is the elderly neighbor, Geraldine. I give The Good Neighbor 3 out of 5 stars (for okay). This novel was lacking in depth and humor. It could have been a funny novel, but it missed the mark.I received a complimentary copy of The Good Neighbor from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

To fill up the lonely nights, Izzy writes a blog, "anonymously," and it takes off because all the respondents want to connect with someone who understands this particular brand of loneliness, emptiness, and exhaustion.They say you can't just tell one lie; they add up. Bruce, the ex-, finally tells Izzy he's lost his job and cannot pay childcare. And he's going to California with stunning Amanda, to look for another job. The California detour upsets their shaky relationship, but Izzy believes she has no choice..It seems that the divorce has taken her breath away. She worries …about a job, about childcare, about her own exhaustion, and about how Bruce and Amanda are spending their time together in California.Izzy's over-achieving friends want her to be the Voice of Philly, an online blogger for 40 something divorced men and women. She is an instant sensation. The problem begins with one single lie - the boyfriend is purely an invention of her imagination, and he's a #10. Because of the close quarters at the office, Izzy has to be careful. People are beginning to be too curious.She nearly bursts when she decides to tell her elderly, sweet neighbor, Mrs. Feldman, that Mac is not real. Mrs. Feldman, like a good aunty, is not amused; she is shattered by the news. Then you realize that the elderly woman, whose children are trying to manage her life, has her own secret, which she has held in her heart for many years, and you have to sit back and wonder how the dilemma will work out.Highly recommended, with deep emotions, realistic characters, and some worthwhile skepticism of pinning your dreams to a blog.
