Solid start to a new trilogy . . 4 1/2 *'s By Willa Mercy I first discovered Ms Brant's books with her wonderful Mindhunter series - a great blend of forensic procedural, suspense and romance. Then it all went quiet for a while . . . however, I was thrilled to discover the reason for this was that Ms Brant had decided to dip her toes into the self publishing world with her next novel - Chasing Evil, the first in the Circle of Evil trilogy.Dr. Sophia Channing is a forensic profiler and has analyzed the most notorious psychopaths in the country. So when bodies start appearing buried on top of recently interred graves, she is invited to join Iowa's DCI task force to hunt the vicious sadist who has tortured and killed six women.DCI Agent Cam Prescott is leading up the case. He and Sophie have worked sporadically together before, but things have changed between them, since they had a fling shortly before we, the reader, meet them . .One of Ms Brant's strengths, and the reason I love her books, is that she writes great suspense. The police procedural is all logical, makes sense, and yet she still manages to stuff a surprise in now and again to keep me on my toes and throw me off the scent! It was also apparent that Ms Brant could explore the genre more freely, without being restricted by parameters set by a publisher. So the way that the story was laid out was different from previous books, as was the pacing. As this is a trilogy, set over a few weeks, parts of the story continue throughout the three books.Each chapter starts with a flashback to Cam & Sophie's relationship - so by the end of the book we have caught up with where they are now - for me that worked really well. What threw me a little was that at the end of the book we don't have a resolution to Cam & Sophie's relationship - and that was just due to the expectation on my part (and of reading the genre so much) where the main couple usually have their HEA! Having said that, if they had had a HEA it would have been out of place at *that* point in the book. I confess to emailing Ms Brant asking her to throw me some crumbs, and she graciously replied that Cam and Sophie's story would continue through books 2 and 3 with secondary romances as well, which was great to hear as I really enjoyed some of the supporting characters.So a solid and gripping start to a new trilogy and roll on October for book 2!

The writing flowed well, the characters were very interesting, some truly shiveringly evil, I loved the way the romance was handled-two great people, imperfect adults with pasts, but obvious hot chemistry and a lot of feelings. I can't wait for the next book in the series, if you like true romantic suspense you will love this book.

I admit that I am biased, and would probably give 5 stars to anything Ms. Brant has written-even her weekly grocery store list!I thoroughly enjoyed her Mindhunters series and have re-read each book several times. I also enjoyed her romantic suspense novels written for Harlequin. Kylie Brant has mastered the perfect mix of suspense and romance, and creates strong, memorable characters and well developed story lines.Chasing Evil was a strong introduction into her new Circle of Evil series. I liked how the author incorporated the backstory of Cam and Sophie into the beginning of each chapter, giving the reader a real insight into what forged their personalities and behaviors. The police procedural elements were very believable. And who doesn't like a good story about the profile and chase of a serial killer? The ending was a surprise, a variation from the typical Kyle Brant romantic suspense novels from the past, but just left me hungry for the next installment.
