The Author's Term "Simplexity" Pretty Much Sums Up This Book By Craig Stephans Freedom to Change seeks to propel readers to progess in adopting strategies facilitating positive change and creativity individually and in organizations. Michael Fullan writes as an academic theorist who has created a model that can theoretically be implemented in systems (like a school system) to effect a paradigm shift. The shift would facilitate employees becoming autonomously functioning contributors to a greater good. The premise and drive of the book are positive and worthy goals for both individuals and organizations. The book's subtitle suggests that it applies to the reader himself; however, it is really addressing organizational leadership and systems.The book is complex and seems to be more of a scholarly, academic book than a book written for the average reader seeking self-improvement in the area of leadership. The tone and flow of the book require careful analysis and study. The author quotes many researchers and references complex topics inhibit a smooth read. In other words, the book is very busy with many bullet points, lists, confusing graphics, etc., that prevent it from developing a coherent theme or rhythm. I found it difficult to read and to ascertain its practicality. Rather, I constantly imagined how impractical the assertions were in familiar settings.The author is almost primarily addressing school systems. If any reader would find this relevant and helpful, it would most likely be school principals or superintendents or other academics who serve as consultants to school systems. For those in business or leaders of other organizations, you may find insights here but will probably be frustrated by the busyness and complexity of the book. You will probably wonder also about the lack of consequences for poor performances in the author's framework. I suppose that for the school setting, one hopes that unproductive staff will just get weeded out; however, leaders know that is not the case. For change to occur, obstacles to change sometimes have to be removed coercively.The author builds his book on terms like "simplexity" and "systemness" and "diffusion." I found these confusing and not practical at all outside of the lab.

Good information and presentation By sanoe.net From Michael Fullan's "Freedom to Change", I was given a new made-up word that seems like it should have always existed: simplexity. That is one of many things that I found compelling about this book which seeks to share strategies on how to bring about change. When I first saw the book, I thought it was about changing one self and that could be applied but it is more about four strategies at effecting change.The four strategies seem simple enough (Seek, Improve, Build and Find), but as in everything, there is simplexity, that mix of simple and complex. It is a straightforward book though and the concepts (and examples) are clear and easy to follow which I really appreciated. I particularly found the section on feedback to be the section that part that spoke the most to me. I found myself going over that section more than a few times, but there was good information in every topic covered.

Principles are sound, presentation could stand for improvement By Sibelius This book utilizes an interesting format that can be described as - a ratio of 1 part philosophical musings to 1 part citations from other sources of literature/published study to 1 part practical application of said lessons within the framework of educational systems. The end result is somewhat of a mixed bag with Fullan's personal reflections oftentimes not blending smoothly with the grounded source materials so frequently cited. While the principles to free oneself from internal and external roadblocks in order to enact necessary change are for the most part sound and quite worthy of your reading time - the presentation itself could stand some refinement to better impart Fullan's messaging.
