“I had awoken late that Manhattan morning, shattered, confused, and nursing a hangover born of the kind of bored, incessant drinking that has a habit of accompanying twenty-five-hour journeys, especially those involving three-hour transits through the absurdist morass that was the Tom Bradley terminal at Los Angeles International Airport. It was difficult to blame my alarm clock as I had neglected to set it, and in any event there was no time to point fingers. I was by that stage more than an hour late for the only meeting of moderate substance that I’d scheduled during a three-day stay in New York.” Tom Crago owns and runs a video game development studio in Melbourne, Australia. Flashbacks from the Flow Zone is his love letter to the business trip; a raging, hilarious, anti‐memoir that is all about the ride. Critically acclaimed upon its release in Australia and the UK, Flashbacks from the Flow Zone is also about moments on the road and about how our journeys (big and small) fashion our impressions of cities and their inhabitants. While mourning the end of one travel epoch, the book’s voice is nevertheless buoyant, witty and entirely novel insofar as its focus is squarely upon business travel. And in truth it’s true perspective is narrower still. These are impressions of the view out the window. Tom Crago is not a rock star, or an actor or the playboy heir to an obscene fortune. He’s a guy who puts on a business shirt every day and tries to win work for his company. That company happens to be in the video game industry. And his clients, some of the biggest players in the business, happen to share his view that if a thing’s worth doing, it’s worth doing in some brand of style.
