Edward Whalen, Oracle ACE, is chief technologist at Performance Tuning Corporation (www.perftuning.com), a consulting company specializing in database performance, administration, virtualization, and disaster recovery solutions. He is the author of Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Deep Dive and other Oracle Press books.

By Deiby Gomez Database Upgrades and Migrations is a very huge area, there are different combinations involving settings in source database, target database, source environments, target environments, methods to migrate/upgrade, and all the bugs that you can find etc. So many things that sometimes we don't know how or where to start learning it. If you feel like you must know it but you don't know how to start, and from which book to learn because you don't want to waste your time reading a book that won't be useful for you, I recommend this book. With this book you will know the most important methods and you will get a clear idea of how to start in this lake of knowledge, for sure this book will be useful for you and your career. Once you complete this book, you will start talking about migration and upgrades like a pro :)

I agreed to review because there are very few single sources of information for the topic that span the range of methods to upgrade or migrate between database types, vendors, versions and use different techniques based on the criteria and business reasons for upgrading. In class, I was often asked how to handle a variety of upgrade or migration scenarios, and this is truly the first book I have seen that identifies many of the possibilities and techniques. The book provides a framework to follow, shows different scenarios in which to use the techniques, and helps understand the various costs and benefits associated with each technique. If nothing else, it is worth reading to give some ideas how to start to approach your upgrade or migration.
