I probably shouldn't have stolen bags of trash from a potential murder suspect. Arguably-- just arguably, mind you-- it may have been unwise to cos-play at an event where I was likely to be shot at. But sometimes you just have to take some chances, right? And maybe things do get a little unfortunate. What of it? If you ask me, an unfortunate decision here or there can change your life. In a positive way, just so long you don't killed in the process. I enjoyed the author highlighting Ted Drews and the Loop, but felt there was more he could have done with the setting. Granted, St. Louis is a sprawling city, with a lot to take in, and as the main character has an intermittently working car, maybe it was for the best she didn’t venture out and about too far!This book is HILARIOUS. I was laughing out loud so many times while reading, stopping my husband to share the latest one liner that had me rolling. As we both play MMOs, there were many points that were funny because they were so true.On that point, I really enjoyed the author’s treatment of MMOs, the community within them, and just general nerdiness overall. It was a loving, but realistic look at the highs and lows within the community, with plenty for readers from within that world to identify with and chuckle at. Even if you don’t play MMOs, the overall world of fandoms was well represented, making this a great book to recommend to anyone who enjoys the genre.MMO characters, or avatars, are all about the customization you put onto the outside – the scars, the hair, the gear and outfits, etc. They are usually brightly colored, and distinctive. The same description can be said for the characters in the book – diverse and distinctive. Not in the same way as the two-foot high pink hair of an avatar, but in the fleshing out of nuances, of well rounded characters that really stand out. This allows them to hold their own through a convoluted and fast-paced plot, which ultimately reaches a satisfying conclusion.The friends I have told about this book can’t wait to get their own copy!I received a review copy of this work from the publisher through NetGalley

Fun fandom detective story By Johanna Draper Carlson Max Wirestone combines geek culture, Millennial struggles, and the detective genre in The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss. It’s a fun read, with plenty of touch points for a particular generation or type of fan.Dahlia is unemployed and living in friend Charice’s apartment. Charice tends to throw outrageous theme parties, at one of which Dahlia is hired to find the Bejeweled Spear of Infinite Piercing, a digital reward in an MMORPG. Jonah snagged it from his gaming guild after a mission, but his former roommate then took it from him. Dahlia’s never been a detective before, but she can use the $2000 he’s offering, so she takes the gig. (She’s been interviewing for months without getting a job.)Then Jonah is murdered, and retained by his family’s lawyer, Dahlia tries to figure out what’s going on. The resulting events include cosplay, a gaming convention, hipsters, grad students, online gaming, and weird trends.The tone of the book is modern, a tad snarky and full of Dahlia’s monologues as she narrates events and her feelings. She describes herself as boring, but with a rebellious streak, and looking like the “quiet girl at the library”. As with most people these days, comparisons are made with pop culture references. She seemed like someone I would enjoy hanging out with, or like half of my Twitter list. I enjoyed the story, and I’d read more with Dahlia and her friends. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I laughed and laughed at this witty mystery By QueenBook I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This is a niche read - geeky mystery with lots of references that might slide past the uninitiated, but as a member of the uninitiated - I scored a 6/10 on our high school scifi geek test only because the club sponsor gave me hints - I have to say this book is still a riot. Dahlia is a fabulous narrative voice, and despite her Millennial aimlessness, jobless and penniless existence, and dating disaster rut of a life, I really enjoyed every moment of her cheeky, clueless story. She is one of the funniest protagonists I've read in quite some time. The secondary characters, too, add a lot of engagement to the story and realism to the post college, not quite settled life. I'm talking about that stage when you own furniture that has duct tape performing essential tasks and you have only condiments and alcohol in your fridge. I particularly enjoyed Charisse, Dahlia's roommate - she is one hot mess of fun, and it just wouldn't have been the same without her flitting around in the background.The plot is one where minor things, like the theft of a spear in a multiplayer online game like World of Warcraft, are made into impossibly huge issues that blossom into real life disaster that is marginalized by the minor issues, like the theft of a digital spear. I found it hilarious, but more staid readers searching for a serious book need not apply. This is a purely escapist read of the laugh out loud variety. Lots of the humor came from references to movies, books, and pop culture that I did "get," and the ones that I didn't get were well enough explained that I felt part of the joke anyway. I do think younger readers will struggle with these references more than new adults, so while I thought this was a YA book, I would say that 20 and 30 somethings will enjoy it more.Overall, this is a great read when you just want to laugh and enjoy characters who are more directionless and less prepared to be adults than you are. I couldn't help but feel like I was reading a hipper and more contemporary take on an American Bridget Jones. It also reminded me a bit of Rainbow Rowell's Attachments. I can think of three friends right now who I desperately want to gift this book, but I think it would be a harder sale to my high school readers. I know that I will certainly be looking for more by this author in the future.
