About the Author Joyce Herzog began tutoring in the second grade. She has been teaching the learning disabled and their teachers and parents for twenty-five years in public and private schools and homeschooling situations. She has a masters degree in Learning Disabilities form the University of Iowa. She is also the author of The Scaredy Cat Reading System, Choosing and Using Curriculum and Timeless Teaching Tips!

39 of 39 people found the following review helpful. My second "Bible." By Baciagaluppo Of all the books about educating children with learning disabilities, this is my favorite. It is written from a Christian perspective, so it may not be for everybody. However, Herzog has many years of experience, practical suggestions, and she puts all of the jargon and psychobabble in the proper perspective.My favorite section of the book is where she lists the qualities and characteristics many LD children have -- the POSITIVE qualities, as well as the problem areas. This is the whole key to having the proper attitude towards these children, and teaching them effectively.Herzog also points out that school is but one aspect of any person's life, and it is TEMPORARY. She gives many specific examples of people who did miserably in school, but had very successful lives anyway.An extremely helpful and welcome book.

By Patrice R-C From this book I learned to respect my son for what he is, not what he should be. Learning can only take place when you accept your child for what he/she is. My attitude toward my son was that I needed to "fix" him, so that he could be the same as other children. I learned to accept and celebrate his uniqueness. This book is from a Christian perspective but I think it would help anyone who has a child who is struggling academically, emotionally, or physically. We homeschool our special needs son. As per Joyce Herzog's advice, he spends a lot of time doing things he is interested in, rather than trying to grind the academics in him. He's much more receptive to doing his school work if he's able to play with his Legos or look at maps, things he loves doing! As I said, this book was life changing for our family! The author's suggestions are practical and easy to implement, which is great for families who are already worn out from dealing with their special needs children. The chapters are short and easy to read - no education jargon here! This is a very helpful book, written for parents in a style easy to understand.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A winner By Gwen I think a have read every special needs and regular home-school book out there and this is my second favorite. It is very easy to understand yet covers all the all we see when we educate our learning labeled children. I spent the first year after diagnoses trying to make sense of the jargon and then find appropriate curriculum. Not easy. It does not cover dyslexia and the Orton Gillingham method that is needed to help this condition. This book does bring up the need to look into vision issues other than the need for glasses such as the eyes not being able to focus properly together at the same time. Vision therapy has worked wonders for many dyslexic children and I appreciate her bringing this to everyone's attention. She gives very specific advice, which I love and is not pretentious. Warning: This is a very Christian text. I am a secular homeschooler and was a bit put off by her philosophy such as Children learn to read to so they can read the Bible and need to do sports. Learning without Labels is definitely a very practical tool if you are just getting started or need encouragement that you are your child's best hope. If you are a secular home-schooler or not christian but still doing religious education at home, I still recommend. I have put down many home-school books short on educational info but very heavy on why it is God's plan to home-school. The book has the special needs home-school info you can really use so keep an open mind.
