This book helps you design a sensible backup strategy, choose and configure the best backup hardware and software for your needs, and understand how to make your backups as painless as possible.

By Dave N Joe on Tech Backing up Mac reviewIf you like structured learning in a friendly way, Joe on Tech’s “Backing Up Your Mac” is for you. Even if you like to cherry-pick, Joe’s ebook makes it easy to skim the Contents and jump right to the stuff you need.As Joe has done in his earlier 50+ ebooks for another imprint, he doesn’t just tell you ‘do this, do that’, he takes the view that you also want to know some of the ‘why’ of the topics he writes about. He helps you decide what’s right for you, which is way cool.If you read the book straight through, you’ll understand the topic, not just have some basic facts.Joe’s friendly style makes the pages go by in a breeze, it’s more like listening to a sage than reading a textbook.Joe knows that tech is an ever-evolving theme, so his ebooks frequently update, and he explains what has changed, so you’re always up with the latest thinking and information. In “Backing Up Your Mac”, Joe explains what’s new in this edition (in case you’ve read his earlier works), the whys of backing up, what you need in hard- and software, and how to make good decisions on those, how to implement what he suggests, and your alternatives. Finally, he tells you not just how to get started, but what to do when you need those backups and how to manage the storage needs. The full picture.Again, he’s not about ‘my way or the highway’, he wants you to understand a topic, explain why he does what he does, and give you the smarts to pick your own path, be it his way or your own. Hard to imagine a more respectful way of education!

Before commenting on "Backing Up Your Mac," I love the epub format and the ability to jump all around the book to find quick answers.I previously implemented most of the back-up strategies from a previous publication of Joe's and back up nightly using SuperDuper. I always keep one bootable backup offsite. And for good measure I still use TimeMachine. "Backing Up Your Mac" takes the process to a distinctly higher level yet keeps the strategy simple. Joe contrasts and compares the options and products available and does so in an engaging, conversational way. His work is readable. I appreciate the level at which he targets his audience.Once I had a hard drive failure in an iMac and lost nothing because his advice was followed. Last month my 3 TB Fusion Drive was recalled by Apple. The uninstall/install of the drive was painless and so was restoring all content and data to the 27 inch machine. A clean, bootable external drive is nice to have, and even better when it is up to the minute with its content.I am continuing to update and refine, and in some cases completely change my strategies based on the present-day information Joe describes in this new book. I know "zero" about Keynote but want to learn, so I'll be an early purchaser of that when he releases it.

Unfortunately, the moment you delve into what that actually means and how to do it you discover that backups are rather a complex topic involving myriad decisions. The good news is that Joe Kissell is here to help Mac users, with a thorough exploration of what's what, and clear recommendations for how to achieve what you're after with your good backups. The book is well-organised, thorough and detailed. We all have differing backup needs, so the best starting point is to analyse those needs and come up with a strategy.Once the strategy's decided then software and hardware have their part to play, and the options, considerations and implementation are clearly laid out. But making backups is only part of the story as you need to manage them, test them and then, in the worst of times, use them. And that's where you'll be glad you kept this book handy as the steps you need are laid out, whether it's locating a lost Contact or restoring a whole disc full of files. This is another clear, usable book by one of my favourite tech authors. If you treasure the stuff on your Mac you'd do well to work though this book and get yourself well set up before the worst happens.
