American education is at a cross-road. Teachers and students are floundering to meet the requirements of a policy, procedure, and data-driven education system that expects teachers to follow mandated educational policies and standardized curriculum. It’s a system that coddles and rescues students in an attempt to “leave no child behind,” and fosters conformity rather than critical thinking and personal responsibility. It’s time to ask the relevant questions. Should data drive the system? Does such a system hijack the learning process? Is “corporate education” opposed to learning? Why do students need to be made successful in the same way? Is an entitlement mentality compromising teachers’ professionalism in the classroom? Is digital technology and social networking having negative effects on students’ ability to learn? Are censorship issues stunting students’ higher level thinking skills? In "Taking Back Our Classrooms" Barbara Wood explores America’s public education system from a teacher’s perspective. It’s popular to blame teachers for the current dysfunction in the system. But many factors impinge on teachers’ ability to be effective in the classroom. Barbara sheds light and brings intelligent and poignant insight on these issues. Don’t stop the debate and make policies to change the system until you consider the concerns addressed in this book.

LPC PC Ms. Wood's commentary on the current trends in our public educational system is BOLD, TIMELY, AND SPOT-ON! This book is a must read for educators, parents, and anyone interested in the well-being of our nation's children. Ms. Wood discusses how strong governmental influence is reinforcing the growing sense of student entitlement. She gives a first-hand account of how mandated policies and procedures tie the hands of creative and talented teachers, preventing them from being the great teachers that encourage their students to aspire to greatness. Her insight on the damage lack of discipline is having on students is astounding! From cover to cover, Taking Back Our Classrooms will keep the reader totally engaged. I highly recommend it!

I love how the author brings in stories and examples from her own classroom experience to show the reader how crazy our school system has become. It's all part of the political debate going on now. As the author so poignantly points out, we are creating a society full of self-centered, irresponsible, demanding students. This book needs to be read by anyone who cares about what's happening to education in our country and who wants to thoroughly consider all the issues before establishing government policies.

This book is written directly from a teacher's own experience in the classroom, from 38 years of experience. Many personal illustrations, as well as carefully documented facts about the state of our educational system in America. Along with her comparisons to other countries, i.e. Australia and Finland, the author also gives a myriad of tips and ideas on how each of us can make a difference! I would highly recommend this book to politicians, administrators, teachers, and parents.
