How to offer good opportunities to pupils at risk or even high risk in mainstream education? Policies, measures and practices were assessed comparatively in 23 European countries. Pupils at (high) risk of failure and exclusion from mainstream education are a major and urgent challenge for educational policies and practices – in classrooms, schools, the national political arena, public debate and the international research community. Challenges regard the foci of the present book, being: - The reduction of early school leaving, - Educational priority measures for the most disadvantaged groups, such as immigrant pupils, pupils belonging to minorities, Roma pupils, etc., and civic socialization for all, - Appropriate mainstream education for challenging and special needs pupils, - The management of safe educational conditions and the prevention of bullying and harassment, - Support measures for the teachers of pupils at (high) risk. The author extended the existing body of knowledge of pupils at (high) risk and these foci, and so of their perspectives in mainstream education, in relation to public debate, to effective policies and to best practice in schools and classrooms.

Key challenges and responses in European education today from a comparative perspective By Silvia Molina This book provides an overview of key topics in European education today, based on the concern of how to offer quality education to those most in need. Early school leavers or pupils at risk of leaving school early, migrants and minority pupils, special need students, children and youth victims of bulling and harassment, as well as the teachers’ training and support measures to effectively respond to these students’ needs, are topics at the core of current educational priorities in the European policy and research, as well as current citizens’ concerns. The contribution of the book consists of gathering together relevant data on each of these challenges and providing a comparative description across European countries, as well as showing some measures that are being implemented to respond to them. From our point of view, this is indeed a necessary task as we need to advance towards more efficient and equitable educational systems. From this book, at least two lessons can be learnt. First, we learn that it is possible to implement measures to tackle the challenges of current educational systems, as such actions are being implemented in different countries, and some of them have led to improvements. However, not all the interventions presented in the book are accompanied by evidences on the improvements achieved, which is due to the difficulties reported by the research team to compare actions and results across countries. Therefore, the second thing we learn is that more evidence is needed to better assess the impact of the different actions and to know whether they can be replicated with the same success in other contexts. At this point we agree with the author’s reflection on the need to implement educational actions based on documented evidence. The author warns that the book does not provide definitive conclusions or universal solutions, but we do not understand it as a limitation but as a call for further research on these topics. For all these reasons, we think this book can be of interest for any person concerned with education and specially those who can have an active role in it from the policy making, the academia or the school intervention.Ramón Flecha and Silvia Molina
