My three star rating should technically be a 3.5, yet the system doesn't offer that as an option. Initially I was frustrated by the book's exceedingly sloooooooooow start. I am talking seriously slow here! My frustration grew once I truly realized that the story line was destined to remain rather blah. While each of the three sisters was likable, I should NOT have been able to foresee their individual endings in the story. One might wonder why I continued reading; quite simply, it is my lot in life to finish what I start. Every once in a while I am rewarded with a most pleasant surprise...The Rose Girls wasn't one of them.

30 of 36 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful read By P. Blevins The Rose Girls is a novel by Victoria Connelly. It concerns several romances that are completely surrounded by roses, mainly the old generation of roses. Each of the three sisters is in some way attached to a young man. The three sisters keep their romances away from the others as much as possible. Their main goal is to find some way to fix up the old mansion and keep it or sell it. Therein lies a problem. One sister wants to sell, one wants to keep the mansion, and the third does not want to be in the middle on this decision. Not everyone can be happy with a decision.Celeste, the eldest daughter, has finally come home. She left home to escape the problems with her mother. Almost as soon as they married, she and Liam realized they had nothing in common and should not have been married. They divorced and now Celeste had packed up and moved home, in the aftermath of her Mother’s death, to go about setting things to right before she leaves again. She decides to sell some rose paintings and has contacted an art auctioneer from London. Julian Faraday has a house nearby that he wants to live in full time. He wants to give up his auction house and open an antique shop nearby. Meanwhile, he is out to get the best price for the paintings Celeste has given him. The other two girls are upset with Celeste for selling the paintings and, more importantly, for suggesting they sell their home.Gertie is the middle daughter. She is concerned with the growing of roses and the selling of them for weddings, funerals, and everything in between. She is currently having a clandestine affair with James Stanton. He and his wife, Samantha, had moved into the area and redesigned a house around Samantha’s disability. She had hurt herself by riding a semi-broke horse and ended up in a wheelchair. She is a very unhappy and cruel woman. James has been taking care of her for years. If he is telling the truth, he would like nothing more than to leave Samantha; but the time hasn’t been perfect yet. Gertie just wants to get it over with so she can marry him. Will Gertie get what she wants? Is James who she thinks he is?Evie is the youngest and seemed the closest to their mother. She is the one who grieves the most and would do anything just to stay in the mansion as it is and work in her gardens. She is at odds with her sisters over whether to sell or not. She was the closest to their Mother. Now she gets a letter from Lukas, an art student who had spent some time in the area but seemed most interested in Evie. He returns to see her again only to be told she doesn’t want him there. He doesn’t believe her and stays. What is she going to do with him? Why can’t she tell anyone the secret she is keeping? Was she as close to their mother as the others think?Throughout the novel, the girls are dealing with their feelings over their mother’s death. For Celeste, it was why didn’t she love them? Why was Celeste always wrong? The other two felt the same way but at different levels. Why did their mother treat them this way? Could she help it? She tuned everyone out and gave her attention to the roses. Why would she do that? The novel is very good and keeps your interest. I highly recommend it. Those who are rose enthusiasts will enjoy all the references to roses throughout the book. I have to say that those passages held no interest for me. I knew why they were important to the story but still I basically skipped over those passages.
