About the Author Leslie Pietrzyk is the author of two novels, Pears on a Willow Tree and A Year and a Day. Her short fiction and essays have appeared in many journals, including Gettysburg Review, The Sun, Shenandoah, River Styx, Iowa Review, TriQuarterly, New England Review, and the Washington Post Magazine. She has received fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. Pietrzyk is a member of the core fiction faculty at the Converse low-residency MFA program and teaches in the MA Program in Writing at Johns Hopkins University. She lives in Alexandria, Virginia.

The unifying element in ANGEL is that the usually 30-something year-old female protagonist/narrator's husband has died suddenly. Pietryzk uses a variety of story-telling techniques brilliantly, plumbing the depths of her own experience as one who lost her own husband suddenly when she was in her thirties. For anyone who has lost a spouse, this book will resonate dramatically; for others, the stories carry their own weight, whether written as a multiple-choice test, a list, a series of short anecdotes, or as more traditionally told tales. Pietrzyk, who has taught many MFA courses, uses that medium as a setting for a couple of these wonderful stories, one of which is written as a craft lecture.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This is such a good book. By Susan Silver Spring I attended several readings where the author read from this book. I was on the edge of my seat completely engrossed in the story. The writing is excellent throughout this book, with humor and sorrow well blended. As a set of linked short stories it is quite impressive all that is packed between the front and back covers.

Also, I love the innovations in structure in some--but not all--of the stories. Don't rush through the book, though. Savor each story.
