“Elise Delcroix was coming home after eleven years for the recognition and retribution she knew she deserved.” Elise Delcroix left the small town she grew up in eleven years earlier, angry, hurt, and vowing never to return. As a child she’d felt entitled to the best of her father’s love and attention, resenting his favoritism toward her half-sister and half-brother. Only her immigrant grandfather had showered her with the devotion she felt she needed. Her problems with her father were a case of history repeating itself. The grandfather she adored had favored two of his children over Elise’s father, Emil. Emil’s own frustrations with his father, Jules, and his wild youth, leave Elise a child of a volatile divorce, shuttled between her alcoholic mother and her successful, but judgmental father and forced to share his love with the children of his other relationships. She rebels against him in every way for attention, shunning his increasingly religious ways, acting out against her brother and step-mother. Only her grandfather and her half-sister, Nova, are spared Elise’s wrath and offered her love. When family suspicions turn toward her, rather than her brother, over a questionable bank transaction, Elise leaves home for New York, furious and unforgiving, remaining estranged from her father until his death. Set in the green, rolling hills of Western Pennsylvania and narrated by Elise, Nova, and their grandmother, Eugenie, The Narrow Gate is a powerful and tender novel about coming home and a family that must face its own flaws in order to find a way to heal.

Review Windy City Reviews - November 15, 2015The Narrow Gate. Janet Roberts. BookBaby, October 8, 2015, Trade Paperback and Kindle, 194 pages.Reviewed by Ray Paul. Before writing this review, I uncharacteristically read Janet Roberts' short novel twice from cover to cover. I was driven by two reasons. I loved the flow of her lush prose and I wanted to savor it again. In addition, even though each chapter heading listed the point-of-view character, there were so many different narrators I wanted to make sure I understood how each added to my understanding of the plot. As it turned out, I did not need the second reading because I "got it" the first time. What else I did receive from the second reading was an even greater appreciation of the depth of the author's prose. The Narrow Gate is a story about relationships within a large family in a small Western Pennsylvania town. The focus character, Elise, is self-exiled to Long Island. The novel begins and ends when she returns to her hometown for her father's funeral. During that brief time period, the reader is treated to a psychology handbook full of family love and dysfunction as each relative adds his or her voice. The glory of the writing is that by the end of the story, the reader sees the entire picture and understands the title, The Narrow Gate.I highly recommend this book by Janet Roberts.

By Nick Janet has been a client of mine for the past 5 months and was telling me all about her plans for a novel. I listened and supported, believing she would eventually accomplish her goal. I never would have guessed that she would come in, smile beaming on her face as she proudly hands me an autographed copy of The Narrow Gate. I was unbelievably proud of her. Normally I don't read many books that are "family-centered" and "touching" but I decided that I would give it a shot. I sat down one day, determined to get through the first 30 pages, and started reading. Before I knew it, I was swallowed into the dramatic tale spun by Ms. Roberts. I couldn't put this book down; I needed to finish it to see the storylines through. I recommend this book to anyone who likes any type of drama (be it with friends, family, or strangers) and want a different type of "coming back home" type of story. This book will make you think, question, and doubt your once steely resolve. It's not a long read, but it is a good one. 10/10 would recommend.

By MadReader This novel is told in the voices of several characters, and each advances the plot from a new perspective. The lives of these individuals are intertwined, sometimes in surprising ways. This technique keeps the reader engaged in the story. It is well told and entertaining - a recommended read and a really good first book from this author!
