The books aimed at beginners use tutorials to introduce the software. The expert books are encyclopedic, covering every aspect of Lightroom, without the niceties of many tutorials, but covering all the functions. This book is somewhere in-between. The author covers all the basics modules of Lightroom, from ingestion to output, including sending images to Photoshop or certain plug-ins for processing beyond the capabilities of Lightroom. Unfortunately this is mostly straight narrative without tutorials, although in some cases illustrations are provided. Unlike many of the beginner's books, no images are provided for the reader to follow along. The author provides introductions to the newer functions like Photo Merge to HDR or Panorama, although not the just-issued dehaze feature which is available only to subscribers, not the so-called perpetual version. From time to time McCormack provides a reference to a rather sophisticated technique that he apparently discussed in his on-line column, but for the most part he skips through the functions without much detail. For example, in discussing the new HDR function, one may not understand the implications of the simple statement that HDR increases the dynamic range of a photo. Then his explanation of the deghosting feature does not explain that one can switch back and forth in the preview between different levels of deghosting to see which is most effective. For another example, when he discusses keywords, one of the features that allows recovery of a particular photo or photos in a large catalog, there is little discussion of the logic for creating keywords.I found that many of the screen captures in the book were just too small to see, even with the aid of a magnifying glass. On another technical point, which might seem nit-picking unless you plan to use the book for reference, beware if you want to find something in the book. The headings in the index do not go deeply enough, so that, for example, all of the functions of actually processing an image, with the exception of the tool strip, are contained under the heading "The Right Panel." This might be acceptable, except the index is similarly skimpy, without even a listing for "presets".One might be able to learn how to use Lightroom from this book, but why would one want to when there are more accessible books. As a reference, the kind of questions a user might seek to answer are likely not covered, or at the very least, difficult to find.

By Piet Van den Eynde Having written a number of Lightroom books myself, I know the ordeal it is to write a book about a software application as comprehensive as Lightroom. I like Sean's book for a number of reasons:- it's in-depth without being an encyclopedia. There are books that just list all the features in Lightroom at length, but give few recommendations on how to actually use those features and why you should use one technique over another. This book maintains a good balance between being comprehensive and giving advice.- it is very complete - as one reviewer pointed out it does indeed not cover the Dehaze functionality, but that was added after this book went to print and will be the case for every Lightroom book that was released recently.- and, last but not least, it's written in a witty, conversational style.Plenty of Lightroom books (and software books in general) will give you recipes. In other words, they focus on the result, but don't often go into what goes on underneath to get that result. They sell you fish, rather than teaching you how to fish for yourself, which is what this book does.Beginners get more than enough information from this book, but even an experienced user (like I consider myself to be) can learn more than a couple of tricks. I learnt how Sean does his image review, and found ways to improve mine. That is the real value of a book like this: it grows with you as your knowledge of the software increases. I highly recommend it.

Personally, I find this one to be one of the best. The version that I read was the ebook version. Right now, the paperback version is cheaper than the Kindle version; and I think that it would be easier to use as a resource. Lightroom is an incredible piece of software, and it is designed specifically for photographers. However, like all software, there is a learning curve. McCormack does a great job of teaching what you need to know to take advantage of the extraordinary capabilities of Lightroom CC. The book is laid out beautifully, and is quite easy to follow. My recommendation is that you read the book one section at a time. Read the book; then spend time using what you have learned inside of Lightroom. Then go to the next section. If there are things that he is discussing that don't apply to you, skim those parts. But file them away somewhere in your head because there may well come a day when they will apply to you. Forexample, you may not now want to do tethered shooting, but in the future, that could easily change. The same thing might hold for some of the Modules such as the Book, Map or Slideshow modules. If there comes a time that you want to create a book, Lightroom CC is a fabulous tool.McCormack goes into areas that don't strictly apply to Lightroom, but are crucial for your photography. For example, not only does hemake clear how important having a calibrated monitor is, he shows you how to do it with a particular calibrator (it just so happens to be the one that I use). There are lots of tools inside of Lightroom that are not obvious, but can be invaluable. If you are a longtime Lightroom user like me, I promise you that you will still learn things that you did not know. For those who use Lightroom, this a great resource, and at the present time, it is a real bargain. Even though I already have the ebook version, I may well buy a paperback copy.
