“This book is made up of poems written for strangers. Every week, over the course of two years, I asked a stranger for a word to use in a poem. I had only two rules: The person had to be an actual stranger. The word had to appear in the poem. Aside from that, the poem could be about anything. And so each poem became about many things: the word itself, the stranger-encounter, and the world as I encountered it.” Since its inception, Elisabeth Sharp McKetta’s Poetry for Strangers has changed hundreds of people’s relationship with poetry, mobilizing poets and non-poets alike to share their writing on an eclectic array of weekly words. These poems are a testament to the small moments of beauty in every ordinary life.

Elisabeth McKetta’s third book, Poetry for Strangers, beckons poets and readers to traverse concentric themes. McKetta weaves words into magic. As she does in her blog of the same name, McKetta empowers readers and writers to venture confidently into writing poetry. Birth, death, love, aging, parenthood, and youth – all infused with wonder – are among the leitmotifs plaited into the tapestry of her excellent writing. McKetta is an academically trained master of fairy tales who writes meticulously and sparsely. She explores in her poems the enchantment of the stories underpinning our culture and lives. This book welcomes poets to McKetta’s exploration of the realms of simple and complex human experiences. Full disclosure: I am related to the poet. That said, I would love her poetry if she were a stranger.

A revelatory book for those who may THINK that they are strangers to poetry By Martin Kevorkian If you are a stranger -- even or perhaps especially if you are a stranger to poetry -- this book is for you. Why? "Because," as Elisabeth (Extra) Sharp McKetta writes, "poetry should matter to people. Poetry is about finding moments of giant beauty in a small individual life, and we all need that." These poems are uniquely born of genuine encounters with strangers, and bring a magnificent array of words, from the mundane to the exotic, dazzlingly to life, a life animated by human connection. The opening meta-poem, built upon the gift from Salman Rushdia of the word "Strangers," crystallizes the appeal of being open to McKetta's sprightly experiment: "We all were strangers once, before a word surprised us." Read these poems, and be prepared for wonderful surprises.

Poetry for strangers is the beautiful result of a fascinating experiment By michael touchton Poetry for strangers is the beautiful result of a fascinating experiment. This collection of Elisabeth Sharp McKetta's poetry draws from what, in other, less-able hands, would be underwhelming, quotidian experiences with strangers that most of us probably ignore. McKetta finds not only beauty in these encounters, but a singular voice that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Composed independently, each entry in the collection represents a layer in a collage that Poetry for Strangers arranges to create a whole much greater than the sum of its parts. I highly recommend this collection that will spur the reader to re-examine and reconsider the spaces in between one's formal activities. Take Poetry for Strangers as a guide- what you find might surprise you.
