A woman loses everything on Christmas Eve. Slowly she begins to rebuild her life, but in the darkest hour of her darkest day she makes a difficult choice to give it all away again, but Life has other plans! This book may not satisfy readers who want a big, bright romance. It is realistic in many ways, but is not what many would call a "true" romance, as the genre is today. This is a story more about life than "happily ever after", though that is the way this story ends--for some, at least.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gripping story but disappointing as a romance. Some loose ends By irene It was a very painful book to read at times. I don't mean painful like poorly written but painful because of all the pain Eva, the narrator, has to go through, and I hurt right along with her. It seems like she just keeps facing one difficult situation after another, and I kept holding my breath, hoping that things would turn around for her. Yet it's not a depressing book, which I think is a testament to the author's skill. There are flashes of hope and joy even through the pain.I can't imagine how it must be to wake up in hospital in pain and confused, asking for your fiancé, and then be told that he didn't survive the car crash... and neither did your best friend. I can't imagine how it must be to finally be discharged from hospital after months of recovery, only to discover that you no longer have a job. Eva feels like she has lost everything that gave her life meaning. She decides to move back to Texas, to the house her grandmother left her. But that comes with its own set of challenges...It was good to see her heal but I was sad about the man she eventually chose; I wanted her to end up with someone else. I was disappointed with the romance aspect and the way the author wove that into the story. I suppose in real life it does happen this way, we can't explain why we like one person more than another. But when I read romance, I don't want it to be like real life, I want the fantasy of everybody getting a happy-ever-after. I didn't deduct stars for this because the author gave me enough clues to see the writing on the wall... it's not like the outcome was a total shocker. But I was still rooting for the guy who didn't get chosen.Anyway. Romantic disappointments aside, at the end of the story some loose ends remained, like: What happened to the strongbox with the will, and the other items which had been kept in the storage facility? Had Eva's grandmother's attorney been at fault? What had those intruders been after, the two times they came to the house? Had they been the same people? Who were they, or who sent them? Because of these unanswered questions, I can't give the story five stars. I was actually pretty disappointed with the ending, what with the loose ends and the disappointment in Eva's final choice of man. But I'm giving the story four stars because it was well-written and I just couldn't stop reading. I HAD to know what would happen next. The author drew me in, the emotions were strong and real, and the characters were believable.Written in first-person (from Eva's POV) and it's clean, no sexual scenes (the characters don't even come close to having sex).Further explanation as to why I did not like the romance aspect of the plot...***SPOILERS BELOW***This story was categorized as 'romance' but the man whom Eva kept building a relationship with throughout the story was not the man she chose in the end. Instead, she chose a man whom we hardly ever see her interacting with, a man who had been hostile to her and who only started changing his attitude towards the end of the story. First, I didn't get to enjoy watching a relationship develop between the two main characters. In a romance, if the two main characters have interactions throughout 80% of the book, you know it's building up to something, and you just expect them to end up together. I know Eva keeps holding back from him, but it's understandable because she's still healing. I was really hoping that she would come around eventually. And she did say that she could love him, so why not?! The second problem: The 'good guy' got the short end of the stick. The one who has been her friend, has been there for her in every way and who has never let her down got rejected in favor of the guy who never did one thing for her except resent her for things that aren't her fault and speak to her rudely. I mean, give me a good reason why she has to ditch the good guy, make him have some ulterior motives for being so helpful, and at least I would be able to accept it. That brings me to the third problem: She had no good reason to ditch him, so I feel like she made a stupid decision to go with the one who hasn't been nice to her over the one who has been so kind and understanding and amazing to her throughout all her confusion, pain, and struggles. It makes me unable to believe in her happily-ever-after because what does she know about this other guy?! Nothing! Will he come through for her in a crisis? We don't know! He seems so judgmental and gruff and hard compared to the first guy. The fourth problem: The author broke that fantastic guy's heart! He's such a good guy, but there's no happy ending for him. Arrrggghhhhh! I was really dissatisfied with the ending for his sake :(
