For the good of her son, Max, the two leave Bedford, New York and head for Chicago to temporarily stay with her judgmental mother-in-law. Car troubles, an unexpected storm, and a pregnant cat in need force them to stop in Lily Dale, New York. Young Max loves the friends he has made in the unusual town, but the penchant the residents have for regularly communicating with the spirit world, as well as a very human murderer, leave Bella unsure about calling Lily Dale their new home.Wendy Corsi Staub has a successful Young Adult series set in Lily Dale, New York, but this is the first book in a new cozy mystery series for adults. I enjoyed the setting and the characters very much. Readers familiar with the author’s thrillers will find this mystery just as suspenseful, but less intense and without any graphic violence. A little research show that many of the events, such as the Message Service, and places such as the Sweat Lodge and Inspiration Stump described in the book, actually exist in the real town of Lily Dale.In addition to the appealing setting, the book is enjoyable because Bella is a relatable main character. She is a young widow with a smart, sweet five-year-old son, looking for a fresh start after her beloved husband’s death. She isn’t over her husband’s death, but is trying to move on for her son’s sake. It’s logical and in fact smart of Bella to be careful who she trusts in Lily Dale, since there has been a suspicious death and other strange events which could be related. However, it gets really old hearing Bella repeatedly say she has to leave Lily Dale as soon as possible, since she at least has a temporary job, a beautiful home in which she and her son can stay for free, and several new friends. The only thing waiting for her in Chicago is the prospect of sharing a small apartment with her disapproving mother-in-law who isn’t eager to open her home to Bella or her young son. It also isn’t unusual that Bella would be skeptical of some of the self-proclaimed psychics in the town, but she goes a little overboard in her fear. However, the plot kept my interest from the beginning to end and the town is full of quirky, likeable characters. It wouldn’t be a true cozy without a cat, but Chance the Cat, based on a real pet of the author’s, isn’t just something to add to the “cozy” feeling of the mystery. Chance plays an important role in leading Bella to Lily Dale and to helping her solve part of the mysterious happenings at the Valley View Manor. Everything is wrapped up at by the end of the book, but the stage is definitely set for a sequel, which I would love to read. I recommend this book for those who don’t mind a bit of the supernatural in their mysteries. However, there is nothing so over-the-top that it makes the book far-fetched, so it’s a great balance of the natural and supernatural.

It's a follow on to Wendy Corsi Staub's YA series set in the same town, and the teen heroine of that series shows up occasionally in this book. You don't have to know anything about those books to enjoy this one.Isabella Jordan's husband has died, and she's been laid off from her teaching job. As the book opens, she's packing up her house, and having nowhere else to turn she's preparing to take her young son Max and go live with the mother-in-law she privately calls Maleficent. Along the way, thanks to a mysterious billboard and a pregnant cat, they end up stranded in Lily Dale, where one of the local innkeepers has recently met with a fatal accident.Bella's grief is believably portrayed, and the kid characters are written realistically for their ages. As it's the first in the adult series, there's a lot of introductions going on, including at least two possible future romantic interests. The mystery is well plotted and not so easily spotted. The town of Lily Dale is a character in itself, with a (to me) somewhat bizarre mix of whimsy and seriousness. Actually, the book's the same way, with Bella's sadness and her desperation over her financial situation juxtaposed with the slightly wacky spiritualists and odd coincidences. There's plenty of fodder here for an interesting cozy series.

The plot moved much too slowly, and does not engage the reader until 70 to 100 pages before it ends. It was so repetitive in the beginning, you lose any empathy or sympathy for the protagonist that I had to force myself to finish reading the book even though the plot picked up towards the end. Unfortunately, by the time I got to this point, I simply was not interested anymore.
