From Edgar Award-winning author Thomas H. Cook, A Dancer in the Dust is a deeply moving literary thriller about ill-fated love: one man’s love for an extraordinary woman, and one woman’s love for her troubled country.Twenty years ago, Ray Campbell was an aid worker dedicated to improving conditions in Lubanda, a newly independent African country. He is shocked when a friend from that time is now found murdered in a New York alley, especially because signs suggest that his murder is connected to the tragic death decades ago of Martine Aubert—the only woman Ray ever truly loved. Martine Aubert was a white, native Lubandan farmer whose dream for her homeland starkly conflicted with those charged with its so-called development. And Ray’s failure to understand Martine’s commitment to her country had led him to seal her fate in a moment of grievous error. As Ray returns to Lubanda to investigate the cause of his friend’s murder, he also returns to the passion he’d once felt for Martine and vows, in her memory, to rectify his wrongs.

Review “Edgar Award winner Thomas Cook has a string of beautifully written and elegantly plotted thrillers to his name. A Dancer in the Dust is one of his best ever. This lush story combines current events and a wonderfully realized love story.”—Globe & Mail“Cook excels at merging contemporary and past storylines into one narrative . . . [and] masterfully captures the tumultuous state of a country in upheaval.”—Kirkus Reviews“Not since John Le Carré’s The Mission Song have I seen such a loving and sorrowful portrait of modern Africa. . . . A dark read, but a worthwhile one.”—News & Observer (Raleigh)“[A] very readable genre-twisting thriller/love story/crime novel that will captivate readers from the start to the finish.”—Huntington News“Highly recommended.”—I Love a Mystery

A Wonderful Story By Lawton Sack This book is probably not going to appeal to some people, especially those that enjoy a lot of action, twists and turns, etc. This is simply a story very well told. I felt like I was sitting next to the main character as he told me the story of his one true love in a foreign land. I strongly encourage people to give it a chance and just enjoy it for what it is.

Ray Campbell is the youthful aid worker in Africa. There he meets Martine, a local farmer and they fall in love. A friend from his time in Africa is found dead in New York. Ray reflects and in essence, returns to his idealistic past. For me, this book creeps across social issues such as poverty in Africa as well as the endemic matters of public governance in the region. More specifically, the role of the many non-governmental organisations and the power structures associated with such enterprises is contrasted with the toils of Martine who wishes for the countries’ independence. Not all stories in Africa are good news stories and this story fuses themes of loss, love and death. The book is basically well written, though I would not describe it as compelling as a page turner.I particularly liked a few quotes.“There are three principal factors in risk assessment…..the amount of the loss, the likelihood of incurring it, and in the event of loss, the subsequent possibility of either full or partial recovery.”“That we are made, in the end, by the things we can’t forget.”

Cook, as I have written many times before, is the most underrated and perhaps under-read master of truly stellar story telling.A "do gooder" arrives in Africa full of ways to improve the natives' lives. With the best intentions, he declares that "He is here to help Lubanda," the fictional African country. After he has done his worst, he returns to American and becomes an expert in risk assessment.A murder brings him back, both to his memories and to Lubanda. His adult self is full of regrets and, as he sets about righting earlier wrongs, the narrative brings into sharp relief how our perceptions cloud reality and often cause more harm than good. Another winner from Thomas H. Cook.
