By bioglover Almost every schoolchild who loved the Tudors (and that is many of us) grows up to be an adult who loves the Tudors - I certainly fit that bill and so I read this book by Dr Benjamin Dabby with much anticipation. It did not disappoint me. In reading the book it became clear that the use of the word "extraordinary" in the title is fully justified in describing Cholmeley, a person I had not previously heard of; not too many people can have served all the last 4 Tudor monarchs (Henry VIII, Mary I, Edward VI & Elizabeth I) in high office nor, as a result have been a Catholic, Protestant, a Catholic again & then, finally a Protestant again. He was imprisoned by the Crown and also a torturer authorised by the Crown (pretty much!). He was kicked out of law school & went on to become one of the foremost legal practitioners in the country. All in all a really good story based on new research and very well illustrated. The book gives an excellent feel for the real workings of the Tudor courts and evokes the atmosphere of the times really well. I am sure it will be enjoyed by all Tudor lovers.
