From being a tiny, non-descript village of the Malwa region in the ancient times, a strife-torn principality under the tutelage of a Pathan dynasty in the middle ages, to a metropolis with all the paraphernalia of modern living in post-Independence India-Bhopal has seen it all. This book, Bhopal is a dedication to its namesake-the ancient city of Bhopal with its colourful history and equally interesting socio-cultural milieu, representing, at once, a fine blend of antiquity and modernity. Divided into two broad sections, this book opens with a comprehensive delineation of Bhopals transformation from an inconspicuous village to its modern avatar of a state capital through time. It then moves on to provide the readers a glimpse of the city through the eyes of a traveller who stops to notice all that he experiences around him about a new city-heritage sites, architectural marvels, religious centres, bazars, townships, industry, institutions and, of course, Nature. Discover the heart of Madhya Pradesh, discover Bhopal.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Nice Read to Understand History and Culture of Bhopal city By Dr Anup K Das Bhopal has a comparatively shorter history. Modern Bhopal was established only in an early 18th century of the Common Era by an Afghan soldier in the Mughal army named Dost Mohammad Khan (1672-1728). The City became a British princely state in 1818 and then distinguished as the second-largest Muslim-ruled princely state, the first being Hyderabad. This princely state was mainly ruled by four Begums between 1819 and 1926, consecutively by Nawab Qudsia Begum, Nawab Sikandar Jahan Begum, Nawab Shah Jahan Begum and Nawab Sultan Jahan Begum. In the 18th century, Bhopal became a flourishing urban centre, having setoff modern waterworks, railways, a postal system and a municipality. The author briefly describes making of the modern Bhopal city by four enthusiastic Begums and their descendants. During the British Raj, Bhopal state flourished providing modern civic amenities to its citizens and could retain princely statehood till 1st June 1949. Then it was merged with union of India and later became the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. In the chapter "Journey through Annals of History", the author describes genealogy of ancestors of Nawab Sultan Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (cricketer) and Saif Ali Khan (film actor), particularly four Begum Rulers and their descendants. Located on the banks of two large lakes, namely, Bhojtaal (also known as upper lake) and Lower Lake, Bhopal becomes a centre of tourist attraction in Madhya Pradesh. Bhimbetka Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Paleolithic archaeological site exhibiting the earliest traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent, is located close by. Bhopal is also infamous for the Bhopal Gas Tragedy 1984, which costs more than 4000 innocent lives. This book is a nice read to understand history and culture of Bhopal city. This book also provides several colour photographs to represent past and present of the city.
