Robyn Landy thought her happily-ever-after would start after she retired from the U.S. Coast Guard. Instead, she discovers that her job demands were not the only reason her eight-year relationship was tanking. Struggling to find equilibrium in her life, she leases a horse at a local barn. There she befriends Kristine Owens and her son Caemon. The new setting relieves the sadness she feels at home.A relative newcomer to rural Arcata, Grace Warren heads grant coordination for the local college’s art department. As new friends encourage her to explore the local arts scene and wilderness, Grace finds herself repeatedly crossing paths with the intensely attractive Robyn. When she discovers Robyn’s woodworking artistry, they seem perfect for each other and Grace easily envisions a future together. But the decidedly reserved Robyn chafes under Grace’s advice and scrutiny. Why are women always trying to change her? There’s no reason to upend her life yet again—except for a kiss neither of them can forget.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable novel with well developed characters. By RLynne Such Happiness As This is set in Arcata, a college town in Northern CA. Robyn Landy lives in the home she inherited from her grandparents and rents rooms to students at nearby Humboldt State. She also crafts bowls from redwood burls which she sells. Robyn has been in an eight year relationship with Barb, but she realizes that it's going rapidly downhill. Feeling quite down, Robyn leases a horse at a local barn to see if riding and caring for the horse will help her spirits. At the barn she becomes friends with Kristine Owens, her son, and her pregnant wife. Through them, she meets Grace Warren. Both Grace and Kristine teach at Humboldt State. While Grace and Robyn are attracted to each other, working out areas of conflict between them takes center stage in this engrossing novel. While writing about their struggles, the author has also done a wonderful job of sharing the beauty of the north coast and the warmth of Arcata with her readers.

This focuses on Robyn (43 year old, retired coast guard) and Grace (40 year old, admin at the local college). Robyn just ended an 8 year "commitment" and is trying to find who she really is and Grace, well, Grace is trying to find her forever in a sense. Both have issues they need to work through and their journey is a cute one. What I liked a lot is that we get glimpses of Kristine and Gloria's life and even an idea of how Hope and Dani are doing (you'll know these characters from the author's first two books). I rather enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it, especially if you are fan of the author.

The main character's rise from loss and depression are well drawn, and I found myself connecting in a way I find it harder when the protagonist is much younger (It should be said that I am older than the main character myself)The ancillary characters add much to the healing and growth of the protagonist and the boy (Caemon) is a delight. The book pulls you along, and the ending is all I hoped for.The author is certainly one to follow as she broadens out into new territory with this book. Waiting for the next one!
