To Jamie Dubois, love is anything but a bed of roses. As a shrewd executive, Jamie is no stranger to hard work, and her soaring corporate career is her well-deserved reward. But while her professional life has flourished, her personal life has stalled as her wishful fantasies of being swept off her feet collided with the realities of bumpy landings. And after a series of such disappointments, she has given up--at least for now--on the whole idea of marriage and white picket fences. By the time she meets an ambitious heartthrob named Ken, Jamie is well-practiced at keeping her heart to herself. While she enjoys seeing him now and then, she has no intention of getting carried away. It's a long-distance affair, and she's sure that the distance will douse any careless flames that flicker during their occasional visits. But Jamie's perfect dating arrangement abruptly ends when Ken unexpectedly moves to her hometown--and accepts a plum job with her employer. Suddenly, she has no way to avoid him or her long-buried desire for something real that she can hold onto. And the more she fights it, the more she wants it. Before long, her once predictable life is turned upside-down--and everything she wants becomes everything she can't have.

From the Back Cover Everlasting love seems about as likely as diamond raindrops in Krys Batts's witty romantic charmer, Not Flowers, but Love. Jamie Dubois's love life has been a series of calamities for as long as she can remember. And through these calamities, she has noticed a dismaying pattern--men who come bearing flowers are usually delivering heartaches as well. So at age thirty-five, she prefers to focus on her flourishing career in Houston, Texas, while keeping love at a distance. Literally. But when her remote, occasional lover, Ken, decides to take a job in Houston with Jamie's employer, her calculated control begins to unravel. Soon, she is mired in mayhem as the predictable life she knows is turned upside-down--and everything she wants becomes everything she can't have.

A story about love, life lessons, and the allegory of flowers By Jennifer Meet Jamie, a workaholic with a penchant for picking the wrong men and antics that would put Bridget Jones to shame. She's satisfied, or so she claims, meeting up with Ken for a romatic rendezvous and going their own separate ways. But then he gets a job at the company she works for and she fears that it's too close for comfort. Although the protagonist has a supportive family, a long-suffering sister, a feckless brother in law...her home away from home is the office, where the usual drama plays out: the tension between Jamie and Ken, backstabbing, gossip, plus the mounting anxiety over company product projections. And then, there is the pervading symbolism of flowers. Jamie is jaded, and battle-weary from her past romantic experiences, as every bouquet-bearer in her life has turned out to be a cad. I feel that the reader will find her and the other characters believeable, and very much relatable. I thought they were just like everyday people I come across; very authentic in their human frailties.Personally, I think a lot of single women can learn a lesson or two from Jamie. Don't push love away when it's right there in your path. And take some time to stop and smell the roses - cliche, I know, but a flower is really more than just a flower when you get down to it.

By Sherm Jones Ms. Batts has done a fantastic job of making the reader feel like they are immersed within the story. I literally read the book in one day because I had to know what happened to Ms. Dubois. This hard working ambitious young woman has everything that you can wish for in the American Dream except a love to call her own. What good is success without someone to share it with? Ken is the gentleman who may be able to change all that for her if she is willing to let her guard down and succumb to true love. This book is a true tale of what can happen when you 'think' that you have it all figured out. Can't wait for Ms. Batts' next novel!!!

I liked this group of intelligent characters. My favs-the 2 main people, the sister, and even the college friend. The story was told in a smart engaging way that made the characters feel real. I also liked the mystery twist that kept me guessing. The romance between the lead caracters kept me reading on. I liked the mental and physical action throughout. Enjoyed the book-would recommend to romantics out there who like a good story that's about more than a roll in the hay!
