Zarbul Masalha: 151 Afghan Dari Proverbs (Third Edition), by Edward Zellem

Review "Edward Zellem's Afghan Proverbs books are a personal project, and some people say that they help win hearts and minds. I have always thought that 'winning hearts and minds' is an inaccurate way to say it, because winning implies that somebody also loses. Nobody loses here. I think Ed's Afghan Proverbs books connect hearts and minds, which is a truly critical task."      - General David H. Petraeus (U.S. Army, Ret.)        Former commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan"These proverbs are a reminder of old traditions and folklore that have been passed from generation to generation. And they are a true delight for anyone who has been away or alienated from Afghanistan."       - Leena Alam        Award-winning Afghan actress and UNAMA Peace Ambassador"An informative and beautifully produced volume of Afghan proverbs that Edward Zellem collected in Afghanistan during his time of service there as a captain in the United States Navy.  His collection represents a treasure of the proverbial wisdom of that country, and serves as an example of the commonality of life that ties humanity together all over the world."           - Dr. Wolfgang Mieder        Professor of German and Folklore, University of Vermont           Internationally recognized proverbs scholar and author   "This is incredible stuff. It is a huge service to the languages and proverbs in this part of the world. The narrative of peace, universal love and mutual understanding central to the idea is so beautiful."       - Ali Jan        Medical doctor, historian and grandson of famed Afghan author and grammarian         Qazi Ahmad Jan, aka "The Munshi of Peshawar""Captain Edward Zellem has written one of the most remarkable books in recent memory about Afghanistan."        - Veterans Radio Network

About the Author Edward Zellem is the 9-time award-winning author of 3 bilingual books of Afghan Proverbs published in 15 languages. He is a U.S. Navy officer and trained Dari speaker who spent a year and a half embedded on native Afghan teams in Afghanistan, including a year inside the Afghan Presidential Palace on President Hamid Karzai's staff. While in Afghanistan, Captain Zellem became fascinated with the way Afghans use Proverbs in their daily conversations. He began collecting and translating them, and used them every day with Afghans in his professional and personal life. After students at a local Kabul high school offered to create illustrations, he decided to publish his collection as a personal project to share with the world.

A third or more of the proverbs are not in common usage, but either literary in origin or just not commonly used. It is assumed that the reader will already be somewhat fluent in Dari and if so, it is far more useful than if one is not. Layout and placement on each page is good and easy to use with both English and Persian script in use. There is a very handy Appendix (in English) that gives the origin for each proverb and fills out an interpretation of meaning. For my personal way of using books, it would be more useful to have the text in my hand than on my screen. If I were to purchase it again, I would order it in the book form. For my own use, I would rank the text as 4+ stars, but for a general readership, I think 3 stars is a better number.

I do not speak Dari but that is okay. We laugh together at my attempt to speak Dari and I try to pick a proverb useful to the situation we are facing. I highly recommend this if you work with Afghans; poetry and proverbs are integral to their culture.
