By RLynne Robin Sanders was born into and raised by a wealthy, conservative family in a suburb outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Her father was a conservative Republican legislator. Robin chose to go to college in Florida, rather than to her father's Georgia alma mater..When she checked into her dorm, she is amazed at how spartan the dorm room is, and horrified by the public bathrooms on each floor! Then she met her roommate, Adrienne Austen who is, gasp!, into heavy metal music! The two young women work out their differences, both political and musical, and become best friends, and sometime lovers. Years passed, and Georgia Governor Robin Sanders is the conservative darling in the upcoming Republican presidential primary. Now married, and with a teenage daughter, Robin knows her lines and the role she must play to win the nomination. When, after all of these years, she sees Adrienne, she starts wondering if she can continue with her conservative message. Most of the book is written in the first person and is from Robin's POV. Both of the main characters are fully developed, as are some of thesecondary characters. This is a very well written book with a good story line, and two very likable main characters.

But a stray photo with lesbian musician Adrienne Austen starts a whirlwind of shocking rumors. Tales of hypocrisy spread, pointedly egregious to Robin’s hard stance for traditional marriage. Robin’s campaign staff and politico father are bewildered by the protagonist’s increasingly erratic behavior.Author Renée Lukas pulls this novel together beautify. Lukas uses first person narration for Robin’s past, which serves to draw us inside young Robin’s conflicted longings. For the present, however, Lukas chooses a third person voice. The effect keeps her readers on edge, wondering about Robin’s true motivations. On a deeper level, Lukas’ technique mirrors today’s political environment, where candidates willingly become vapid caricatures of party positions. Lukas dismisses this pretention by offering her readers genuine emotion. Rejecting the blackest blacks and the whitest whites, Lukas paints her story with the same fluid greys that define our reality. With the White House—and Robin’s soul—in the balance, the sound and fury churns unto the very last pages. The depth and humor of Lukas’ writing pulls the reader towards the inevitable collision. A brilliantly crafted tale in the context of our current real life campaign, this is not a book to you want to miss!

I felt though that changing the time line so often, slowed the flow of the book a little. The first half of the book was excellent, but I found the second half rushed at the end. It could have done with a wrap up election chapter. I personally would have liked more action in the present day political scene, rather than so much angst in their college relationship. I can recommend this novel as a good read.
