She brings her characters to life and makes you feel like you are right in the story watching close up, and that makes for a great writer. I love how the h starts out so independent and then fall so deeply in love that they think they have lost themselves. I was initially crushed when she had spoken to Carly and her advice seemed like she had regretted her decision, but then she was beig typical Carly. A great new series and can't wait for it to continue.

Champion competition dogs that is.This book starts out with an exciting first scene and the excitement, as well as the fun and mystery, continue right up to the last page. The plot was a good one. Very tight and well written with interesting main, and supporting characters, and wonderful situations. The story find Liss out of her store, Scottish Emporium, and into the world of a variety competition show. It was fun to get a behind the scenes look into such a hectic world.Ms. Dunnett finally brings a Scotty dog into her series. But the question is, will the Scottie be a regular character? You have to read the book to find out! ;-)Fans of this long running series with be pleased with this installment. And new readers need not worry, you can read this story without having read the others.

Ms. Dunnett writes a good mystery, she also makes want to move Maine. I particularly like the characters-they are very real and most of them are good people who go to work and worry about things just like us regular folks. Less and her Aunt are charming as is her husband. This not a cloying cozy. It feels like a slice of life. I'm always sorry when the book is finished. So I need to wait for the next one.

When Liss MacCrimmon is driving home during an ice storm she sees a small dog run out in front of her car causing her to spin out on the icy roads. Liss finds the Scottish terrier limping and immediately takes her to the vet and then searches for an owner.Liss finds out the dog belongs to Deidre Amendole and is part of an act on a reality television competition known as Deidre and her Dancing Doggies. Unfortunately after returning Dandy to Deidre Liss gets a call from Deidre’s daughter that her mother has passed and since Liss mentioned being a former dancer and the dogs seemed to listen to her, Deidre’s daughter wants Liss to fill in for Deidre in the competition. Liss soon finds that there have been several attempts to sabotage the various acts and Deidre’s death may not have been accidental.The Scottie Barked At Midnight is the ninth book in the Liss MacCrimmon series but it’s the first of which I have read and seemed to read fine as a standalone novel. A great little cozy mystery with some lovely characters and a couple of too cute canine companions.Liss seemed like an every day character that just happened to get caught up in an ongoing investigation. She didn’t go out and investigate or act as if she was an amateur detective, she just questions everything and tries to keep herself safe and decide who she can trust while being involved in the show which I enjoyed.The setting being a live reality television competition adds a pretty crazy group of secondary competitors/suspects. Also, a bit humorous going behind the scenes of this “live” show.Overall, would definitely recommend if you enjoy a cozy mystery.I won this book from Goodreads First Reads, receiving a free copy in no way reflects upon my review and all thoughts are my own.

Gray In my search for assistance regarding presentation creations, I was referred to this guide by a colleague that said it did wonders for him. After digesting the material I can wholly attest that this is more than what I was looking for. The way the author confronts the myths about creating presentations increased my assuredness in myself. Also the writing is very vivid and I really enjoyed the succinct and dense style. The relation to other stories as a metaphor for my own brought things into better perspective while the use of the PRISM technique gave me real insight into what steps I need to be taking. The way this material is broken down shows the obvious authority that the author has on the subject while the illustrations make the absorption of the information that much easier. From recipes for success to providing detailed information on everything from graphics and fonts to shape transformations, there is nothing left out of this material. Also, the material is laid out in such a manner that it’s easy to follow and even I have found a means of creating a stellar presentation; something I never thought was prior possible.In summation, if you’re looking for an outstanding reference that will show you just how capable you can be at creating presentations, then you can’t do better than this one. I thought, as a non-creative person that it would be impossible for me, but now I’m creating wonderful displays. I’ve no doubt that if I can do it you, you can too.

American businesses hire companies half a world away to handle any number of functions, tech support, manufacturing -- even marketing. Some people have a sort of psychic resistance to anything originating from "out there". At its worst, this is xenophobia. Perhaps when you see that this book is written by someone named Subbarao Mukkavilli, and discover that each chapter heading holds a quotation from a guru or a swami, you might feel tempted to mentally visualize the book in terms of the fake East Indian accents used tellingly by American comics. Please, allow me to insist that you park any feelings like that which you may have on first receiving this book. I assure you that it is written is flawless "business English". It is organized in a logical way that is quite reminiscent of Steven Covey's "7 Habits" books. If you ever have to do a presentation at a high level, or even at the simplest level, this book should be at your side guiding you through all the best steps that will lead to success for you. It is unafraid to acknowledge that many readers have very little confidence in their ability to do presentations, but shows how, step by step, those fears may be overcome. It should also be mentioned that the author's not just "talking the talk", he's been "walking the walk" for over 20 years. This is now a key item in my library, and a first responder to any presentation problems I might have in the future.

The producers of the TV series "True Detective" could make a great season out of this novel because of the good By jean dederman Sandlin's attention to detail makes this page-turner a book that tells the reader to slow down to savor each descriptive detail about a Texas town, its characters, its crimes, its conflicts, and some underhanded dealings in the early 1970s. The characters are developed through attention to clothing, hair styles,habits, and specific nuances in language. Meanwhile, in the larger world and on TV, the Watergate hearings are keeping some people glued to the television. Sandlin's depictions of a time and place are spot-on in cultural and historical references. The producers of the TV series "True Detective" could make a great season out of this novel because of the good, the bad, and the ugly characters.

Book makes you care about something you didn't know you cared about By Karla Decker I've read Sandlin's short stories and articles but am so excited with this novel. It was a challenging subject but she never let up. It just kept drawing me in. I cared. I really cared. I love books that when you are finished you don't really want to talk to anybody for a while. It will stay with me for a long while.

McLaurin When a book has a sentence like, "Wallace must have scared all the blood south to this guy's Earth shoes because he had the chalkiest face Phelan had seen outside of a Johnny Winter album.", it is nothing but pleasure to read. Sandlin has captured Southeast Texas in her characters and, most especially, in the way they speak.

In addition to his writing, which totaled more than twenty volumes, Thoreau was an active abolitionist, and lectured regularly against the Fugitive Slave Law. Thoreau died in 1862, and is buried along with Louisa May Alcott, Ellery Channing, and other notable Americans in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.Patrick Cullen (a.k.a. John Lescault), a native of Massachusetts, is a graduate of the Catholic University of America. He lives in Washington, DC, where he works in theater.

John Silver this is an excellent edition of a discursive memoir of a trip that henry thoreau took with his brother john in 1839. it is, in a sense, a long elegy to the memory of his brother who died a few years later, in 1842. the book was filled with digressions, and the chronology was reorganized into the form of a week's journey, before it was finally published in 1849. the "historical introduction" by linck johnson gives a detailed account of this process.this edition was published in 1980(hardback) and 1983(paperback). it is now out of print, but it is worth searching for, not only for the legible format and historical introduction, but also for the beautiful photographic illustrations, numbering about 50. these were taken by herbert gleason in the early 1900's. they are not only well selected for scenery and lighting, but each of them is matched to particular lines of the text. they provide a representative visual summary of the landscapes through which the thoreaus passed seventy years previously, and now, a hundred years later, they provide a historical record of some of the changes in this southern new england landscape.i highly recommend this edition for the text, the historical introduction and the photographic illustrations.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I Love Thoreau. By David Wilkinson I would have given this a five, but he goes off on a tangent some times and I usually skipped over those parts. When he stayed with writing about the trip I loved it. He hits the nail on the head so many times in explaining people and life and nature. I got a few good laughs here and there, and felt like I was with him on his trip. It hurt me deep inside sometimes to think about what this country was like then, and what it has become. And it was amazing to hear him talk about the same thing from his time to the past, when the land had savages and was so pristine. Maybe I ought to up it to four and a half stars.

This is an excellent crash course guide book on Photoshop with good detail on all the important tools that need to be learned and used. I found chapter 4 very informative and helpful with brief detail on filters. These days I can easily use many Photoshop tools and filters after taking help from this book. A must read guide book for all beginners to learn about different tools, filters, layers and many more. Highly recommended.

A great hands-on approach By jamie Really enjoyed this book, from setting up a project right down to integrating google play services this has been a real enjoyment! mastering android game development gave me and hopefully will give you that bit extra and then some! the collision detection in making games was a weak spot for me but is now more clearer thanks to the way it is placed in this book.Some past books i have read i skipped through a bit and this was not the case this time around, if you dedicate your time to this without skipping through sections then there is no reason you cant take away some valuable knowledge to aid you in your games development! remember the will to learn puts you on the path to succeed! i find the hands on approach the best possible way to learn and this is what this book does, practice makes perfect as the saying goes and i now have plenty more knowledge to help me.The book is wriiten well and easy to follow, again its the will to learn that will determine how you take the methods in this book and what you take away after the final chapter. Functional game development By Hugo This is the book if you want to learn how to make an android game, the concepts shown by the author are everything I would like to be presented when I was beginning in game development, but this book doesn't stopped in concepts of game development, he shows the pros and cons if you want to make a game purely with Android SDK. I've always trying to make games using complete game engines and editors, avoiding lose my time, but Isn't that crazy thing create a simple game engine to make a simple mobile game, now I think this is even fast process because I already knew how to program in Java and how Android works, the first chapter opened my mind, but the book has ten chapters and as I was reading and applying the concepts in my game I saw that it was a good choice, the book goes deep, and you become able to make a full featured game, the concepts shown are simple, but complete in way that you can easily adapt and apply for that game you want to do, all the features that most of the engines shows as their advantages like sounds, particles, collision, etc., are proved that isn't too difficult to implement and sometimes is even easier. This book was made by a top class game developer, and he mastered the art of teach what he knows. At the end of this book I felt that I became a better game developer because now I know how the game really works under the hood, this is much powerful, this book teached me more than a regular course, but it was fun and fast.

I will update when I get a chance to go back to it if necessary.I found coverage of the structure of the code is a big positive.This is so often overlooked and it is very different to a regular Java or even Android app.Wish it didn't cover XML animations and "is this the right tool" and had more of the absolutely excellent info like on screen game controllers and particle effects made really easy.Five stars for that.

By M C It's difficult finding truly objective, realistic advice on all things “cloud” but the author has done an excellent job of doing just that. After the first few chapters it became obvious the author had extensive experience within corporate IT and not just startups. That is a critical piece for those in corporate IT environments where advice on the cloud usually comes from pundits, vendors wanting to sell their solutions and others, far-removed from the reality of the challenges that enterprise IT shops face. There is no technology or vendor bias in the book and although the author has a lot of experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) he does not try and sell it for all your solutions.The book takes you through a roadmap and foundational concepts about how to approach your applications and their launch and implementation in the cloud; whether you are in enterprise IT or a “hip greenfield startup”. Some of the concepts are available in other places but you will be hard pressed to find a more concise and ordered guide. The author also provides lots of references to other information throughout the chapters.There are a lot of concepts covered including API's, Cloud Types, DevOps, Security and Compliance; as well as their impacts on your organization. A great reference to have for when delving into or starting enterprise IT cloud projects. I highly recommend reading it.

The Constitution of the United States of America Modern Edition: Rearranged and Edited for Ease of Reading, by Henry BainAbout the Author The Modern Edition of the Constitution has been produced by Henry Bain. A political scientist, he graduated from Swarthmore College and received his Ph.D in Social Science from Harvard University.
He has had a long career in governmental research and consulting, and has taught at several universities. In his most recent academic position he was director of the postgraduate program in Policy Sciences at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Dr. Bain's early research on voting behavior included the first study to produce statistically significant evidence that voters tend to favor the first candidate on the list (Bain and Hecock, Ballot Position and Voter's Choice, 1957). His expert testimony in a California courtroom led that state's supreme court to rule the incumbents-first ballot law unconstitutional.
He participated in the planning of the rapid transit systems of San Francisco (BART) and Washington, D. C. (Metrorail). He was also a member of the team of social scientists who advised on the planning of the new city of Columbia , Maryland.
His experience in local government includes time as a policy analyst for the county council of Montgomery County, Maryland, and as an assistant to the county executive.
Early in his career, Bain was an officer in the Navy Supply Corps, serving at sea and in the office of the Secretary of the Navy, where he was responsible for the secretary's annual report to Congress.
Dr. Bain is now at work on a scholarly and critical study of the manner in which the original Constitution was written and printed, and of the many forms in which the constitutional text has been printed since 1787. His research has revealed a typographical error in the Seventeenth Amendment, committed in 1912 and apparently never before noticed by constitutional scholars. (Reported in his article in the Fall 2012 issue of Prologue, the quarterly journal of the National Archives.)

Readable Version By Barbara A Klein I found, as a student many years ago, that reading The Constitution of the United States was a daunting proposition, therefore, I didn’t. Now, over 200 years later, a modern edition of The Constitution edited by Dr. Henry Bain, a constitutional expert, government researcher and author has been written. I was given a free copy of “The Constitution of the United States of America: Modern Edition by Smith Publicity in return for my honest review.I must admit that I did not read the whole book, but I did read over the format and the extraordinary way that Dr. Bain reorganized the 200 year old document so that it is more readable and makes much more sense. I especially like the way that Dr. Bain inserted the amendments in the edited document where they logically belong in the original version. If I were a teacher of United States government, I would recommend that my students study this version instead of trying to plough through the original document. I might then ask them to compare and contrast the format with the original. Costner I took my time reading this over the summer, referring to the definitions for unusual words, and looking over the explanatory notes. (I'll admit that I thought I wouldn't ever need the definitions, and that they were strictly for young readers. But it was nice to make sure I was correctly remembering what an emolument was.) Dr. Bain has reorganized the text into small chunks that are easy to deal with and grouped all the relevant amendments with the original portion of the document that they refer to. This makes reading it and seeing how it has been changed and adapted over the years much easier. He has also noted which provisions from the original Constitution and the amendments have become obsolete due to time, or have been nullified by later amendments. The detailed list of contents is very helpful when you are looking for a particular details, such as "due process of law."Now that school is back in session, I have placed this book on the "Teacher Resource" shelf in the library so that my colleagues who teach social studies/history may use it as needed. The fourth grade studies the early development of the republic and traces the formation of our government and such documents as the Magna Carta, the Mayflower Compact, and the Articles of Confederation which predated and influenced the Constitution. The fifth grade will be studying Women's Rights and the Civil Rights Movement, which also depends greatly on understanding the Constitution. I'm sure that this new format will make it much easier to use for instruction and learning.I received an advance copy from the publisher for review purposes.

A good effort By Jessica I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.I requested a copy of this book because I was curious to know what the outcome of "improving" the Constitution would be. While not being a Constitutional scholar and not claiming to be extremely knowledgeable about the subject, I'm not seeing any extraction of fact or information despite everything being rearranged for modern readers. The cover material claims the stiff language of the Constitution has been modified for easier readability but I still think the average reader may struggle. The addition of definitions is nice; however, I think space was wasted on words that do not need clarification.I do not like the setup with section headers. As the author identified subject changes within the Constitution, headings were created identifying the new topics. This would have been fine if the new headings did not split sentences in two. At first I was under the impression ends of sentences were cut off due to editorial errors that had not been corrected yet since I have an ARC. It became clear that as the ideas changed through the sentences, the author identified them with new subject headings. This arrangement actually promoted confusion for me instead of relieving it. One such example is the following:"Appellate Jurisdiction of the Supreme CourtIn all the other cases mentioned below, * the Supreme Court shall have appellate jurisdiction both as to law and fact, with such exceptions and under such regulations as the Congress shall make, but1.71 | ART 3 SEC 2 CL 2all the other cases mentioned below all the other cases to which the judicial power of the national government extends appellate ('pel'it) jurisdiction the authority to hear and decide appeals from the decisions of other (lower) courtsFindings of Fact by Juries in Suits at Common Lawin suits at common law, no fact tried by a jury shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the United States than according to the rules of the common law." (Location 630, 20% in Kindle version).I do agree it makes sense to reorder the sections so that amendments are grouped with the original text they correspond to. I like that every section has been labeled with what part of they originated from.All in all this is not a bad representation of the Constitution. I would have preferred a side-by-side view of the original and the edited versions but I do appreciate the original text being included at the end. I'm giving a 3 star rating because the idea had merit but sometimes you just can't improve on the original so I can't justify 5 stars at this time.
